About this audiobook

Ikigai is a Japanese phenomenon commonly understood as "your reason to get up in the morning." Ikigai can be small moments: the morning air, a cup of coffee, a compliment. It can also be deep convictions: a fulfilling job, lasting friendships, balanced health. Whether big or small, your ikigai is the path to success and happiness in your own life.

Author Ken Mogi introduces five pillars of ikigai to help you make the most of each day and become your most authentic self:
1. starting small-focus on the details
2. releasing yourself-accept who you are
3. harmony and sustainability-rely on others
4. the joy of little things-appreciate sensory pleasure
5. being in the here and now-find your flow.

Weaving together insights from Japanese history, philosophy, and modern culture, plus stories from renowned sushi chef Jiro Ono, anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, and others, Mogi skillfully shows the way to awaken your ikigai.

Editor's Note

Find your purpose…

The Japanese concept of “ikigai” roughly translates to “your reason to get up in the morning” or finding your purpose. Author Ken Mogi outlines the five pillars of ikigai, starting with finding joy in the little things, being present in the moment, and finding your flow — so you can boost your sense of well-being and happiness.

Super informative book! I really enjoyed learning more about the Japanese culture and how to cultivate some of the concept of Ikigai into my own life...the 5 pillars. Starting with Starting Small

It’s more of an appreciation book of various aspects of perfectionistic Japanese traditions than a here’s how to practice ikigai in your life. It’s pretty boring after awhile if you already know a lot about Japanese culture.

Very good audiobook. Enjoyed it, learned about the Shinto religion. And found some new appreciation for attention to detail and starting small to work toward the hard stuff.

A lot of interesting stuff about Japanese history and culture if you’re into that sort of thing. Not as much about how to truly apply the concept on ones own life. I still do not understand what is meant by “sustainability” in the book and how it applies to modern life.

Interesting reading (listening). However, I believe the narrator mispronounced some of the Japanese terms/names (e.g. "Fujita";"Koshimizu"). Rather funny actually.

This book was lovely! A fun read with practical advice based around the 5 pillars of ikigai. My favorite advice was about the small moments--it took away some of the pressure to come up with a profound purpose in life (at least for now). I've read a few books about ikigai recently, and while they all cover similar stories and concepts, this one is by far my favorite.

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley to read in exchange for an honest review.

This book describes a technique for finding your purpose, as well as helping the reader to understand why it is important to have purpose in your day. It explores many of the self-help elements in similar books.
