About this audiobook

“A true psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of All Is Not Forgotten and Emma in the Night

Emotionally guarded Daphne Amos always believed she’d found a kindred spirit in her fiancé, Heath. Both very private people, they’ve kept their pasts hidden from the world, and each other, until Heath’s escalating nightmares begin to put an undeniable strain on their relationship. Determined to give their impending marriage the best chance of succeeding, Heath insists that Daphne join him on a seven-day retreat with Dr. Matthew Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the root of repressed memories. Daphne reluctantly agrees—even though the past is the last place she wants to go.

The retreat’s isolated and forbidding location increases her unease, as do the doctor’s rules: they must relinquish their keys and phones, they’ll be monitored at all hours by hidden cameras, and they’re never to socialize with the other guests.

One sleepless night, Daphne decides to leave her room—and only then does she realize that the institute is not at all what it seems—and that whatever’s crying out from Heath’s past isn’t meant to be heard. It’s meant to be silenced.

Loved the story, but the reader was horrible with the lip smacking. I had to struggle hard to finish the book.

The story was ok. The narrator however.. If you like loud, wet swallowing sounds as someone speaks, you are in luck.

The book is really sit on the edge of your seat book! However, the lady reading was a problem. While she did an awesome job of building the characters through her voices, THE SWALLOWING and SMACKING loudly in my ear drove me nuts! Some people are very offended by smacking and I happen to be one of them. It simply grossed me out and made me want to stop listening. Being a literature teacher, I loved the allusions to Wuthering Heights...one of my all time favorite novels to teach to Seniors in high school!

The story line was ok but the narrator smacked her lip. And every inhale made a gurgling sound. It was kind of icky and destructing. And you could here her swallow her own saliva .

I'm only 15 minutes into the book and cant finish...the narrator is very breathy and makes sounds with her mouth, hope I'm not missing a a good book because of the not so great narrator.

Sloppy audio editing with way too many distracting breaths and mouth noises left in. This is not the narrator’s fault, but is due to poor audio editing and poor quality control. Couldn’t get past the first few minutes.

The story was just ok but made worse by the constant gulping and swallowing of the narrator. Her intonation was always the same - tired exasperation. No other expression in her voice.

The story didn't do much for me and, unfortunately, the narrator's voice kind of got on my nerves.

Just the right number of twists to keep me engrossed but not so many that I end up saying “Yeah right!” as I’m listening.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS WITH HEADPHONES.

This story is really well written. It’s engaging and, while a little predictable, it kept me interested.

    HOWEVER…

This narrator takes “casual narration” to a new depths…in a terrible, terrible way. The mouth sounds are incessant, she makes disgusting chewing sounds (the sounds are not necessary if the author already described them), and the constant rattling intakes of breath for every single character are so annoying and distracting. Took me right out of the story every time.

It’s too bad that I really enjoyed this author because she exclusively worked with this narrator for her books and there’s no way I can listen to her again.

Great psychological thriller. The plot was great and characters well developed. My favorite part is that this story was compelling right from the intro. I did like the narrator with one exception... she made frequent audible swallowing sounds that made it seem as if she had a mouth full of cud. I mean it was really quite distracting. I did like her conversational tone of narrating this and so maybe in her attempt to “act” through narrating she though those swallows were necessary. Other than that, great book.

I was left a bit disappointed by the end. I did like the premise, good, but it could have been great. The opportunities were there in spades. Heaths perspective could have saved this book.

Great story - original and unpredictable. Good narration, if a little awkward at times.

Good story. She did a good job flowing the story through the present and past. Not a huge fan of the narrator(most voices were the same). There was also not really a pause between the last word in a chapter and the start of the next chapter. Overall though, good story that kept me listening and interested the whole time.

The book was good and kept my attention- the narrator was a little bit distracting, though. Heavy breath taking with phlegm sounds along with swallowing and other mouth noises for effect nearly made me stop listening. The story was good enough that I kept pushing through.

Started this 2 times and I just can’t get past the third chapter, even listening to the full first and second chapters were torture.
I don’t know if it was because of Carpenter’s prose or the voice actress was just a really bad choice.

Narrators sounded bored and her breathy, noisy swallowing narration almost made me stop listening. Enjoyed the story, hated the narration. Advice, get a good night's sleep and hydrate before attempting to narrate a book.

It started slow at first and not the type of books I usually give a chance but I did this time because I was driving and couldn’t find another one to listen too, so glad I was driving! Give it a chance, it’s great!

Another great book by Emily Carpenter. I loved the nonlinear storytelling, shifting between present, recent past, and distant past; it built tension and suspense while driving character development. I thought the ending was a little drawn out, but overall I couldn’t put the book down; I even fell asleep while listening to it.
