What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are a volatile liquid derived naturally from plants. Unlike synthetic oils used to make perfumes, essential oils are natural and plant-based. Before you can tap into their health benefits, the oil or the essence
and active ingredient in the plant has to be extracted. Essential oils can be extracted from a number of plant components including the leaves, stems, roots, seeds, berries, bark or flowers of the plant.
The most popular and accepted way to extract the oil is using a process called steam distillation. Some suppliers of essential oils use this method, while others use solvent-based extraction, a process that involves chemicals. This is frowned upon among practitioners and people who value essential oils for their health benefits. Essential oils extracted using this method are not considered to be therapeutic grade, meaning they may not offer the same benefits as essential oils extracted without chemicals through the steam distillation method.
Chemicals used in solvent-based extraction can alter the properties of the essential oils and destroy their benefits. Some types of essential oils can also be extracted using a method called carbon dioxide extraction, most commonly essential oils that come from tree resins like myrrh or frankincense. Still, for the most part, steam distillation is still the method of choice.
An industry that commonly uses solvent extraction is the perfume industry. The essential oils you find in bath products, perfumes, air fresheners and other commercial products are usually extracted using solvents because it’s less costly and time-consuming. For therapeutic purposes, an oil should be therapeutic grade. This means it was extracted without the use of harmful solvents like hexane and acetone, chemicals that may be harmful to your health. That’s something to be aware of when you’re shopping for essential oils.Don’t confuse essential oils
with fragrance oils.
Fragrance oils are synthetic and don’t offer the same benefits a therapeutic-grade essential oil offers.
Essential oils aren’t cheap. It takes a lot of plant material to make an ounce of essential oil. In fact it can take over 200 pounds of plant material to make a single ounce of essential oil. If you find an essential oil that seems unusually low in price, be wary. It may be adulterated, meaning a manufacturer added a less expensive oil such as vegetable oil or other synthetic material as a filler. That’s
