About this audiobook

Charley is a cleaner by day and a professional gambler by night. She might be haunted by her tragic past but she's never thought of herself as anything or anyone special. Until, that is, things start to go terribly wrong all across the city of Manchester. Between plagues of rats, firestorms, and the gleaming blue eyes of a sexy Scottish werewolf, she might just have landed herself in the middle of a magical apocalypse. She might also be the only person who has the ability to bring order to an utterly chaotic new world.

It was an easy read, and the authors writing style is fine. For that reason alone I will give her three stars.
If she continues to mature as an author and as long as she doesn’t continue to write her heroines in the same way nor bad guys as being so one dimensional, I might be willing to read a different series of hers.
I cannot stand this heroin nor the premise of society that was set up so I will not continue this series. The main character is naïve and stupid. She keeps telling us how she is this poker player who can read people, but if you’re a poker player you understand strategy and people’s characters. This heroine did not as proven by her thinking, planning, and beliefs that all people are inherently good, they just need the chance to be good.
***SPOILER*** at the end they publicly humiliate the bad guy, what is this high school? That would never have stopped him, nor any of his minions who I can guarantee would’ve been bad people. As soon as they took out the big bad boss guy there would have been many of his minions who would be waiting in the wings to fill the void. And the bad guy would never have been that easy to defeat if he was that high up in a crime circle. You don’t raise through the ranks in crime circles by being stupid. They wrote him as if he had no ability to strategize whatsoever. He never would’ve been able to create an organization that quickly with that many followers if he was that week. The fact that the author wrote an ending where the bad guys could be scared and coward into submission makes me wonder the authors understanding of society as a whole. the idea that people just needed to have Big Bad Guy removed and the heroine to tell them to be good and then they all will suddenly live in this weird utopian society is ridiculous.

Shrill Disk by Helen Harper and narrated by Ruth Urquhart is a story about magic and how magic and a magical object helped take over a city! The magic transformed people into all types of creatures! There are plenty of side stories going on too. This is the story of Charlie as she is right in the middle of this magical mayhem! Great magical fun and disasters!Narration was excellent!

Charley is a professional gambler and cleaner living in Manchester, England. She has promised to pay off the gambling debts that a friend owes to a gangster. While she is cleaning the local police precinct, she has an unusual encounter with a woman. Not soon after that, strange things begin happening all over Manchester. Vermin invasion, raining fire, a surge in plant growth and a locust infestation manifest into a war between supernaturals. The government decides to evacuate the city but not everyone goes. Everything in Charley's life has changed, including herself, and she must try to adapt to the new world. Her need to help others sometimes gets her into trouble but luckily she has gathered a group of friends and supernaturals that have become her family and they work together to survive this new world. When I first started reading this, I thought the story line was a little silly. I liked it but it could use a little more fleshing out. The dialogue and the character development could use some polish to make the relationships between the characters a little more believable. I did like the story but I think it could use some more touching up. Thank you to the NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
