About this audiobook
“Greenwood’s glowing dark ruby of a novel brilliantly transforms the true crime story that inspired Nabokov’s Lolita. Shatteringly original and eloquently written....So ferociously suspenseful, I found myself holding my breath.” —Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You
Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation and inspired Vladimir Nabokov to write his controversial and iconic Lolita, Rust & Stardust is a heart-pounding audiobook by award-winning author T. Greenwood, who at last gives a voice to Sally herself.
Camden, NJ, 1948. When 11 year-old Sally Horner steals a notebook from the local Woolworth's, she has no way of knowing that 52 year-old Frank LaSalle, fresh out of prison, is watching her, preparing to make his move. Accosting her outside the store, Frank convinces Sally that he’s an FBI agent who can have her arrested in a minute—unless she does as he says.
This chilling audiobook traces the next two harrowing years as Frank mentally and physically assaults Sally while the two of them travel westward from Camden to San Jose, forever altering not only her life, but the lives of her family, friends, and those she meets along the way.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I don't often give 5⭐ reviews, however, " Rust & Stardust" by T. Greenwood, narrated by Therese Plummer is very deserving of every star. This novel is a very emotional retelling of the 1948 kidnapping of 11 year old Sally Horner. Although this is a fictionalized novel, the author researched this true crime case in depth and then seamlessly blended the facts into her storyline. She does explain, however, that she is not a true crime writer & that the goal of this novel focussed on filling in the unknown blanks to give the reader more perspective on what Sally, the family, and other individuals that became involved in this case may have experienced as a result of the kidnapping. The author does a great job blending fact & fiction and developing the characterisation that makes readers feel that the emotions expressed are legitimate. Hearing the story told by differing POVs improves the storyline & takes the reader into the realm of what could have been Sally's reality. It is very easy to forget that this is a fictionalized novel as you become immersed in this heart wrenching story. I would suggest that you keep some tissues at hand, if you are listening to this very well narrated audiobook. Sad and beautifully written novel that I would highly recommend. Although the kidnapping occurred in 1948, the family's experience, their grief, and other emotions and Sally's experience is sadly still quite relevant today given the number of kidnappings & sex crimes against children that still occur in this day & age. I was also quite surprised to discover that on the morning of September 6th, 1949, just outside of Camden, N.J., Howard Unruh, a World War II veteran, went on a 12-minute rampage with a Luger, killing 13 people. His victims included three children under 10 and 10 adults. It is often considered the first mass shooting in American history. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a story!! Deserves 10 stars! This book sounded intriguing when I listened to the sample, but I had NO IDEA what a sad, beautiful, mesmerizing, and ultimately tragic treat I was actually in for. Beautiful, impeccable, gorgeous writing depicting a fictionalized account of an all too true story, with one breathtaking performance by Thérèse Plummer. Absolutely very highly recommended!
