Kingdom of the Blind, the new Chief Inspector Gamache audiobook from the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder.

None of them had ever met the elderly woman.

The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional. But what if, Gamache begins to ask himself, she was perfectly sane?

When a body is found, the terms of the bizarre will suddenly seem less peculiar and far more menacing.

But it isn’t the only menace Gamache is facing.

The investigation into what happened six months ago—the events that led to his suspension—has dragged on, into the dead of winter. And while most of the opioids he allowed to slip through his hands, in order to bring down the cartels, have been retrieved, there is one devastating exception.

Enough narcotic to kill thousands has disappeared into inner city Montreal. With the deadly drug about to hit the streets, Gamache races for answers.

As he uses increasingly audacious, even desperate, measures to retrieve the drug, Armand Gamache begins to see his own blind spots. And the terrible things hiding there.

Louise Penny is a master story-teller. I want to live in her Gamache world of Three Pines so over the years since I discovered her, I try to do that. I cook often for my loved ones & friends; keep everyone as close as possible and keep my mouth shut unless I know I am speaking truth & ( hopefully) kindness. Her mysteries are always complex and sophisticated and above all, absorbing. However, it is her profound understanding of human nature and relationships that keep me yearning for more. I can’t wait for the next one. Thank you Ms. Penny!

It was lovely to return to Three Pines to visit with its residents and discover the career changes made by the members of Armand's squad. There are several different plotlines running. concurrently throughout the book, including: (1) Armand and Myrna serving as liquidators of the estate of an unknown woman who worked as a house cleaner but insisted she was a Baroness and whose family has been entrenched for generations in estate litigation; (2) Cadet Amelia's involvement in locating the large quantity of opioids that Gamache unintentionally allowed an unknown criminal to get away with after the shootout with the cartels; snd (3) the embezzlement of hundreds of millions of dollars by an investment broker who is murdered. A solid read that left me feeling a bit disappointed - l expected more.

Very enjoyable listen. My first book of Louise Penny. I enjoyed all the different characters and the twists and turns of the story. I look forward to reading more of her books.

As with all Louise Penny books, you are at once cozy by the fire and riveted by the existential quandaries that are faced by our favorite characters, Armand Gamache, Jean Guy Beauvoir and the rest!! When I have to drive a dreary hour and a half commute to work I love to escape to Montreal and three pines and be with this wonderful cast of characters figuring out life and murder.

Getting a new Louise Penny book is like buying a pair of identical slippers when the old ones have worn out. New but comfortably predictable.
Interesting plot lines could have been given a little more life blood, rather dull exposition that disappointed after an interesting start. As usual the food descriptions were wonderful as were the descriptions of the Three Pines residents winter hardware. While fully accepting the physicality of elder people, and admiring Armand’s relationship with his wife , I felt that there was an uncomfortable revival of Ruth’s femininity. Please let’s not go down that route! Let’s keep her drunk, brilliant and demented. Not alluring.

Brilliant. Every time you think you’ve figured it out, another twist arrives.
