About this audiobook

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.

She can’t ignore a cry for help. But in this remote hunting town, it’s open season.

Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.

But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead—her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.

But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide…

Much of this book is missing. The last 2 chapters are missing. How does it end? Lots of gaps throughout the book.

WOLFHUNTER RIVER was an appalling and pulse-pounding thriller. Gwen Proctor managed to escape from her serial killer husband Melvin Royal. She is trying to make a new, safe life for her kids Lanny and Connor, but she has been convicted of being his accomplice by the court of public opinion. She faces daily harassment from online bullies of all descriptions. Her main nemesis is Miranda Nelson Tidewell. She is wealthy and obsessed with the idea that Gwen was involved in the death of her daughter. She is using her money currently to fund a documentary which will bring everything back to public awareness and encourage a new round of hateful fanatics. Gwen's boyfriend Sam was once a supporter of Miranda and her agenda. They joined forces when Sam's sister was identified as one of Melvin's victims. However, getting to know Gwen has enabled him to realize how wrong he was about her. He hasn't confessed his role in Gwen's harassment though.Gwen has been getting something of an underground reputation for being able to help other women in her sort of situation. When she gets a call from a woman in Wolfhunter River, she thinks this is another one of those calls. But the woman is too frightened to tell her what is going on. The next time the phone rings from that number, it is the woman's fifteen-year-old daughter Vee who says she's standing over her mother's dead body and that she is afraid that "they" will be coming for her next. Needing to get away from Stillhouse Lake while the documentary is being filmed there, Gwen, Sam, Lanny and Connor head to Wolfhouse River to see if they can help Vera. They find a town steeped in secrets. Young women are missing, the police are obviously corrupt, and assorted other villains are gathering there. And in the background is the possibility that six-year-old kidnapping victim Ellie White might be somewhere in the area. The tension and suspense seemed to build with every turn of the page. I loved that the viewpoint shifted from Gwen, to Sam, to Lanny, and to Connor. I loved that there was no complete resolution to Gwen's problems. She'll always be under suspicion from some people regarding whether or not she had a part in Melvin Royal's killing spree. She and Sam have a lot of trust to rebuild after she learns of his involvement with Miranda's hate campaign against her. I do like the strong family that they are building though.

    In continuation

The third book of the Stillhouse Lake series takes a shift and has Gwen involved in another case due to her notoriety.

It wasn’t as heart pounding as the first two books, but I do enjoy all the characters and can’t wait to see where it goes next.

    I loved the writing
I loved the adult characters (Gwen, Sam, Lustic, Javier&Kez) , thankfully only got one chapter of Lanny and Connor cause they’re equally annoying the readers did a great job reading no issue there but there chapters were eyerolls for me.

I think this book should’ve been put in between stillhouse lake and Killman creek instead of being part 3
    Spoilers

It makes no sense that Gwen who is careful about who she trust and doesn’t let anyone in goes on this crusade to prove Vi Crocketts innocence…. If you put this book in between stillhouse lake and killman creek and keep Melvin alive, throughout this story she could’ve wrote it as an in between sideline story where she gets thrusted into the situation because Melvin is kidnapping girls and the town gives her a bad vibe. Keeping it as constructed though this book feels low stakes to me and tries to amp it up because Gwen Proctor is involved sniffing around for clues and putting her kids in dangerous situations which she said she never wants to do. Killing Melvin in Book 2 made Book 3 here seem so unnecessary. Yeah they talk about the documentary going against her but it’s barely referred to really maybe a handful of times I would’ve loved a deep dive into the lost angels and then retaliating against Gwen publicly and how she handles that. You answer a phone call from a random woman, Then she ends up dead, her daughter calls claiming innocence and she said to seek you out and you decide yup I have to solve this . The introduction gave us insight there’s a child who’s abducted, she’s mentioned like 3 times in the book very non essential to the story, she’s more as a background prop to make the story and town seem more vicious but in all honesty seems useless. They mentioned women missing, yeah that’s non essential until they randomly find them they mention it like 3 times. Should’ve stuck to one premise and went fully into it cause the first 2 books are great gritty and Gwen is determined to get shit done here it’s just a scattershot of premise mentioned hoping they’ll intrigue the story since big bad guy Melvin is already dead .

I wasn’t sure how good book three would be since Melvin is dead, but this book exceeded my expectations. It was just as good as the last book, lots of investigation and action. You get to see the aftermath of Melvin and watch the family go though more trauma m.

I got hooked on this whole series. I enjoyed the mystery and investigative parts of the story. Gwen can be a bit much sometimes but I like her calmer partner Sam. I think what really keeps me hooked is the hope that this family will finally get some peace.

I wish I could give a more accurate review. The basic story itself is great and I would give a 5 but in all of the books, I have found Gwen completely unlikeable. It's made it increasingly difficult to get through the books and I wish I could give her and her personality a 1 or 2.

A young girl is kidnapped, 3 young women go missing. A phone call for help from a woman in Wolfhunter River. A new documentary to discredit Gwen Proctor. All of this begins the novel, the latest in the series about Gwen and her infamous ex-husband, serial killer Melvin Royal. Now Gwen is pulled into helping the woman who called her begging for help. What unfolds is a horrifying story of a town, evil to its core.Gwen must come to terms with Sam and his past, knowing who to trust and who to question, while fiercely protecting her children.I liked the dark and scary theme of this book. I thought the plot was good, but I did think it was a bit unrealistic how the shooting and imprisonments scenes played out. However, I will continue with the series to find out what comes next for this family. #WolfhunterRiver #RachelCaine

This really didn’t pick up until about 60% into it, and if it had been any other author, I would’ve abandoned it. It’s nuts how this entire story weaves together, but it somehow makes sense in the end.

This series is really the type that makes you sit up and take notice. These things could be happening right next door and we would never know. Classic Serial Killer stuff. I didn't think there was anywhere to go after book 2 but this book shows us just how much characters can grow if you feed them. My mind is whirling with where the next steps will lead us. Very interesting!

Gwen Proctor has been surviving for a long time now. So have her kids, Lanny and Connor. With Melvin Royal dead, they're finally starting to rebuild some sort of life for themselves with Sam Cade. Until, all at once, specters from both Gwen and Sam's pasts return. A terrifying phone call asking for Gwen's help begins an ordeal that could destroy the family they've formed. This series is tense and well-plotted and the mysteries in this third book are no different. But it's the characterization and the deep understanding Rachel Caine brings to the characters and their circumstances that are the true stars. This is a truly amazing series. I have a bad heart and at times during these first three books, I was a bit worried that I might end up in the hospital due to excitement and anxiety! Granted with the first book you really need to understand that the author takes a lot of artistic licenses and makes the literally impossible into the fictionally possible. But I have no problem with using my imagination! That's what fiction is for -to make us imagine ourselves in these situations and how we would react, to get us away from our everyday lives and problems, to entertain, amuse or horrify -and this series does it in spades. In the last book, Gwen and her family and lover have finally gotten rid of her serial killer husband Melvin and thank goodness for that! But due to something that Sam has done, in this book, Gwen and crew decide to go help someone who calls out for help and ends up in dire straights. Sam has to confess that he has done something horrible and from there we have this next installment. This book does end up on a different note and I find it a good one as it sets up a different sort of story for the upcoming book/s. I don't believe that Gwen and her kids have gotten rid of the trolls and stalkers, but the author is giving us something fresh. If I had one complaint about this book is that it does too much re-hashing, but that does allow for someone to start in on this series anywhere and get caught up -tho I do not recommend that you do so. *ARC supplied by the publisher though I did pre-order my own copy!
