When he and his K-9 partner, an Australian shepherd named Jackeroo, rescue the fiery detective from trouble, the sparks begin to fly. Jori Garrison trains dogs for wounded Veterans. She learned how when she was in prison. She was convicted of drug pushing via circumstantial evidence. Her cheating ex-fiance had set her up before dying in a car accident. Now, she is training dogs and trying to rebuild her life. Lauray Batisse was a military policeman whose K-9 companion died at the same time Law was hurt by an IED. Law lost his left leg and had other injuries. He's trying to get back to his job as an Arkansas State Trooper but PTSD has made him a candidate for a service dog. Samantha is the dog. She is a mix of golden retriever and poodle, has a rusted-red coat, coal-black nose, floppy ears, and an enormous curling tail. Law notes that it looks like a cheese doodle. He is very reluctant to take her as his service dog partly out of loyalty to his K-9 Scud and partly out of his feeling that he ought to be able to deal with his PTSD without her. When Law and Jori meet they are attracted to each other but Law makes it clear that it can only be a one-night stand. He was raised to believe that he couldn't do relationships. But it seems like Law and Jori kept getting pushed together. Jori has to go to him to give him and Samantha some more training. Also an investigation that Law is during intersects with Jori's court case. Law agrees to help Jori find out the truth about how she came to be convicted. The story has a lot of action and some sizzling romantic scenes as Jori and Law learn to take a chance on each other. This was an excellent romantic suspense novel. I really enjoyed the chapters that Samantha narrated about her alpha too.

A pretty good story. Macaulay is a pet detective, she rescues lost animals. And Oliver works for a search and rescue unit and has a faithful K-9 partner Jackeroo. The first time Mac meet's Oliver she mistakes him for a stripper, he so "hot", and he thinks she was dumpster diving for food, it was quite funny. The story progresses into more serious matters however when Macayla is accused of petnapping her for money, and the thrills and intrigue are abound. I found the story a little choppy at times and the suspense rating was very low. I did enjoy the book but would have liked a more intense storyline.

I had a lot of fun with this book! I have had a review copy of this book for a long time but somehow I always seemed to skip over it when it was time to pick up a new book. I really have no idea why it fell off my radar. I love romantic suspense even though I don't read a ton of it anymore. I also love books that have dogs worked into the story and animals play a huge part in this tale. I am so glad that I finally decided to give this book a try.I really liked Macayla. I can't remember ever reading a book that featured a pet detective before but I loved that aspect of the story. Mac finds lost pets and seems to have a real knack for it. She is really great with animals and works hard to rescue them when they are lost and scared. She's made a few enemies by standing up for local animals but it is worth it in her eyes. Mac meets Oliver while she is trying to coax a scared dog out from behind a dumpster. Oliver handles a K-9 Search and Rescue dog and is one of the owners of a company specializing in the task. He can't help but go to help the lady he sees hanging out by the dumpsters. Before a lot of time elapses, he jumps in to save the day and is pulled into the events happening in Mac's life. I really liked Mac and Oliver together. I thought that they had great chemistry and were both very competent individuals. I liked that they were both able to help each other and they were both very willing to do so. Their relationship moved quickly but I thought that it felt realistic. I would recommend this book to others. I thought that it was a really well done romantic suspense with great characters that both had intriguing backstories and a healthy enough dose of doggie antics to keep the animal lover in me happy. This book is the sixth book in the K-9 Rescue series but I had no issues reading it as a stand-alone although now I really want to go back and read some of the earlier books from this series.I received a digital review copy of this book from St. Martin's Press via NetGalley.

As several reviewers have mentioned, the K-9 Rescue books are "romantic suspense light" with more emphasis on the romance elements that the suspense. Nevertheless, the characters are engaging and the story is well-written and satisfying.

In terms of the romance, Jori and Law's chemistry is combustible and their interactions, both verbal and physical, are entertaining. Jori is very personable with a sweet nature, but she never comes across as weak-willed or spinless. Despite falling prey to a selfish ex, she has overcome adversity and made something of herself.

Law is just as appealing. although some readers may find his demeanor cold and callous, his apparent aloofness conceals immense suffering and a strong desire to love and be loved. Jori is his perfect match as she sees beyond his physical and emotional scars to lonely man beneath.

As previously mentioned, the suspense plot is virtually non-existent. While there is definite potential for an intense crime drama, this fails to materialize and it is all resolved fairly easily and quickly.

The animals in the story, Samantha the Goldendoodle service dog, and Argyle the kitten, are exceedingly cute and add some much needed comic relief to the angst surrounding both Jori and Law's traumatic experiences. That said, the inclusion of several scenes from the pets' point of view is silly and unnecessary.

Overall, an entertaining read and I look forward to continuing with the series.

Tori is an ex-con who served her time, even though she didn’t rightfully belong there to begin with. Now she’s trying to rehabilitate her life by training service dogs. As part of her job she gets involved with a military police veteran, Law, who was wounded in Afghanistan. He doesn’t think he needs a service dog and rebels at having one in his life. It’s Jori’s job to make sure that dog, Samantha, stays there. When she’s instantly attracted to Law she tries not to get involved, but as events evolve, they both seem to be in deeper than they realize…and they’re not liking it at all.In my opinion, D. D. Ayres makes a story worth reading! Primal Force is detailed, without you even realizing it. You get a complete story at the same time you’re glued to each and every page as the story unfolds. The characters rebel against any type of relationship which makes it more interesting, as they interact with chips on their shoulders and a desire that won’t quit. It’s great to see how the characters soften toward each other as circumstances break apart and show their strengths and weaknesses. The rebellion presents itself in many ways, often in a sexual manner. The hero and heroine each protect the other and emotions run high throughout the story. I love this A K-9 Rescue Series and D. D. Ayres is one of my new favorite authors. Each book is filled with suspense, excitement, and sexual tension. This is edge-of-your-seat reading at it’s finest! 5 Stars!

My goodness, I fell pretty hard for Law! There's just something about a wounded warrior that just grabs hold and won't let go, especially when he thinks he's better off alone. Thankfully, Jori and Sam saw through his walls and got the results that were needed. Now I'm looking forward to reading Yardley's story. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

Wonderful! I absolutely loved this book! Two wounded souls doing their best to create a new life after having their old ones destroyed find themselves brought together through Samantha, Golden Doodle extraordinaire, a service dog trained to become the partner of a wounded military veteran. Lauray “Law” Battisse has lost a leg, developed PTSD and is fighting demons not only related to his war experiences. Jordan “Jori” Garrison is an ex-con hired by Warriors Wolf Pack to help train dogs like Samantha. There is immediate attraction between Law and Jori and no promises are made by either when they get together for a steamy afternoon together. What did I love about this novel? •The insight into the characters – whether one, two or four legged•The relationship of Jori and Law as it develops•The interaction between Law and Samantha as it develops•The inherent goodness and strength of character exhibited by Jori, Law and Samantha•Being able to dislike the bad guys and hope for their eventual downfall•The hints into what it might be like for some of the returning injured vets and their families•The quality of writing that made me smile, feel and care•Wanting to know what happens to Yardley – hoping she will get a book of her own. •And, so much more!Thank you to NetGalley and Saint Martin’s Press for the copy of this book to read and review.
