About this audiobook

A tender and fantastical adventure story perfect for fans of Coraline.

After Cecelia Dahl’s little brother, Celadon, dies tragically, his soul goes where all souls go: the Land of Yesterday—and Cecelia is left behind in a fractured world without him.

Her beloved house’s spirit is crumbling beyond repair, her father is imprisoned by sorrow, and worst of all, her grief-stricken mother abandons the land of the living to follow Celadon into Yesterday.

It’s up to Cecelia to put her family back together, even if that means venturing into the dark and forbidden Land of Yesterday on her own. But as Cecilia braves a hot-air balloon commanded by two gnomes, a sea of daisies, and the Planet of Nightmares, it’s clear that even if she finds her family, she might not be able to save them.

And if she’s not careful, she might just become a lost soul herself, trapped forever in Yesterday.

This story could be an instant classic for the right kind of reader. Anyone who has fought their way back from the edge of grief will recognize the themes immediately. The universe is so different from ours and yet so eerily familiar. The writing will suck you into this weird, beautiful, and mysterious world.

I'm sort of struggling to say something different than what in all the other reviews. It's a bit like Coraline, Howl's Moving Castle, and I found so much Alice of Wonderland that it took my breath away.

Cecilia is smart, intuitive, loyal and heartbroken. I loved that she drew from the legend of St Joan of Arc to channel her bravery. She's tragically lost her brother Celdaon and trying to make sense of her new, splintered reality. Her Mom is lost, and her Dad soon will be, and then Cecilia plunges into the Land of Yesterday, desperately trying to put her broken family back together until even her house is involved. The best part is that it works both as a literal adventure as well as a metaphor for the grieving process. Reading the note from the author explaining the inspiration for the story pushed my tears out and over the edge.

From the lovely cover of THE LAND OF YESTERDAY to the final pages, K. A. Reynolds has written a magical story of a family and a house, a house like you’ve never before seen. The Land of Yesterday is where all souls go when they die. It, too, is a land like you’ve never before seen. This is a story about the death of a young boy and the effect it has on the mother, father, and sister, as well as on their most unusual house. It took me a while to get into what was happening to the characters, but when I finally did, I understood Cecelia Dahl and what she had to do. This is a sad story about life and death, love and forgiveness. And for those that have lost family members, especially young ones, they most likely will understand Cecelia’s emotions and reasons for attempting to bring her brother home again.I think middle grade, tween, and teen readers, as well as adults will enjoy reading K. A. Reynolds stories. It would be a nice addition for school libraries, public libraries, and your personal library. Happy Reading
