About this audiobook
Lush and visual, chock-full of delicious recipes, Roselle Lim’s magical debut novel is about food, heritage, and finding family in the most unexpected places.
At the news of her mother’s death, Natalie Tan returns home. The two women hadn’t spoken since Natalie left in anger seven years ago, when her mother refused to support her chosen career as a chef. Natalie is shocked to discover the vibrant neighborhood of San Francisco’s Chinatown that she remembers from her childhood is fading, with businesses failing and families moving out. She’s even more surprised to learn she has inherited her grandmother’s restaurant.
The neighborhood seer reads the restaurant’s fortune in the leaves: Natalie must cook three recipes from her grandmother’s cookbook to aid her struggling neighbors before the restaurant will succeed. Unfortunately, Natalie has no desire to help them try to turn things around — she resents the local shopkeepers for leaving her alone to take care of her agoraphobic mother when she was growing up. But with the support of a surprising new friend and a budding romance, Natalie starts to realize that maybe her neighbors really have been there for her all along.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is full of love. Love for food, family, culture, friends and the community.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I’ve always believed that food is magic and for Natalie it really is magic. She serves up recipes to her neighbours to induce a desired effect; courage, tolerance, happiness. Of course with magic something always goes wrong and it is quite spectacular! The characters feel like real people with authentic dialogue and distinct personalities. I loved all the quirky, eccentric neighbours and their problems. Natalie has a real character arc and becomes much more likable as the story progresses. Community, friendship, family, and food are the prevalent themes. There are even recipes included which is great because the descriptions of various dishes made me want to eat them as soon as possible. Natalie Tan’s book of Luck and Fortune left a smile on my face and a hunger in my belly. It was a delightful, feel good story with a happy ending and a magical cat. What more could I possibly want?
The narration was quite good, although I did up the speed just a touch. I enjoyed hearing the pronunciations of all the words and names because seeing them in print I would have mangled them! I was a little strange to have recipes read out loud but they are fairly simple and not too bogged down by measurements so the recitation wasn’t unpleasant. I picked up a paper copy of the book after I was finished the audio because I wanted the recipes.
