About this audiobook
“Creepy and oh so clever!” —Alice Feeney, bestselling author of Sometimes I Lie
A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica
Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.
Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.
Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I’ve read several other of kubicas books, local missing woman for example. This one was disappointing to me. The plot was just building up to nothing the entire book. Wouldn’t recommend

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5If you hold on through confusing and boring passages, you’ll come the the very very end where the main question about the ssn is left UNanswered. Boo.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It could have been better. It was confusing. Still not sure what happened to her daughter. Left with more questions then answers.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was just ok...I think her not sleeping stretched out too long..
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It should’ve been entitled “sliding into lunacy”. Or some such…. Kind of a Dallas turn?
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Whole lot of nothing.
Loose ends needed to be tied up. Some questions remain unanswered. Unsatisfying. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is the 3rd book I have read by this author and my least favorite. By the end it tied things up nicely and i liked it better but I almost stopped reading it as it just got very strange in the second half. I'm glad I stuck with it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good story, but disappointing ending. It feels jagged and incomplete.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The twists and turns made for an interesting ending. I highly recommend reading this!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Well written. Ending wasn’t quite what I wanted it to be, but that’s how it goes
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Well I didn’t see that coming??? I have mixed emotions.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Disappointing non twist of an ending, leaves the reader feeling insulted instead of surprised.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was a Great book, Even if i expected a different ending.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5great book, although too disorienting at times, its worth it to the end
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was a bit disappointed with this book since other books of Mary Kubica have been better. I did not like that a big part of the book turned øut to be only a dream. I hate that in books, it almost feels like you have been deceived.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5What an anticlimax!!! The worst book I have read in a long time. The book did not hold my attention, the story line was not captivating and honestly it was chore to read, however, after seeing the review below (an unexpected ending) I decided to read to the end. I regret that decision massively, the ending was disappointing and uneventful. Honestly, I’m still sitting here thinking WTF?!
It’s told from 2 points of view, a women in the present and a women in the past. I personally dreaded the present women’s chapters, not a lot happens in them and personally I found the insomnia effects interesting at first, but then just became very repetitive.2 people found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Not a mystery at all….disappointing all around. I think this belongs in fiction, not mystery

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5One of the only books I’m going to stop part way… I’ve made it to chapter 13 and just can’t take it anymore. Jessie’s story is alright, and if it were just hers, I’d consider continuing. Eden’s story on the other hand… gah. She’s in her mid 20s, just moved to a shore town with her husband and in 3mos she’s losing her mind abt not instantly conceiving a child. Her jealousy and judgmental behavior about her neighbor is EXHAUSTING and her desperation is a 1000xs worse. I chose to bail at the point where Eden has decided to steal someone’s kid… and is trying to convince herself ‘she’s not a bad person’….
The combination of the pathetic desperate self entitled behavior of Eden and the # of reviews saying the ending is terrible have convinced me it’s time to move on!!1 person found this helpful
