About this audiobook

She may not know exactly who is in her house. But she knows why they are there...

A house swap becomes the eerie backdrop to a chilling look inside a broken marriage filled with tantalizing secrets.

When Caroline and Francis receive an offer to house swap—from their city apartment to a house in a leafy, upscale London suburb—they jump at the chance for a week away from home, their son, and the tensions that have pushed their marriage to the brink.

As the couple settles in, the old problems that permeate their marriage—his unhealthy behaviors, her indiscretions—start bubbling to the surface. But while they attempt to mend their relationship, their neighbor, an intense young woman, is showing a little too much interest in their activities.

Meanwhile, Caroline slowly begins to uncover some signs of life in the stark house—signs of her life. The flowers in the bathroom or the music might seem innocent to anyone else—but to her they are clues. It seems the person they have swapped with is someone who knows her, someone who knows the secrets she's desperate to forget. . . .

Be careful who you let in. . .

If I had known it involved cheating and an affair in a marriage I would not have picked it up. Wasn't for me and maybe it was my frame of mind when trying to get through the book, but I did not enjoy it.

I think I gave this one four stars instead of 3 because I listened to the audio book of this story and the creepiness factor when the stranger in Caroline's and Francis' house spoke was great. The narrator did an awesome job with this character. Caroline and Francis are moving into another person's home for a week, while that person stays in theirs using a House Swap registry. They needed a getaway to patch up their tense marriage without their son, Eddie, who is staying with Caroline's mom. A House Swap provides the perfect opportunity for a budget friendly getaway. The story is told in two timelines, home in the past and away in the present day. In the past, Caroline’s marriage was in trouble. She is having an affair with a younger man and Francis has a drug addiction. In the present, the couple seems to be working on fixing their marriage. Francis is understanding and seems to be trying but when Caroline starts to notice little signs in the house that reminds her of her past with Carl, she has trouble concentrating on her marriage. Then there is Amber, the young woman who lives across the street, who seems a bit too friendly and reminds Caroline of her past. Who is Amber? What happened in Caroline's past? Who is the stranger living in Caroline's flat?

This is a domestic or psychological thriller with a bit of a mystery. I like how the secrets are slowly revealed, letting the reader see what is going on and what happened in the past. Unfortunately for many readers, this might also be the downfall, that the book is too slow. It is almost 3/4 of the way through before we find out what happened in the past to cause the problems in the present. Once that is revealed the story moves quickly to the surprising twist before the bittersweet ending. The story is basically told from Caroline's POV, but there are a few sections told by Francis and of course the mysterious voice who is wreaking havoc on Caroline's flat. Caroline is a very unlikeable character. She changes as the story progresses, but she was not my favourite, actually, I didn't really like anyone in this book, but that was okay. This book will be an enjoyable read if you like a slow burning mystery. If you get the opportunity to listen to this one, I say go for it, and then consider a House Swap of your own.

I've stayed in numerous B and B's while travelling, but have never actually swapped houses with someone. And honestly, I don't think I would want to. My penchant for suspense and thriller reads provides too much fuel for an abundance of imagined scenarios.....The House Swap by Rebecca Fleet gives rise to those imaginings.Francis and Caroline's marriage has been rocky for the last few years. They are trying to pick up the pieces and get past what has happened. A week away will give them some together time, away from their day to day life. And they could save money by house swapping with someone. Uh huh. They do swap, but the house they land in is oddly sterile, with not many personal touches. But there are a few and they seem to be oddly familiar to Caroline. The neighbour a few houses down also seems strangely interested in Caroline as well. Caroline is indeed keeping secrets - and it seems like someone else wants them revealed. What happened in the past is only slowly revealed in entries from 'then'. As details are added, what's going on in the present becomes clearer. That slow reveal makes for addictive reading. The 'who' and 'why' ended up not being what I had imagined. Fleet adroitly manipulates the reader's expectations and assumptions along the way. The unknown other person is given italicized entries - and they will keep you guessing.Fleet's depiction of a marriage in trouble is believable, harsh and sharp in its presentation. Francis is also given a voice, providing an alternate look at Caroline's depiction of their marriage. I must admit, I didn't like either Caroline or Francis at all. I felt sorry for their young son as he doesn't seem to be the priority in either parent's life. The House Swap is a combination of domestic drama and suspense. It's a bit of a slow burn, but does pick up speed midway. I didn't love the ending, but enjoyed the journey there. A good debut and I would pick up Fleet's next book. I do have to say that The House Swap has cemented my decision to not house swap!

I liked the basic story and it was a good thriller but I found this book confusing. I don't know if it was because the story flipped back and forth in time (which I'm not fond of) or it was because you needed to read the chapter headings.I kept forgetting to read the headings and because of that I would end a chapter with one character, start the next one and ind that I was getting confused. So I had to go back to the chapter heading to see who was narrating and in what period of time it was. Even with this, I recommend this book but remember to read those headings.

I enjoyed this book. This type of premise always seems to lead to an interesting story. This time, the story was just a little bit crazy. I think if I’d had all the information early on, I may have guessed who was in the house. Regardless, this book kept me interested and I was surprised more than once. I can’t say I was blown away by the ending as I somewhat expected it, but I was shocked that it actually happened.

This was an emotional roller coaster. Caroline is married to Francis, but is attracted to Carl, her co-worker. Caroline and Francis are parents to Eddie.
The story is told between 2013 and 2015. Caroline and Francis are trying to reconcile, and decide to go on vacation using a house swap site. However, when Caroline and Francis arrive at their destination, Caroline is unsettled, and too many things remind her of Carl.
Then, things get really strange, and she starts to correspond with the person she knew only as S Kennedy.
Just when you think you know what is happening, a curve ball is thrown your way.
This is about sexual obsession, affairs, secrets, drug addiction, spouses trying to work on a marriage, revenge, and overwhelming sadness.
    It is a haunting story.

I was really intrigued by the description of this book and while I did enjoy it, it just didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like I hoped. I think it had the potential to get really intense but it kind of fell flat. It was a good story overall, just not as much of a thriller as I usually like.

I was given a copy of this galley courtesy of the First to Read program in exchange for my honest review.

After the hard time they have gone through in their relationship, Caroline and Francis need a vacation, best without their son Eddie. A house swap seems to be a good idea so they leave Leeds for a week in the suburbs of London. Somehow the house is strange, it looks like nobody actually lives in there, it is absolutely impersonal, almost clinical. But the woman seemed to be nice enough to let her into their own apartment. When Caroline receives a strange message on her cell phone, she is alarmed: did something awake the ghosts of the past? Did her ex affair Carl get in contact again? And who is this strange neighbour Amber who seems to observe them and behaves in a very strange way when she comes to visit them late in the evening. Caroline can sense the danger but she doesn’t know where it is really coming from...The novel starts at quite some low pace and admittedly I was a bit annoyed because I couldn’t make sense of a lot of things at the beginning. It was obvious that Francis and Caroline had some problems in the past, she had an affair with a colleague, he was addicted to pills, but since this had happened obviously two years before, I didn’t quite understand the relevance of all this for the house swap. And there was this voice talking to Caroline, but it was not clear where it was coming from. I do not really like to be in the dark and not understanding anything. However, the further you get in the novel and the more you understand, the more thrill you feel and the better the plot gets. Of course you are supposed to run in the completely wrong direction with the assumptions of what is behind all this – eagerly I did – just to learn then that it is not only much more complicated, very cleverly constructed, and also a lot more dangerous for the characters than you would have assumed.“The Swap House” is a fantastic thriller as soon as you get over the first few pages. It can surprise and offers an especially interesting psychological aspect which is only revealed towards the end.

The House Swap is about just that, swapping homes. Caroline and Francis’ marriage is rocky to say the least and when an offer to swap houses for a week comes to Caroline, she takes it. Leaving their young son with her mother, they go to London to hopefully rekindle their marriage. Caroline soon discovers things are not quite right in this house. There are clues of her life here, but she’s been here nor met the owner. There are two time lines with in this story – 2013 when Francis and Caroline’s marriage is crumbling and 2015 when they are away at the house swap. It adds a little mystery as to what was going in 2013 that would come to haunt Caroline in 2015. But is takes a while to get there and moves a little slow. I did like the ending and am glad I stuck with it.
