About this audiobook

Alberich had spent most of his youth in the Karsite military schools training to be an officer. As the son of an impoverished mother, he had no other career choice open to him. And Alberich had risen in the ranks with almost unnatural speed. He developed expertise with many weapons and excelled in academic subjects with an ease that was the envy of his classmates. But in fact, the reclusive Alberich studied long and hard, pushing himself ruthlessly.

In battle, Alberich had always had a sort of "sixth sense" about things which were about to happen-when and from where the enemy would attack. Instinctively, he has this ability, for the Sunpriests kept careful watch for anyone exhibiting "demon powers" which were the hallmark of Karse's greatest enemy-the witch-nation of Valdemar. Those they caught were "cleansed" in the fires of Vkandis Sunlord.

Both Alberich's skill and secret served him well in the army of Karse, and when Alberich became one of Karse's youngest captains, he received a special gift-a powerful white stallion "liberated" from the enemy. But this honor was merely a distraction, for the Sunpriests had laid a trap which even Alberich's strange foresight could not predict . . .

This book is the first in the duology about Herald Alberich the weapons master during the Arrows of the Queen trilogy. He's originally from Karse the "archenemies" of Valdemar and this book tells the story of how he came to be a herald and a part of the collegium. I loved the book, I was always fascinated by this gruff, slightly standoffish herald. Someone who is technically the exact opposite of what you think a herald would be. I suggest reading this after you finish after the Arrows of the Queen trilogy, as well as the Mage Winds and Mage Wars trilogies. I also suggest reading Skif's book "Take a Thief".

Another piece in the history of Valdemar. Misty Lackey maintains good continuity.

I absolutely love the Herald's of Valdemar Series. This is Book 1 of Albrech's Story. You can also start the series here. The book covers what Champions are and explains a lot about the war with Karse. This series is basically set before Midevil times. Has a little magic and a lot of fantasy. I would compare it to Dragonriders of Pern but with horses not dragons.

I read this in hardcover years ago, and much prefer as an audio because of the way Alberich's accent is handled. Selenay's voice is a little funny, but overall I enjoyed the narrator and the voices he used.

Valdemar books are always a comfort read for me, and this was great to have on in the background. For fans of Valdemar, it has great world building info that you don't get in other books and has some hints at future events.
