      Applegate does it again! Endling strikes the perfect balance between mature enough for adults to enjoy and simple enough for kids to understand, all without feeling pandered to. I personally have a weakness for nonhuman characters dealing with issues only a nonhuman would know as a way to look at issues in a new way, and this book does a great job at it.

      The narrator of the audiobook does a great job keeping with the tone of the book and giving characters voices that add to their stories. For instance (minor spoilers ahead) Tobble’s struggle with being taken seriously strikes even truer when accompanied by a cutesy, slightly silly voice.

      All in all, a highly enjoyable book

      A very gripping adventure. It’s perfect for people who love fantastical stories like The Green Ember series. It even has hints of The Lord of the Rings. It will be a perfect book for family book club with my 10 year old son.

      WHY I GIVE THIS BOOK FIVE STARS—WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT.

      Okay, so…the book is AWESOME!

      The characters come alive and seem to jump off the pages/screen! This book is an outstanding page turner.

      Kathrine Applegate is a very talented story-writer who makes everything seem real.

      Byx and her friends are so brave to go on such an adventure.

      Of course, the beginning is rather…hmmm…sad, but there still is some hope for Byx and her group of friends that it will all turn around.

      You should definitely think about reading this book. {This review written by a 12 year old.}

      This book is lovely and I can really feel like I’m too, on the journey.
      The writing is gorgeous and elegant, at times almost like you’re reading a poem. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read that includes magical elements while also being realistic and has an elegant poem-like feel to it. I can’t wait to read the next book.

      The Last has all the brilliant writing Applegate fans have come to expect, but the story never rises anywhere near the level of her other books. The characters are interesting if not entirely fleshed out. The adventure is okay but a bit slow. I expected a grander ending. This book had the feel of a prologue to a more interesting story to come.

      I hadn't been aware that she had written much after I finished Animorphs and Everworld back when I was younger. But, I'm so glad I rediscovered her as an adult. I adored this book and am very excitedly awaiting the next book in this new world!

      Byx's whole family and pack is slaughtered, leaving her the last of the daryns, intelligent dog/sugar glider creatures one of the 6 ruling species. Without the befriending of a small wobbyk with big ears, she would be too afraid to move on. Life is rough in the kingdom of Nedarra, as Byx and her new traveling companions face many challenges. Sword fights, evil knights, and magic fill this fantasy world. This is the 1st in the series "The Endnling"
