About this ebook
From July 17-20, 2003, 600 eager Harry Potter fans and scholars converged in Orlando for Nimbus - 2003, the first Harry Potter fan convention. Over three and a half days of presentations, amidst the atmosphere of learning, they ate, argued, lived, and breathed Harry Potter. They rejoiced, they mourned, they connected, and they tried their wands at being wizards.
These are the summaries of Nimbus-2003's papers, presentations and panels; they were all written between the releases of Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix, before Dementors arrived on Privet Drive or Sirius Black fell through drapery, before we knew what a Horcrux was, or anything about Luna Lovegood.
Nimbus - 2003 set the tone, the schedule and the concept for many Harry Potter fan conventions that have since taken place around the world, and for many fandomers, it was the first time they came together to discuss and celebrate Harry Potter. Hundreds of Harry Potter fans will return to Orlando in July of 2012 for HPEF's eighth and last event, ASCENDIO, to wrap up what has been a ground-breaking series of events for, by and about Harry Potter fans.
Flash back to the early days of the Harry Potter fandom with the Nimbus - 2003 summaries of sessions about Snape, shipping, science, storytelling, slash, censorship and yes, more Snape.

Since 2003, HPEF has put on more Harry Potter fan events than anyone else, in Orlando, Salem, Las Vegas, Toronto, Dallas and San Francisco. If you're interested in a spectacular experience in the Wizarding World, and want more Harry Potter discussion, analysis and debate, join us at Ascendio at the Loews Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Orlando from July 12 - 15, 2012; more information is at http://hp2012.org or http://twitter.com/HPEF. HP Education Fanon, Inc. (HPEF) is a U.S.-based educational non-profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to producing academic symposia on the Harry Potter books and cultural phenomenon. We strive to distinguish our symposia by the premiere quality of the programming we offer, particularly the caliber of our featured speakers and guests. Our volunteer planners aim to bring fans and scholars professional-quality, creative, premium experiences for affordable prices. HPEF also promotes the benefits of reading for both children and adults by offering Library Science and Education tracks in our symposium programs. We have also donated portions of our proceeds to Book Aid International, Books Behind Bars, Kids Need to Read and other literacy projects; we continue to identify other charities whose missions focus on providing audiences with books to read and love. Conferences to our credit include Nimbus – 2003, The Witching Hour (2005), Lumos (2006), Prophecy (2007), Portus (2008), Azkatraz (2009), Infinitus (2010), and the upcoming Ascendio (2012). Here, we present the selected conference proceedings from past HPEF events.
