01. The rabbit and the old man

Once upon a time there was a cunning little rabbit. Like all rabbits, he loved carrots and tender little lettuces. He dug deep barrows into a vegetable garden he had come across and ate to his heart’s content.

One day, the old man who owned the garden got tired of someone eating all his vegetables and decided to get a big dog to guard his garden.

When the rabbit arrived to the vegetable garden the following day, what should he see but a big, drooling dog staring at him from behind the fence. When it barked, the little rabbit ran off, his little heart beating fast.

One, two, three, five days later, the little rabbit kept looking at the garden from afar; how he missed the crunchy carrots... He just had to come up with a solution. Indeed, as he sat there feeling miserable, he came up with a great idea. He ran to the village and went straight to the butcher’s. He took some meat and a few bones from the butcher’s rubbish and went straight to the dog. He threw the dog the meat, and while he was eating greedily, the little rabbit snuck into the garden and managed to eat a couple of carrots.

Three whole days went by and the little rabbit repeated the same process, taking meat thrown out by the butcher to the big dog. While the dog ate the meat, the little rabbit was left in peace to nibble on the vegetables. The old man, who had cottoned on to what was happening, decided that the dog was no good and decided to get a bear.

When the little rabbit saw the bear he dropped all the meat he was carrying and stared in disbelief! One, two, three, five days later, he finally came up with another plan. He went to the woods and found a beehive. He filled a little bucket with honey – everybody knows bears are mad about honey – and took it to the bear. When she smelt the honey, the bear
