About this audiobook

Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview-to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they . . . offered me the job?

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course-with a pay raise.

Make sure to check out the companion series, The Guild Codex: Demonized, available now, and The Guild Codex: Warped, coauthored by Rob Jacobsen, available summer 2020.

This is a great start to a series when you have a character with a bad temper and jaded outlook on people in general. The world-building on the Mythica is building up throughout the story and there is more details that unfolded as the story progresses. The relationships being built are slow burning, but thoroughly enjoyable. This is a true Urban Fantasy tale that is bringing a human into a world of supernatural beings. That is what makes it compelling read/listen. The audio is also very well produced and the narrator is really great. I enjoyed very much.

This story was a fresh and interesting take on fantasy. I liked the fish out of water angle and appreciated how capable Tori proved herself to be when she found herself facing poor odds, despite being the only human in an environment of supernatural people.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot. I will not however be reading anymore in the series and that’s a shame bc I enjoyed the world this writer created. So why won’t I be finishing it…..It’s probably stupid but it’s the direction I think this book is headed. I absolutely can’t stand books with love triangles. They drive me absolutely crazy. Especially when the heroine is leading guys on and she’s so upset bc she just can’t choose between the two. Reading it I was sure it was going to be a reverse harem which I don’t like so I looked at other books in the series and it says it wasn’t. But she gets turned on by both Ezra and Aaron. She tries to get poetic about the 3 different pairs of eyes staring at her ?. She promises Aaron a date while pages before was mesmerized by Ezra. So yeah I’m going to stop here while the book is ahead rather then spend the next 6 books waiting to see where it leads, who she ends up with and how many of them she dates.

So good!!! I read these in the wrong order the first time around. I started with the Demonized series, then did the Spellbound series and the first book from the Warped Series. Since then, there are new books plus a reading order from the author I found online. They are not only worthy of 5 stars but a reread on the ones I already finished. This book (book 1) in the reading order starts the Codex world off with a human who needs a job and winds up mixed in with mythics. Its captivating, funny and draws you in to a world with many points of view, when you get into the complete series. The main character is snarky, lively and relatable in lifes challenges. The Crow and Hammer slowly become her new family. There are a few real heartwarming moments between her, the general manager and three mages. It has all the good aspects of entertainment including fight scenes that are intense and life threatening, some mild romance that doesn't consume the whole plot, funny awkward relatable quirks and magic. What more could you ask for besides a good author that can make you feel like you are right by her side. This author definitely delivers and I look forward to more from her.

Loved this book and the narrator! What wonderful characters. I would certainly watch this if it were turned into a television series. It’s right up my alley. It was so easy for me to put myself into the story as the human badass. We all want to be the heroes, don’t we? Love the way she takes no crap and it doesn’t matter who it is trying to dish it. I strongly recommend this book if you are a fan of magic and the supernatural.

Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Guild Codex: Spellbound series. I borrowed this through Kindle Unlimited. There are going to be seven books total in this series. There is also a sister series to this called Guild Codex: Demonized that weaves in and out of the Spellbound timeline but features different characters. Previous to reading this I have read and enjoyed all of Annette Marie’s other series.Story (4/5): This story is a very traditional urban fantasy/paranormal story. It features Tori who is a rather hot-headed young woman who is trying to find a steady waitressing gig and trying to go to school to learn to start her own business. After being fired (again) for mouthing off at a cruel customer, she stumbles upon a strange bartending job. Ends up things at this bar are a bit different than she expected. This is a pretty typical type of urban fantasy story but it’s fun and well done. I liked the twist of the heroine being normal and not having any magic powers in a situation where everyone else is magical. It’s an easy and fun read with some humor. Characters (5/5): Tori is a fun character and the three mages she interacts with are also very well done. Marie does an amazing job with characters and that shines in this story. Even the side characters are interesting and engaging.Setting (4/5): This is set in the city, a pretty typical urban fantasy setting. I do like the mysterious bar Tori ends up working in, it’s a fun setting.Writing Style (5/5): I absolutely love Marie’s writing style; it's just so readable and absolutely sucks me in. She really excels at making excellent characters, fun situations, witty dialogue, and does a wonderful job with action scenes as well. This reminds me more of the “Steel and Stone” series than her “Red Winter” series. My Summary (4.5/5): Overall this was just so much fun to read and so hard to put down. This is one of those books where I kept finding excuses to sneak off by myself and read it when I should have been doing other things. I would highly recommend it if you enjoy light-hearted urban fantasies. I am immediately going to pick up the next book “Dark Arts and a Daiquiri”.

Three Mages and a MargaritaThe Guild Codex: Spellbound Series, Book 1By: Annette MarieNarrated by: Cris DukehartThis really is a fun book! A short tempered, take no sass gal can't keep a job. She comes across a flyer for a job at a bar in a bad part of town. Desperate, she takes it. She still has her anger issues but no one cares! She soon finds out why and why they shouldn't have hired her! Lots of magic, action, not mages, and craziness! Fun book! The narrator made it super special too!

4.5Book source ~ Kindle Lending LibraryTori Dawson has lost yet another waitressing job due to her quick temper. To make matters worse, her reputation has spread so that she’s unlikely to find a job anywhere downtown. As she’s leaving a café after being turned away, a sheet of paper with three job listings blows right into her face. The first two jobs aren’t appealing, but the third job is for a bartender. Not something she’s ever done, but at least she’s familiar with how to do it. It’s in a not so great part of town, but no too deeply into the bad side so she goes to apply. And is hired. Unfortunately, she has no idea that the Crow and Hammer isn’t just a bar. It’s a guild. For magic users. And that’s when Tori’s life gets very interesting.Omg, what fun this book is! Tori is a great character and the people she meets are just as interesting. The world is fascinating, the plot decent, and there’s humor, too. I totally enjoyed myself with this one. So much so that I went and gorged myself on all the books in the series as well as the two off-shoots connected to it. So be prepared for many more reviews for this new-to-me author and this world of magic, humor, and danger.

A mostly light urban fantasy about a human girl with serious temper issues who gets a job at a bar which turns out to be a gathering place for a guild of super-naturals - users of elemental forces, thought readers, psychics. I'm not sure if the kidnap plot made any sense at all, but the action kept moving right along.

Tori Dawson is down on her luck. Having been fired from yet another waitressing job, she's immediately on the hunt for a new gig so she can make rent next month. Seeing an ad for a bartender at a dive bar Tori decides to give it a try. Beggars can't be choosers after all. Much to her surprise, the Assistant Manager is in a bind and offers Tori a trial shift on the spot. There's some guild meeting planned for the evening and they could use all the help they can get. Things get off to a rocky start as the patrons are borderline hostile and Tori gives the attitude right back. Expecting to be thrown out at the end of the night Tori is instead offered... a job? What kind of bar is this anyway?Three Mages and a Margarita is the first in The Guild Codex by Annette Marie. This story is just so much fun! It achieved the perfect balance of snarky humor, neat magical abilities and action with a small mystery and plucky heroine that hit the mark for me.The story is told entirely from Tori's first person point of view. Tori is your typical feisty redhead with a temper to match. She frequently gives in to impulses and does things she shouldn't. Normally this would be a turn off but instead managed to work in the story's favor. Our introduction of how she handles a difficult restaurant diner she's waiting on is hilarious, if slightly horrifying. Who wouldn't want to call out a customer who is being irrational and behaving badly, even when it causes it a scene? It absolutely sets the tone for the rest of the story.I enjoyed how we're introduced to the Crown and Hammer bar and it's specialized clientele. All the talk of classes and guilds almost put me in mind of a LitRPG, though this is definitely urban fantasy. It makes for a good fish out of water story as Tori discovers that magic is real and everyone around her is some type of mage while she's just a mere human. Referencing the title, there are three mages in particular that stand out, a trio of guys (Aaron, Kai and Ezra) who provide a nice balance to Tori and, of course, offer a potential love interest. I wouldn't call it a love square as there is only real interest in one of the guys, even if they are all "hot as hell" according to Tori. They are also great friends who have powers that compliment each other well. While the characters don't have too much depth, I was fond of them all by the end.The magic system will be fairly familiar to anyone who's read a lot in the genre, with a little different names. I like that the author has given a vast breadth of available magics as this will let her have a lot of fun with future situations.I listened to the audio book narrated by Cris Dukehart. She does a great job of bringing Tori to life and nailing her attitude. Her other characters are pretty good too, though some of the voices sound a little similar. This adventure was exactly what I was looking to read. It has good pacing that steadily picks up for an exciting ending. I will definitely be continuing this series.

*A BAMF heroine without being an overpowered speshul snowflake. She exists!*I love the three guys relationship/bond: strong, smooth, and flawless teamwork.*Casual, easy, without drama 'Let's date!'*And someone who puts their phone on silent when doing a reconnaissance.
