About this audiobook

In this exhilarating thriller inspired by real-life serial killer Ted Bundy, FBI profiler Caitlin Hendrix faces off against a charming, merciless serial killer.

In southern Texas, on Saturday nights, women are disappearing. One vanishes from a movie theater. Another is ripped from her car at a stoplight. Another vanishes from her home while checking on her baby. Rookie FBI agent Caitlin Hendrix, newly assigned to the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit, fears that a serial killer is roaming the dark roads outside Austin.

Caitlin and the FBI's serial crime unit discover the first victim's body in the woods. She's laid out in a bloodstained, white baby-doll nightgown. A second victim in a white nightie lies deeper in the forest's darkness. Both bodies are surrounded by Polaroid photos, stuck in the earth like headstones. Each photo pictures a woman in a white negligee, wrists slashed, suicide-style—posed like Snow White awaiting her prince's kiss.

To track the UNSUB, Caitlin must get inside his mind. How is he selecting these women? Working with a legendary FBI profiler, Caitlin searches for a homology—that elusive point where character and action come together. She profiles a confident, meticulous killer who convinces his victims to lower their guard until he can overpower and take them in plain sight. He then reduces them to objects in a twisted fantasy—dolls for him to possess, control, and ultimately destroy. Caitlin's profile leads the FBI to focus on one man: a charismatic, successful professional who easily gains people's trust. But with only circumstantial evidence linking him to the murders, the police allow him to escape. As Saturday night approaches, Caitlin and the FBI enter a desperate game of cat and mouse, racing to capture the cunning predator before he claims more victims.

This is one series that must be read in order. "Into The Black Nowhere" picks up where "The Unsub" left off and you will be lost if you start with this one. We find out fairly early who the killer is but the fun is watching the killer play cat and mouse games with the FBI. I really prefer books that leaves more mystery for the ending of the book but Meg Gardiner pulled this off very well. The only thing was that after revealing the killer the book went on a little too long. Anyone that likes a good thriller will like both "The Unsub" and "Into the Dark Nowhere".

This is the second book in author Meg Gardiner's Unsub series. This book is as good, if not better, than the first. In this story, FBI profiler Caitlin Hendrix is faced with another serial killer operating in the state of Texas. The man is clever, but Hendrix is even more so and figures out who he is. While they figure out fairly quickly who the perp is, and actually catch him, this is far from the end of this tale! There are so many twists in this conflict between the killer and Hendrix that it makes it impossible to put the book down. However, at the same time, I did not want it to end. We know there will be another book on the horizon from the way this one ended. I am looking forward to the further exploits of Agent Hendrix and those who support her. This is a great series.

I absolutely loved the locale of this book! Of course, duh, it would be Austin. HA!!This book kept me mesmerized for hours and I loved it!!!! So many suspected characters for me that, of course, did not work quite that way. Ahhh, the joy of a good book!!!!I do have to say that Caitlin did tend to get on my nerves a little with her self analysis and issues. However, I still enjoyed the book. A lot!!!Thanks to Penguin Group Dutton and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

Saturday night is a dangerous time in Texas. Who’s killing all these young women? And why? That’s what FBI Agent Caitlin Hendrix must discover in INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE, the second in Meg Gardiner’s UNSUB series. Great characters, intricate plotting, and a villain that is clever, vicious, exceptionally intelligent, and relentless are the hallmarks of this story. And the explosive ending will raise the hair on thebans of you neck. Highly recommended. DP Lyle, award-winning author of the Jake Longly, Samantha Cody, and Dub Walker thriller series

THRILLERMeg GardinerInto the Black Nowhere: An UNSUB NovelDutton BooksHardcover, 978-1-1019-8555-7, (also available as an e-book, an audiobook, a paperback large print, and on audio CD), 368 pgs., $26.00January 30, 2018Shannon Kerber wakes in the night and discovers her infant daughter crying in the arms of a stranger seated on the living-room sofa. When Shannon’s husband returns from a San Antonio Spurs game, she’s gone, the baby cold and crying in the draft from the open front door. Shannon is the fifth abduction in the area in the last six months. Caitlin Hendrix, a newly minted special agent with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (the famous profilers), heads to fictional Solace, Texas, to hunt a hunter.Into the Black Nowhere: An UNSUB Novel is Meg Gardiner’s second installment in her new UNSUB series of thrillers, soon to be a CBS television series. Gardiner, a resident of Austin, is a New York Times bestselling-author and an Edgar Award winner (China Lake, Hodder & Stoughton, 2002). I was excited to learn that her newest novel is set in Texas, and Into the Black Nowhere does not disappoint. With no witnesses and no forensic evidence, it’s as if these women have fallen through a rent in space and time. Lack of information spurs the rumor mill and, this being Texas, the occult is suspected. A local firearms instructor appears on television news to proclaim, “Satan is loose among us.” Apparently, you can shoot Satan dead with a handgun.Gardiner is merciless with her characters, who are diverse and unusually complex for the genre. Hendrix is our heroine, but honorable mention goes to Special Agent Brianne Rainey. These are smart, tough, courageous women. The small-town Texas extras are authentically quirky. While I was unimpressed early on with odd adverbs and clichés such as “he attacked cases like a hawk attacks prey,” Into the Black Nowhere quickly matures into a fast-paced, suspenseful part police procedural, part thriller. Just when you think you know where this is going, it disappears down an alley and reappears where you expect it least.Gardiner draws us in gradually and then hooks us hard. The FBI criminology and technology are familiar from TV and movies, but Into the Black Nowhere goes beyond. The science is innovative and the technology fun, such as using football slant-routes and interception analysis to find a suspect in a crowd.Gardiner has a sardonic wit. A sexy secretary wears a gold cross on a chain that “dipped into her cleavage like a meat thermometer.” Hendrix regards the suspect’s attitude as “Lord of all he surveyed, beloved of children and small animals and all the birds in the air.” She matches wits with this Ted Bundy–like suspect, creating a hybrid of frightening, comedic tension.A startling variety of locations and landscapes adds interest. “As the rain turned to sleet, clouds snuffed the sunset and afternoon sank to charcoal darkness.” Sensory details create atmosphere. As search dogs advance through the preternatural hush of the forest, “the clasps of their leads click against their harnesses.”Into the Black Nowhere is nicely plotted and unusually structured. Gardiner skillfully builds tension as the pace accelerates toward the most dramatic, exhausting, and satisfying ending I’ve read in quite some time. Woman power, y’all.Originally published in Lone Star Literary Life.

A series of disappearances is sweeping through southern Texas. One woman vanished from a movie theater after heading to the concession line. Another was yanked from her car while waiting for a train to pass. They’re always on Saturdays and the victim is always a blonde. This time a woman has gone missing from her home, leaving her crying baby behind. Rookie FBI agent Caitlin Hendrix has been assigned the case and is making her debut in the field with the Behavioral Analysis Unit. The team believes their chasing an abductor, but with the discovery of a body in the woods, their worst fears are realized and suddenly they’re on the hunt for a serial killer. The first victim, the young mother, has been found in a bloodstained white nightie. Her body has the wounds of a suicide victim, but not self-inflicted. As the agents travel deeper in the woods, they find another body and a shrine of Polaroid pictures displaying more women who have fallen prey to this serial killer. Can the FBI team stop this serial killer before another Saturday comes around?Meg Gardiner has done it again! UNSUB was my favorite read for 2017 and the follow up in this series was incredible! The main character, Caitlin Hendrix, is a woman who has been through many traumas in her life and with INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE the reader is given the opportunity to learn more about her life, which reveals an emotional connection to this case. This novel is advertised as being based off of Ted Bundy, who is not a serial killer I know much about, however, if he’s anything like the killer in this book, I’m floored by just how manipulative a person he was. I absolutely love Gardiner’s ability to model her own characters after these real life killers. It’s an aspect that leaves me wanting to know more about the character in her work, as well as do some research on her inspiration. INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE is a heart-pounding, edge of your seat hunt for a serial killer who will stop at nothing to evade the FBI. If you haven’t read UNSUB yet, go buy it and pick up a copy of INTO THE BLACK NOWHERE while you’re at it! Then I kindly ask that you come talk to me about it, so that I can fill my time waiting for the third book in this brilliant series to be released!

I really enjoyed this book! I was a huge fan of the first book in this series, UNSUB, so I was really excited to read this one. I will admit that I didn't like this book quite as much as the first book in the series but it was a very strong book. I was hooked by this book from the very start and enjoyed it to the very end. This series has quickly made its way onto my must read list.Caitlin is now working as an FBI profiler. She goes to Texas with a couple of other members of her team to look into a string of abductions. Women are disappearing and residents are starting to be frightened. There are no clues and nobody knows whether the women are dead or alive. Caitlin and the team start working on putting together a profile for the perpetrator. Most of the book follow Caitlin as she works through the clues to get in the head of the perpetrator. We do get the chance to see things closer to the criminal from time to time as well which worked well in the story. I was a bit surprised by how early in the book the team narrows down the list of suspects and subsequently catches the individual responsible. I had a feeling that there were a few more surprises in store and was excited when things followed that path.I liked the characters in this book. Caitlin is smart and has great instincts. She really is focused on finding the criminal and puts everything into the job. Sean and Michelle do play a role in this book but it is much smaller. I have to admit that I would have liked to have a little more Sean in this book. I did like seeing Caitlin struggle with being away from people in her life and felt it helped round out her character. This was a fast moving story. The opening scene was very strong and really set the tone for the story. I did think that the book slowed down just a bit towards the middle but everything picked up quickly and ended with a ton of action. Things don't always go well for the team and there were more than a few surprises along the way. I really liked the fact that as soon as I thought I had something figured out I would soon find that I knew less than I thought. I would highly recommend this book to fans of mystery thrillers. This is the second book in the UNSUB series but could easily be read as a stand alone since it tells its own story. This is a fast paced story that kept me thinking until the thrilling end. I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series!I received an advance reader edition of this book from Penguin Group Viking - Dutton Books via NetGalley.

I totally enjoyed this, and read it at a break-neck speed, which matched the fast pace of the novel. I hadn’t read the first ‘Unsub’ novel, but the cross between a ‘Criminal Minds’/Behavioral Analysis Unit at the core, with a familiar ‘Unsub’ as the basis for the plot (in this case, someone quite similar to Ted Bundy), made for a compelling read. I liked Gardiner’s writing style, and that she kept a step removed from the real Bundy case. Fun read!

This is the second of what I thought would be a longer series - by the end of this book, I was tired of the main character but it left me wanting more of her boyfriend Sean and his ex Michele. The end of this book opens for a third novel that will involve them much more so I hope the author writes it!

If you're looking for a thriller that will keep you turning pages all night long, this book is for you.The writing is engaging and concise; no wasted words or meandering around. We get right to the action. While the story is about a serial killer, I loved that the focus is more on the psychology behind the killings, as well as the tension among the characters as they race to prevent yet another death. We have some violent scenes, but Gardiner doesn't rely on them to drive this story forward.Into the Black Nowhere is a thriller with depth, complexities, and the kind of realism that had me checking to make sure my doors were locked.*This is book 2 in the UNSUB series. While it can be read as a stand-alone, there are unresolved threads from book 1 woven in. As with many series, I think this one will work best if read in order.*
