      The Perfectly Proper Paranormal MuseumBy Kirsten WeissMaddie ends up back in her home town and enjoying seeing her friends again. She had been in a big paying job but got fired for not taking bribes. She agrees to help her friend out by managing the Paranormal Museum for her friend and it's next door to the Tea Shop her friend is trying to renovate.But, when they go to look at the shops, there is a dead body in there!There are a lot of interesting characters in here. A hot guy lives next to the Museum, her high school bully is a cop, a black cat lives in the Museum that is said to see ghosts, and more!Great world building, I felt I knew the place inside and out. The characters seemed real. Dialogue was fun. Humor scattered throughout the book.There are mysteries and mysteries! I enjoyed it. A book not too heavy but a little more meat on the bones than a regular cozy. I listened to the audio version and the narration was wonderful!

      1st in a series. Fun mystery where a woman finds herself becoming the owner of the local paranormal museum. At the start of the book she and a friend find a body in the museum and her friend is accused of the murder. Along the way we meet an interesting cast of characters and she also proves an old murder case. Fun and kind of light hearted mystery.

      I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book. It had its moments, some interesting characters, but without the the Ghost detecting cat, and the hunky motorcycle shop owner, I'm not sure I would have made it through. The murder mystery wasn't very hard to solve, and some of the "regular" characters could stand some greater development. I might try another, but definitely not right away.

      This is the first book in the Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum series. I am not a big lover of the supernatural, witches kind of book so was pleasantly surprised that this book was a good Cozy Mystery with just a hint of the supernatural/paranormal thrown in. Maddie has returned home to San Benedetto after being fired from her globe-trotting job for refusing to offer a bribe to government officials to get a job done for her company. She comes from an over-achieving family so is at odds when the book begins. Not being able to find a new job has her at loose ends, so when her friend Adele asks her to take over the Paranormal Museum attached to her tea shop she decides to help her friend out. The museum is more creepy than paranormal with a "Creepy Doll" room and some other artifacts that claim to be "haunted". When they find a dead body inside, they scramble to solve the case as both of them are suspects. Adele eventually gets arrested, so Maddie buckles down to figure out what happened.

      I really liked the characters. Maddie, Adele and Harper have been friends for years and we get to see a little bit of their close and loyal relationship. We find out tidbits about them that I hope will be expanded on in the next book. Maddie's neighbour and possible love interest, Mason, is a builder of motorcycles and motorcycle lover. He just happens to be in the right place at the right time to help Maddie solve her problems. He is gorgeous, friendly and a little bit funny and Maddie looks like she is heading into a romance. The quirky Herb, who sells her artifacts for the museum is a bit of comic relief and even the cat, GD cat (ghost detecting cat) has a personality all his own. They all mesh together very well.

      The book has a lot going for it. There were times that I laughed at the more outrageous characters and their actions and there were quite a few of those. The mystery was interesting and I did not figure out the culprit at all. It made sense at the end, but I has another suspect in mind throughout most of the book. There was a touch of paranormal which added a bit of fun too. There was a second mystery within the book with Maddie trying to solve a murder from the early 1900s. All these things were balanced quite well in the book and I am definitely looking forward to the second one in the series. The story kept me reading until I could find out what happened, a big draw for me with a new series. I recommend this to readers of Cozy Mysteries who enjoy trying to figure out "who dunnit" while being entertained. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

      I really enjoyed this interesting take on small town quirkiness. This one may have them all beat, but then it is a paranormal town as are all, or almost all the inhabitants. So what would one expect on returning to what was her old home. Well, I suppose, expect the unexpected would be about right, and Maddie is certainly going to get that. Three very good friends are going to need each other's support and caring as shenanigans appear to be common, especially when Maddie's friend Adele tries to talk her into buying the Paranormal Museum which just happens to be attached to the tea room she is opening. Why Maddie would want the museum is as unsure as Maddie herself.This book by Kirsten Weiss is a good solid story with differences from the usual cozies. First, Maddie had a very good job but now is at odds with herself. Adele is from money via the winery her father owns. Harper, the third in the group of young women make up the threesome who are glad to get back together. They've been through a lot, are they ready for more? Spells, ghosts, murder and mayhem seems to be the main attraction in this magical town. And who is suspected of a murder but one of the three. Was it one of them? Was it a so-called "ghost"? Was it a break-in?Maddie has pretty well decided she may like to buy the museum, the thought is kind of growing on her, especially with GD cat, the cat that sees ghosts. She's left the business world behind but certainly has the ability to bring it up to snuff. There's so much going on in this book, and then of course, there's that gorgeous guy upstairs! So if paranormal, ghosts, old relics of the supernatural days of spiritualists, and/or murder is to your liking, this is sure good reading.

      3.5*Book source ~ NetGalleyMaddie Kosloski’s career has taken a turn right into the dumper. All because she did the right thing. After running home with her tail between her legs and unsuccessfully job hunting for months, when her friend Adele tricks her into managing the Paranormal Museum until she can find someone else, Maddie finds she’s enjoying it, despite her protests to the contrary. When Adele is arrested for a murder Maddie knows she didn’t’ commit and then another murder happens as well as strange goings on at the museum, she finds herself playing amateur sleuth. Can she solve the murders and get her friend cleared or will she end up just like the other victims?I thought this would have more paranormal with it being in the title and all, but it’s still got a bit of the paranormal in it if you believe in ghosts. It’s definitely got mystery as well as a large suspect pool. Maddie is a decent character and the rest aren’t bad. There are two potential romantic prospects for Maddie and I’m not sure which I’d pick since they haven’t had much page time and thus I don’t have a good feel of them. For them. *cough* I mean, for them. The mystery kept me guessing even if the writing isn’t stellar. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s just not awesome. Kinda middle of the road. It is an entertaining read and I would definitely read more if this book turns into a series. Though I’m not sure how much murder the author can write about in a small town where there hadn’t been a murder for decades before this book. Might be a bit limiting.

      The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum by Kirsten WeissSource: Netgalley My Rating: 3/5 starsMy Review: I’m not entirely sure how anyone can pass up a book with a title like The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum??? In fact, the title is exactly what drew me to this quirky, light mystery and the characters that kept me reading all the way through to the end. Maddie: Maddie is the very definition of a person getting screwed for doing the right thing. When her lucrative career came crashing to a halt, Maddie retreated to her hometown to lick her wounds and begin the search for a new job. Turns out, finding another equally lucrative job isn’t all that easy to do and explains why Maddie has enough free time to take over the running of the Paranormal Museum. Temporarily! Though she has no real experience running a museum, Maddie does have a good deal of curiosity and the Paranormal Museum is just the place to capture her interest. The exhibits are creepy and once Maddie dives in and starts doing some research, she finds more than one mystery that needs solving. Though she only intends to be at the museum temporarily, Maddie finds it is an easy place to become connected to and invested in. She immediately looks for ways to improve the site, draw in more visitors, and encourage more involvement from the community. That last one is met with some seriously funny resistance that causes Maddie to dig her heals in.Adele: Not to be confused with the British bird who sings like a dream. This Adele is outrageously wealthy, newly single, and the prime suspect in the murder of her ex-fiancé’s new fiancé. It doesn’t help at all that the murder victim was found by Adele (and Maddie) in Adele’s still-under-construction tea room which happens to be attached to the Paranormal Museum. Did you follow all that? Adele’s attitude makes her a hard character to like but you do feel some sympathy for her situation. Her money gives her some distinct advantages including having a team of lawyers to plead her case and the ability to literally give the Paranormal Museum to her out-of-work best-friend. Mason: Oh! There has to be a love interest and Mason is about as good as it gets. Mason starts off quite cranky but quickly warms up to Maddie and is willing to help her solve the various mysteries she has on her plate. Mason is big and tough, kind and caring (when he’s not cranky!), and smokin’ hot. The more he becomes involved with Maddie, the more protective he becomes which leads to some seriously crazy/heroic actions. Though Mason doesn’t appear a lot in this read, his appearances are significant and hold the promise of more to come in later installments of the series.GD Cat: Stop thinking I’m cursing at you! GD is Ghost Detecting and this cat may be the coolest character in the whole book! I love this cat with his bad attitude, judgmental looks, and ghost detecting abilities. GD has a habit of showing up at the most inopportune times, making his displeasure known to all, and leaving when there is nothing to knock off a counter or shelf. Typical effing cat The Bottom Line: The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum is a strange and quirky light mystery that turned out to be a decent read. The characters, both major and minor are the driving force behind this read and compensate for an alright plot. The mystery really is light and just as quirky as most of the characters. In all, I wouldn’t put this title at the very top of the TBR list but I wouldn’t reject it either. The Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum makes a good read for those times when you’re in between series or just don’t know what to read next.

      Of course I was lured to this book by the "Paranormal" themed museum the main character gets to manage when coming back to her home town. However, the book turned out to be a very lightweight women's whodunit mystery, whereas the paranormal museum served only as an unusual setting. So, apart from the obvious murder, there is the GD (ghost detecting) cat and an unsolved historical murder case that our heroine gets intrigued with and starts to investigate. Also, some mysterious sounds, temperature drops and the like may hint at ghost activity, but unfortunately that's all there is to it.The museum's paranormal exhibits - creepy dolls, a ghost cabinet (loved that one, never heard of such a thing before), an ouija board and other strange stuff - would have made excellent raw material for a supernatural story, but other than to throw them in for good measure the author seemed to have no use for them, which is a shame and definitely a missed opportunity. As is, I wouldn't have minded if the story played in a boutique, a jewelery or any other store. Those may even have been more fitting, considering the recurring detailed descriptions of the women's clothing style.Overall, this is a perfectly proper murder mystery - nothing to say against that, but just not what I expected. So don't let yourself be fooled (as I did) to think the adjective "Paranormal" has any deeper meaning - like the museum's exhibits it seems to be there for decoration purposes only. However, I do like the cover image.A relaxing easy read recommended for lazy beach days or boring train rides.(I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review)
