    Introduction

In late February 2011, Google changed the landscape of conventional SEO forever. The farmer or Panda update as it is more widely known threw a major spanner in the works for thousands of internet marketers, website developers, and content writers. And the updates are still being rolled out, over a year later. Each one shifting the goal posts even further as Google tweaks and upgrades its algorithm. (LATE EDIT: The most recent version was the Penguin update (rolled out late April 2012) which has literally wreaked havoc across the SEO world.)

But what does this all mean from a content writer’s perspective? Well, for one thing the bar has risen considerably in terms of content quality required for websites, blogs, web 2.0 sites, etc. No more can you just knock something up quickly. No more can you rely on PLR (public label rights) articles to use/pass off as your own content. No more can you rely on poorly-spun articles. No more can you outsource to third-world countries, knowing you’ll receive poor-quality content because you paid $1-$2 per article. Even issues such as grammar and spelling are now under scrutiny like never before. Write a half-decent piece of content with lots of grammatical and spelling mistakes and you are asking for trouble.

It means we have to brush up on our grammar and spelling. We basically have to pull our socks up and start writing content that our (or our clients) website visitors are going to find engaging and helpful. The general consensus appears to be that whereby before we could get away with a 200-300 word piece of content
