About this audiobook

“Quickly and assuredly, Jewell builds an ecosystem of countervailing suspicions…Tricky, clever, unexpected.” —New York Times Book Review

“Brace yourself as Jewell stacks up the secrets, then lights a long, slow fuse.” —People

“A seize-you-by-the-throat thriller and a genuinely moving family drama.” —A.J. Finn, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window

The instant New York Times and #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of the Then She Was Gone delivers another suspenseful page-turner about a shocking murder in a picturesque and well-to-do English town, perfect “for fans of Gone Girl, The Girl on the Train, and Luckiest Girl Alive” (Library Journal).

Melville Heights is one of the nicest neighborhoods in Bristol, England; home to doctors and lawyers and old-money academics. It’s not the sort of place where people are brutally murdered in their own kitchens. But it is the sort of place where everyone has a secret. And everyone is watching you.

As the headmaster credited with turning around the local school, Tom Fitzwilliam is beloved by one and all—including Joey Mullen, his new neighbor, who quickly develops an intense infatuation with this thoroughly charming yet unavailable man. Joey thinks her crush is a secret, but Tom’s teenaged son Freddie—a prodigy with aspirations of becoming a spy for MI5—excels in observing people and has witnessed Joey behaving strangely around his father.

One of Tom’s students, Jenna Tripp, also lives on the same street, and she’s not convinced her teacher is as squeaky clean as he seems. For one thing, he has taken a particular liking to her best friend and fellow classmate, and Jenna’s mother—whose mental health has admittedly been deteriorating in recent years—is convinced that Mr. Fitzwilliam is stalking her.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier, a schoolgirl writes in her diary, charting her doomed obsession with a handsome young English teacher named Mr. Fitzwilliam…

In Lisa Jewell’s latest brilliant “bone-chilling suspense” (People) no one is who they seem—and everyone is hiding something. Who has been murdered—and who would have wanted one of their neighbors dead? As “Jewell teases out her twisty plot at just the right pace” (Booklist, starred review), you will be kept guessing until the startling revelation on the very last page.

Slow going and the storyline seems to stall and become weighed down with the various character. It’s a so-so read.

Slow start getting all the characters down, but became one I looked forward to hearing. Quite humorous to hear an older woman speak in teenage Snapchat lingo. Most of all impressed with the main twist!

I absolutely LOVED this book!! I very rarely give thrillers 5 stars and I was thinking I was tired of thrillers, because lately so many of them felt predictable, but this was just WOW!! Incredibly well developed characters, super tight plot, excellent pacing and an unforgettable ending!! I recommend this book!

This book left me engaged, and I didn’t want to stop listening. I also liked the British feel, with words that are not used in American English. Plenty of clues that left me wondering about the killer, until the last few chapters. Then the epilogue was a satisfying closure.

Fantastic. From the first I was intrigued by this twist on a whodunnit of not knowing whom was killed as well as who the killer was. This book though is much much more, with a tight plot and amazing character portraiture I was interested all through, not just waiting to see how it would end.

I devoured this novel! It reminds me of Big Little Lies in that it starts with a crime, then goes back to fill in they gaps leading up to it. I felt like I had it all figured out pretty early on, but was way off.

Great writing! Although I had things mostly figured out, I looked forward to getting to it each day and it kept me invested. Feels like a good soap opera! Not in a Cheesy way though. It gives complete closure and has a nice little twist left at the end.

This story is told through the eyes of three different characters. This makes it a bit harder to follow and keep your interest, but overall the story keeps you intrigued. The ending is good, but I felt no satisfaction over the murder mystery.

I had a hard time getting into it to start. Had to re-listen to the first section a couple times as my mind would wander. I enjoyed it a lot once I finally could get into the story. Not nearly as captivating as other books by this author, but still overall worth the listen.

This book started off slow but it took time to build the characters and make us connect with parts of the characters. It actually felt like being part of the story. I could see the neighborhood and the characters , could feel the emotions. It was an excellently story where there was so many twists and turns and nothing is quite as it seems. Lots of Red Herrings! I will definitely read more from this author

An interesting read but I felt myself hating most of the characters and their actions. It seemed to glorify stalking and cheating and I didn’t love that. I think the changing between the different perspectives confused me at times and I didn’t find the ending all that satisfying. Overall a good read though

This is now the 3rd "thriller" novel from Lisa that I have read or listened to. I really enjoyed this. The character building and different points of view were entertaining. I love how it was written and everything came together at the end. Another novel that would make a great movie.

I mainly read this but listened to the audio book a bit as well.

Not gonna lie the first 20 chapters had me sooo confused. I wonder if it was because I was listening. My sister explained it to me, who was physically reading the book. Once I understood who all the characters were, it was so good. I finished the book in a day and a half. I couldn’t stop listening.
