Sable Grace

Sable Grace is the writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone,long-time critique partners and friends who came together by fluke to discover their voices fit quite nicely during a writing experiment. The story became far too interesting to put down and Sable Grace was born. Both Heather and Laura reside in Florida, are happily married to their real-life heroes, and are, well, complete opposites. Still, there’s enough common ground for them to weave their words together in the voice of Sable Grace.

Kyana is tough but vulnerable. She is the best of all the tracers. She suffers from motion sickness and she doesn't let many into her inner circle. Her grudge with Ryker is a result of the Vampyre and Lychen traits warring within her. Vampyres are known for their promiscuity while Lychens are monogamous. Her life as a human was not the best so she's created her own family in Haven (her roommate and witch) and Geoffrey (a vampyre and fellow tracer). I only have one complaint - multiple muddled points of view in some of the chapters. I did read an ARC of the book so the instances of head hopping may have been edited out by the time the book reached the printers. The world building is phenomenal. It mixes Gods and Goddesses with the present day to help save everyone from the hell demons.Ascension was a fast read because of the twists that kept being thrown at Kyana. The ending was jaw dropping and satisfying. Everything in the story led up to it. Kyana's character goes through a believable transformation from start to finish. The next book, Bedeviled, should be released in January 2012.

So I did make it to the end, but only because I skipped large chunks in the middle. This may explain why it seemed way more like urban fantasy than like paranormal romance to me... and urban fantasy of the lover's triangle sort, which is not my favorite. If you're looking for a book with a HEA, this isn't it.The charactersDo you remember that part of Buffy where Faith was all psycho rage-girl? That's Kyana, the heroine of this series. I know some people like PNR heroines like that, but I tend to find them less heroic and more to be pitied; a boyfriend is not a substitute for psychiatric help. And I don't mean that in a snarky way. Kyana has a lot of issues and seems to respond to all of them with thoughtless rage and violence. That's no foundation for a life, much less a relationship.Ryker seems to be the fated-mate hero and Geoffrey is the bad boy/best friend hero. I think Ryker is supposed to be the one Kyana ends up with, but given that he mostly postures and snarls, as a romantic hero I didn't find him that impressive, but like I said... I skipped some parts in the middle. The world-buildingThis part was the most interesting to me. The use of Greek mythology, vampires and Lychen (which makes me giggle, because I keep reading it lichen) was entertaining and seemed much more thought-out than the characters. The plotStandard urban fantasy, save the world stuff.Overall, the world-building and story were interesting enough that I'll check reviews for later books in the series. I'd be hesitant to pick them up, but there's enough potential here that I might like later installments better than I liked this one. This review was based on an electronic ARC received via NetGalley.

Kylana is a great new urban fantasy heroine. Half-vampyre, half-lyken she is the last of her kind. She is a tracker for the Order and has been set by the goddess Artemis to find the missing key to Tartarus to stop the Dark Breeds from invading Earth and paving the way for the return of Chronos. First in a new series.

The gates of hell have been opened, unleashing evil on humanity and the Gods of Olympus are powerless to stop them. Their powers are fading and their replacements are being systematically murdered, and all will soon be lost unless Kyana, and tracer's like her, can find the Chosen, and close the gates of hell. After a slow start, as Sable Grace establishes a multi level world crowded with Greek gods, witches, vampires, lycans, demons and more, the pace begins to accelerate and I was drawn into this well crafted story that blends dark urban fantasy with romance. With plenty of action, angst and romance the plot is complex yet uncomplicated. Kyana, a half breed, and one of the best tracer's for the Order of the Ancients, is charged with finding the key to Hell. Kyanna is all defiant attitude and kick ass ability which is admirable, but not immediately likeable, until the details of her tragic background emerge. The knowledge exposes her vulnerabilities and gives her motivations necessary context. Ryker, the son of Ares, is tasked to keep Kyana, who has a tendency to act first and think later, in line. Having previously tangled, Kyana is furious at being saddled with Ryker but the antagonism between the two hides a mutual attraction. I enjoyed the banter between the two, and found the development of their relationship satisfying, even though it is ultimately incomplete. The two form a good partnership, and Ryker has that appealing mix of Alpha ability and romantic sensitivity. The supporting characters include Geoff and Haven, both who have pivotal roles at the climax of the story.Ascension is a strong start to the Dark Breed series, it's approach is interesting and it provides an opportunity for it to grow in several directions. Urban fantasy fans will likely enjoy this exciting addition to the genre.

Kyana is the best at what she does, tracking. Her unique blood, Vamp and Lychen, allows her to hold a scent longer than any of the other trackers and she uses it to her advantage. The Fates have an assignment they have determined Kyana is perfect for—saving the human world. Someone has opened the door to Tartarus, the Chosen are being killed along with all the other people and there is a trail that needs followed. The only catch is, Ryker. He is a demigod, Aries’ son and his ‘snub’ ten years before still stings.Ryker knows he and Kyana are meant for each other, but because of her mixed blood, he doesn’t believe she can mate for life. Her ease with fellow Vamp, Geoff makes Ryker jealous as does the attention she shows any male. Geoff is a necessary evil as far as Ryker is concerned. He is better connected than either he or Kyana so to accomplish their goal, they need him.Fighting Dark Breeds, searching for dead gods, trying to keep her focus off Ryker’s sexiness and meeting a soulless race she never knew existed are just a few of Kyana’s adventures. Her personal life keeps interfering, she can’t keep Ryker off her mind, her best friend, Haven potentially getting married is nerve-wracking and she has more questions than answers. Kyana is literally in a race against time to save the world, her friends and herself before Tartarus destroys it all! A wonderfully thrilling, fast-paced story! It will sink its teeth into you and not let go!Reviewed by Ashley Wintters for Suspense Magazine

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: The gates to Hades had been opened, Kyana and Ryker must find the key to save the world.Opening Sentence: Despite the chaos of the world around her, she couldn’t help but hum Queen’s “We Are the Champions” in her head. The Review:A debut author’s work can some times be a challenge. The lack of clarity in the author’s spoken voice can become cloudy or even worse a grammatical nightmare. To add to the recipe that is Sable Grace is the fact that this “author” is in fact a writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone. I’m absolutely delighted that not only does this book have drama, passion, great story telling but a wonderful sense of playfulness that grabs you about the heroine, Kyana. The opening sentence says it all. How can anyone not love a character that can hear Queen’s We Are The Champions, I know I can’t.The complexity of the world that you are thrown into is astounding. There is a world being waged against all humanity because the gates of Hades have been opened and all the demonic minions have been set loose. Kyana is a part Vampire and part Lichen and her job is to track down “The Chosen” which are replacements for the gods. Kyana has been sent to track down these important humans before they are murdered. When we first meet Kyana she has discovered one of “The Chosen” and is thrilled to be able to bring her back alive.Ryker is introduced to us as a demi-god and the partner that Kyana must accept if she is to undertake the quest to find the Key to Hades. To say these two have a history is an understatement. Their story is the continuous thread through out the entire novel but doesn’t take away from the complexity of the world the reader finds themselves in.The juxtaposition of the characters in this book fascinates me: vampyres and demi-gods, mortals and lichens, Greek Gods and Magic. With every page I kept wondering what other twist this book was going to add to the equation. But even with this level of complexity and scope the book never loses focus on the object, to keep the reader entertained and yearning for more.My only complaint is that I wish there had been a cheat sheet with a list of the Greek gods and their job, like Hades being the god of the dead and Artemis being the goddess of the hunt. The book gives you enough information but I wish I’d had a little more information readily available. In conclusion, this novel is a must read if you enjoy Paranormal Romance, Mythology, Shapeshifter Romance or Magic. Sable Grace’s work has gone from not being on my radar to ensuring I must purchase next book in the Dark Breed series.Notable Scene:“And,” she said, the need to ooze out the venom inside her nearly crippling her, “for the record, you’re not the best. You’re just a product of nepotism. If your daddy wasn’t the God of War, you wouldn’t even be here–”“Enough.” He straightened, suddenly looking too tall and broad for her comfort. Kyana found herself fascinated with the swirling silver in his eyes and the way the gray gave way to blood red. Ryker hissed. “Don’t underestimate me Kyana.”“Back atcha, Ryker.”Charon’s ferry putt-putted over the black, glassy river, coming to a bouncy stop at the dock.Without touching Kyana, Ryker managed to swoop around her and board the ferry. “Come or don’t come, Kyana, but I have a job to do, and I’m not waiting for you to get your head out of your ass long enough to do it with me.”FTC Advisory: Avon/HarperCollins provided me with a copy of Ascension. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyStep aside vampires and werewolves, a new stomping ground has been slowly emerging in the paranormal genres: Greek Mythology. Sable Grace (the pen name of Heather Waters & Laura Baron) doesn’t just borrow one or two elements to create the Dark Breeds world, rather she incorporated the entire pantheon of gods and goddesses. The whole book is really like an urban fantasy version of Homer’s THE ODYSSEY. Not to completely shirk tradition, within this fabulous Greek Mythological world, vampires, demons, and shapeshifters exist as well. The protagonist is a vampire/werewolf hybrid with about as big a chip on her shoulder as you can imagine. It took me quite a few chapters to warm up to Kyana’s uber alpha female personality. There’s tough and then there’s insolent and Kyana tended towards the latter often enough that I wanted to smack her. Her personal history offered an explanation for her behavior, but I was still relieved when she mellowed out halfway through largely due to her relationship with a demigod son of Ares.Personally, I prefer to read about a couple’s first meeting and go from there as opposed to picking up, in this case, a decade after Kyana and Ryker first met. There are a lot of misunderstandings, long held grudges, and missed opportunities mostly because of pride and wounded egos that I would have just as soon bypassed entirely. That being said, once they dealt with all that, I did get swept up in the romance between them.Overall, Greek Mythology fans are going to be in Elysium (aka heaven) with this world. The gods, the Fates, Tartarus, even Charon are integral parts of the Dark Breed world. There’s plenty of well crafted action scenes, and a romantic subplot that comes together nicely in the end. On the flipside, the pace had a tendency to be a little manic at times, the protagonist was uber alpha enough to grow a beard for the first half of ASCENSION, and the supporting cast was less than stellar. It balanced out as a good—but not great—read for me that fans of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassin series will want to check out.Sexual Content:References to rape. A semi graphic sex scene

I am loving the Greek mythology explosion in books as of late. I love Urban Fantasy and was attracted to this book because of the spin on Greek mythology. The authors decided to use the entire pantheon of Gods and Goddesses, the Fates, the River Styx and Charon, Tartarus, Cronus, etc., while adding vampires, lychens and witches into their mythical story. Our protagonist, Kyana, is a hybrid vampire/lychen, which means she is pretty bottom of the barrel in this world. However, because of her mixed heritage, she has the superior skills of both species and thus, becomes Artemis’ best tracer. Tracers work for the Order and find the Chosen, those who have been marked to absorb the power of the pantheon, as they are dying out.Kyana is a tough pill to swallow. She is Alpha Female to the core and will not accept any help, comfort, etc. Her hard outer shell is soon explained, and as the reader, you are equally heartbroken and horrified by her experiences. As a social worker, I’ve begun to look at people differently, and this definitely crosses over into book characters. My perception of Kyana from the start was accurate, and my heart opened up to her as the story progressed. Aside from being spat upon by all other races, Kyana’s mixed heritage brings about some other, more personal issues. Vampires are not known for their commitment, and Lychens mate for life. Not a predicament I’d like to be in.Ryker is the bastard son of Ares, God of War. Ares isn’t known for his gentle ways with women, and Ryker grew up hating the SOB. He’s only involved in his world at all because Ryker’s anger led him down a path of destruction, and his exquisite fighting skills attracted the attention of his father. Due to Ares’ treatment of his mother, Ryker vows to never become involved in a casual relationship. He’s in it for love or not all. Kyana and Ryker have an icky past that is relayed to us gradually and there is much bickering and strife between them throughout the book. However, the POV switches between them, so the reader is allowed a glimpse into their vulnerable sides. This allows us to feel some compassion for their situation and connect with them, all the while wanting to bash them on the head and scream “get on with it!”Per Artemis’ rule, Kyana and Ryker unhappily team up to find out who the hell opened the door to Tartarus, letting all the big, bad uglies out into the world. More importantly, how did they get the key from a long dead and exiled Cronus? All in all, I enjoyed the book, albeit it took some time to become engaged. I thought the ending provided a nice segue into book 2. This book is Urban Fantasy, not Paranormal Romance. While we do get some tender scenes and a few hot, steamy ones, sex is not a major part of the story. A few prominent book bloggers did not finish the book, so you can see how widely varied our opinions and interests are. We can’t like them all!

Ascension by Sable GraceIn this series debut by the writing team of Heather Waters and Laura Barone writing as Sable Grace; we meet Kyana, a half Vampire and half werewolf. Kyana is a tracker with an uncanny ability to find anything she needs to. We also meet Ryker who is a demigod of unique abilities. In this debut we open with finding that the gates of Hell have been opened spewing forth various forms of evil into the world and this gate needs to be closed with a key that Kyana will be tasked to hunt down with the sexy Ryker. Ryker just happens to be the man that spurned Kyana ten years ago and she has never forgiven him for not taking her up on her “offer”.This was an interesting and unique story, with well developed characters, a lot of action and a fine plot line using a new-ish twist on the Greek Gods and Titans. This book also has a solid mystery with plenty of red-herrings to satisfy even the most hardcore mystery lover.Unfortunately I had a lot of difficulty following parts of this novel. I found the world building to be scanty at best. We seemed to be plunged into this world with no explanation and must rely on the bits and pieces that are sparsely meted out to us seemingly on a whim. I'm sure that the following books in this series will explain more of the worlds and have Kyana become a little more compassionate to the Humans she is trying to protect. Another aspect that I had an issue with is that Kyana is supposed to be a kick-butt, take no prisoners type of woman and don’t get me wrong, she really can be, but her incessant whining over Ryker and how he didn't jump at the chance ten years ago to “jump her bones” got to be a bit annoying at times. This book ended on a very interesting and surprising note; very nearly a cliff-hanger that will be sure to draw the readers to the next book in this series.

I love mermaids, and when I started to read Ascension I could barely put it down. It is a great series too, though the last book disappointed me greatly, as the ending was not what I expected.
