About this audiobook

A chilling ghost story with a twist: The New York Times best-selling author of The Winter People returns to the woods of Vermont to tell the story of a husband and wife who don't simply move into a haunted house — they build one....

In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on 44 acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams.

When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago. With her passion for artifacts, Helen finds special materials to incorporate into the house — a beam from an old schoolroom, bricks from a mill, a mantel from a farmhouse - objects that draw her deeper into the story of Hattie and her descendants, three generations of Breckenridge women, each of whom died suspiciously.

As the building project progresses, the house will become a place of menace and unfinished business: a new home, now haunted, that beckons its owners and their neighbors toward unimaginable danger.

A great story with tales of Witches and their ghosts! A very easy and fun read, especially for October.

It's spooky but not scary. I feel it would be great as a movie too!

Definitely a thumbs up from me!

Great story with very likable characters. I didn’t want to put it down. Some supernatural, a lot of mystery and intrigue. I will be looking for more books by this author. The narrator did a great job

My kind of ghost story. Thoughtful, interesting, with some creepy parts mixed in.

I found this story more eerie and sad than spooky. City people moving to semi-secluded land to build their dream house was unintentionally hilarious. I shouldn't laugh at them startling at every noise, unexpected movement or critter that crawled under their house but as someone who grew up in a National Park it gave me a good giggle. I suppose hearing chewing and scratching noises from under the floor could be disconcerting if you didn't know what it might be. My first thought would not be "ghost lady" but that's just me.

With how jumpy and Helen is over nothing you would think that she would refrain from filling her house with haunted objects and attempting to call spirits. Seriously lady, you're afraid of a porcupine but not the ghosts of angry, murdered women? Despite my periodic incredulity I did mostly enjoy the story. It was fairly predictable but still entertaining and in the end it wasn't a bad read.

The narration was very good. I did find it a bit slow and sped up the playback just a touch but I think audio was a good choice for this story.
