About this audiobook
“The universe began as an enormous breath being held.”
From the acclaimed author of Stories of Your Life and Others — the basis for the Academy Award-nominated film Arrival — comes a groundbreaking new collection of short fiction: nine stunningly original, provocative, and poignant stories. These are tales that tackle some of humanity’s oldest questions along with new quandaries only Ted Chiang could imagine.
In “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate", a portal through time forces a fabric seller in ancient Baghdad to grapple with past mistakes and second chances. In “Exhalation”, an alien scientist makes a shocking discovery with ramifications that are literally universal. In “Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom”, the ability to glimpse into alternate universes necessitates a radically new examination of the concepts of choice and free will.
Including stories being published for the first time as well as some of his rare and classic uncollected work, Exhalation is Ted Chiang at his best: profound, sympathetic — revelatory.

Sci-fi wonderment meets luminous prose in Ted Chiang’s short story collection. Chiang is genius at conveying how magical science can be — and you don’t have to be a science whiz to be entranced. From his time-travel take on the “Arabian Nights” to a mechanical nanny, these stories will stick with you, make you think, and leave you in awe.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very enjoyable. A nice spin on a life with running.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely wonderful. I wish there were more of his stuff. Very nuanced and original and well written and meaningful interpretations at the end of each story. Riveting.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I am endlessly fascinated by the mind of this author. He gravitates toward complex ideas and finds the humanity in them. I am impressed if an author can do this once, or twice, or maybe even three times. But Ted Chiang has done this so many times in his career. "Exhalation" is no exception. The stories are highly imaginative and their scientific and philosophical foundational concepts are awe-inspiring. I highly recommend this body of work. I also enjoyed Chiang's notes about each story.
