About this audiobook

Last month, Alex Barrow's whole life imploded-partner, home, job, all gone in forty-eight hours. But sometimes when everything falls apart, better things appear almost like magic. Now, he's back in his Michigan hometown, finally opening the bakery he's always dreamed of. But the pleasure of opening day is nothing compared to the lonely and beautiful man who bewitches Alex before he even orders.

Corbin Wale is a weirdo. At least, that's what he's heard his whole life. He knows he's often in a fantasy world, but the things he feels are very real. And so is the reason why he can never, ever be with Alex Barrow. Even if Alex is everything he's always fantasized about. Even if maybe, just maybe, Corbin is Alex's fantasy too.

When Corbin begins working at the bakery, he and Alex can't deny their connection any longer. As the holiday season works its magic, Alex yearns for the man who seems out of reach. But to be with Alex, Corbin will have to challenge every truth he's ever known. If his holiday risk pays off, two men from different worlds will get the love they've always longed for.

Contains mature themes.

I’m awe struck. This was one of the most magical and beautiful books I’ve ever read. Roan Parrish is a master writer. Her use of language, the gorgeous descriptions, the sweet story that flowed and ebbed so naturally…it was all just so lovely. It felt like a lyrical poem that grew into a story. A wonderful, heartwarming story about true love and our true selves. This book touched me, and I’m sitting here wishing it wasn’t over, but at the same time, feeling so warm and satisfied with the elegant ending.

Corbin is a gentle soul who's been crashed over the years by an intolerant society. Alex is confident and so intirely good that the combination of these two men is complete and perfect. I liked the way Corbin's mind works, his imagination helped him survive and than it made his love great and complete.

While I can understand where this book was trying to go I wasn’t a fan. I was reading it for the romance so the very long stretched out narrative of inner thoughts for the whole book was way too much. For me it felt like they barely interacted. It had good bones. I liked the neurodivergent main character and the baked goods (I’m a pastry chef) but it was just a bit too heavy in that aspect and not even Pugh romance for me. The sex scenes were hot and interesting I will say that and the narrator was wonderful.

I really enjoyed this book. I'm not sure I love the characters, but there's really great character depth, especially for Corbin. Alex seems a bit too good to be true. Once we really get into Corbin's head, we don't really see Alex's perspective any more, so I really didn't get a sense of why Alex chose Corbin and continued choosing him. I'm honestly not sure why Alex wasn't weirded out by each confession. Corbin's unique background also created a power imbalance in the relationship which Alex never took advantage of.

I wouldn't consider this a happy book, though it does have a HEA. The themes and awkwardness were too constant for the reader to fully settle into joy. But it's not an angsty read either.

This book had me getting a little frustrated with Corbin’s internal long winded musings had me wanting to skip forward (audio book) through it, just a little over the top with that and had my interest wondering.
    (the reason for my 3 ⭐️ ‘s)
I felt bad for Corbins up bringing and his aunts having him believe his family was cursed if he fell in love. Corbin had a different personality than your typical person which most people criticized and bullied him for but he survived the best way he could. Alex was able to see what what a treasure he was and finally convinced Corbin to give them a chance . This was not an instant lust/love book but two people working for what they wanted. ?

The narrator needs to speed up and get rid of the depressed and sarcastic pills he’s taken... the story is pathetic and not worth bothering with, as it’s dry, boring and basic

This was quite a nice surprise. I randomly found this book browsing Amazon as it popped up in a "since you liked this other book" recommendation and it was on sale so I figured why not. This reminded me a lot of the manic pixi dream girl YA books I read as a teenager only with my favourite fan fiction tropes thrown in. Down on his luck business owner that can bake? Yes please. (Probably) Autistic artist virgin with a dreamy look in his eyes? Sign me up. Everything coated in magical realism? Just take my wallet. Parrish also has her characters actually talk to each other about ~feelings~ GASP while making them still seem pretty realistic for two adult men characters. Bonus that they're both pretty thirsty for each other. It basically has all the elements to make this a book I couldn't put down and one that I'll be thinking about for a while - especially about some of the bakes described. I really want that oatmeal toast with cinnamon sugar.
The only thing that bummed me out was this looks like a one-off instead of a series, as it was written in 2017 and nothing else has been mentioned from the author. I'd have loved to see Gareth and Orin's story.

I adored this story so much. I don't think I've ever read an MC like Corbin Wale. He's a person people write off as crazy or not all there, but I love how his perspective shows him to be a deeply caring, sensitive man who's developed ways to cope with all the challenges and trauma life has thrown him. I love that Alex takes his time to make Corbin comfortable and puts in the work to create a friendship before diving into a relationship. Alex doesn't invalidate Corbin's experiences or feelings and makes him feel welcome and wanted. A+ pairing and an all around lovely reading experience.

Roan Parrish has been one of my favorite authors for a long time. her Riven series and Better Than People and Best Laid Plans] standalones are three of my all-time, and many times read, favorites. There was so much to like about this book. It was close to resembling a fairytale. Corbin was almost magical in his innocent. Alex was beyond gentle and understanding with him. It’s not by any means a breezy, quick read... it’s not dark...it’s just complex. It’s a slow burn, but it makes sense how Alex and Corbin come together. Even Alex’s best friend, Garth, fit perfectly into the story. I hated the name of Alex’s bake shop...and I thought that Corbin and Alex should have been portrayed as more the adults that they were, and, Corbin , especially, less childlike. Still a good story with really sweet and loveable characters A word of warning: You can gain 25 pounds just reading about the things that Alex and Corbin bake for Alex's coffee shop:)
