About this audiobook

Brilliant scientist Rose Franklin has devoted her adult life to solving the mystery she accidentally stumbled upon as a child: a huge metal hand buried beneath the ground outside Deadwood, South Dakota. The discovery set in motion a cataclysmic chain of events with geopolitical ramifications. Rose and the Earth Defense Corps raced to master the enigmatic technology, as giant robots suddenly descended on Earth's most populous cities, killing one hundred million people in the process. Though Rose and her team were able to fend off the attack, their victory was short-lived. The mysterious invaders retreated, disappearing from the shattered planet . . . but they took the scientist and her crew with them.

Now, after nearly ten years on another world, Rose returns to find a devastating new war—this time between humans. America and Russia are locked in combat, fighting to fill the power vacuum left behind after the invasion. Families are torn apart, friends become bitter enemies, and countries collapse in the wake of the battling superpowers. It appears the aliens left behind their titanic death machines so humankind will obliterate itself. Rose is determined to find a solution, whatever it takes. But will she become a pawn in a doomsday game no one can win?

Read by William Hope, Charlie Anson, Laurence Bouvard, Adna Sablylich, Laura Kirman, Aaron Vodovoz, Julie Rogers, Christopher Ragland, Patricia Rodrigues, Jennifer Woodward, Karina Fernandez, Eric Meyers, Madeleine Rose, Lance C. Fuller, and the author, Sylvain Neuvel

Author

Sylvain Neuvel

Sylvain Neuvel has taught linguistics in India and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. His girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many toys, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course). His debut, Sleeping Giants, was described by NPR as “one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory.”

This was a solid series overall. I’m so glad I went the audiobook route for all of the books because the full cast elevated the experience.

This was a pretty good book although I think I prefer the first book in the series.

Great writing and dialogue. Voice actors were excellent. Very enjoyable mix of sci-fi and political drama with social commentary mixed in.

Not as good as the previous books in the series, a bit dissapointing as the first two were really unique and engrossing. The narrators are good like in the previous installment of the series. Overall an ok book.

I may have cried while listening to this audiobook.. It was the perfect ending to a series I fell in love with when I saw the first book in my high school library months ago. I'll miss these characters. Especially Vincent and Eva, they're the best father and daughter duo I've ever read about.

Great series that will make you think about how the world works.

It's was as good as the preceding two books. The full cast narration was as always wonderful. The one qualm I have is Eva being voiced like she's from Spanish Harlem or Queens. She was born and raised in Puerto Rico then spent her formative years on another planet. It took away from a pivotal character.

The first two were so full of intrigue and existential dread and just SO GOOD; but this one really put everything front and center and felt really different. I still enjoyed it, but it’s probably my least favorite.

The conclusion to Sylvain's trilogy was fantastic. It was just as gripping as the other two. My only problem was with the voice actress for Eva. First, they had a different actress and accent, which in itself wasn't a bad call. What I didn't like is that instead of sounding like a young puerto rican girl from the island, where she is from, she instead sounded like a puerto rican girl from NY. That accent got annoying. Otherwise, wonderful series overall.

Lousy voice acting. I've heard better student production s. So-,so script.

I was really disappointed with this third book. The best characters in the series had been killed off, which left us with the annoying ones. I also found the alien language particularly annoying. And new Eva's accent sounded more east coast than Puerto Rican. Overall, it reminded me a lot of how I felt after reading the Hunger Games trilogy. The 1st book was really good, the 2nd was okay, and the 3rd fell flat. I had to laugh when Only Human actually references Mockingjay.

Great series! Book 3 was wraps up the story quite well. My only gripe was the voice/accent of the woman reading Eva's dialogue. Eva is from Puerto Rico and the reader tried to do a Purto Rican accent that ended up sounding like a mix of Boston and New Jersey! lol

Not as good as book one and two. For the audiobook, the person they picked for Eva in book 2 was bad but it was worse in book 3. She sounded like she had been living in Rosie Perez’s house instead of another planet.

The book could have been 3 hours long if he would have omitted all the ignorant liberalism. If it was, it would have been a pretty good third of a trilogy. The author obviously allowed his politics to dilute a good story. He didn’t make that mistake in the previous two.

Oh yeah, the daughter is Spanish. What is the deal with the Long Island accent? Distracting and very strange.
