About this audiobook
Life is a lucrative business, as long as you play by the rules.
Nestled in New York’s Hudson Valley is a luxury retreat boasting every amenity: organic meals, personal fitness trainers, daily massages — and all of it for free. In fact, you’re paid big money to stay here — more than you’ve ever dreamed of. The catch? For nine months, you cannot leave the grounds, your movements are monitored, and you are cut off from your former life while you dedicate yourself to the task of producing the perfect baby. For someone else.
Jane, an immigrant from the Philippines, is in desperate search of a better future when she commits to being a “Host” at Golden Oaks — or the Farm, as residents call it. But now pregnant, fragile, consumed with worry for her family, Jane is determined to reconnect with her life outside. Yet she cannot leave the Farm or she will lose the life-changing fee she’ll receive on the delivery of her child.
Gripping, provocative, heartbreaking, The Farm pushes to the extremes our thinking on motherhood, money, and merit and raises crucial questions about the trade-offs women will make to fortify their futures and the futures of those they love.
Editor's Note
Alarmingly real…
Can women have it all? Joanne Ramos’ debut novel puts an alarmingly real dystopian twist on the question, as women looking for better lives bear children for women who have all the material riches they need. Emma Roberts selected this as her May 2019 pick for the Belletrist book club.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Anticlimactic. Well written, class-varying perspectives, nicely paced plot development, completely wasted potential.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The pages flew by and each one brought me further into the story. The plight of the American dream is in danger, reading about the struggles each character had to make their lives better only saddens me for the obstacles in the way of people failing to find safe passage into the country to make their lives and the lives of their children better. Well done!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was a little slow starting but was a great story once we “got to the farm”
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fascinating ideas and easy listen. Really enjoyed this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well constructed story with artful moments of tension. Convincingly read
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a riveting read; the author does a fantastic job at depicting the moral gray areas wherein antagonists’ motivations are just as easily understood as protagonists’, and heroes as well as villains make mistakes and bad choices. Every character had really unique circumstances and motivations, and it’s a joy to get to know the different characters and see their interplay.
I was disappointed by the quality of the recording, however; it was so quiet and lo-fi that I struggled to hear it even with my volume turned all the way up. The reader’s performance was a little flat to me as well - but i found it wasn’t so bad I couldn’t get used to it as I kept listening. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5i did enjoy this peek inside a completely different world. the story was interesting but the narrator not so much.
