Reviews for Mother Knows Best
29 ratings3 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a wonderful straightforward guide to basic obedience and the standard training methods used by most trainers for many years. The author gives some background as to why certain techniques work but mostly concentrates on the techniques themselves. She starts with puppyhood and moves up to advanced obedience. If I were to have one book on my shelf about dog training, it would be this one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Based on the premise that the domesticated dog is recently descended from a pack animal, this book proposes a natural method of behavior modification using methods that the dog is wired to understand. Very, very detailed instructions for on and off leash training with ample discussion of the underlying motivation of dog behaviour and illustrative examples from the author's own experience as a dog trainer. There is a LOT of information presented given the length of the book and at times this can be rather daunting as can the admonitions of the time and effort required (although we assured that it will be well worth it). About the only thing missing is a summary Curriculum for an adult dog (there is one included for puppies).
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This should be required reading for anyone interested in getting a dog!
