SharePoint is a web application portal used to build intranet and internet sites in order to share information, collaborate, communicate, and facilitate businesses to make the right decisions based upon their individual requirements. SharePoint 2010 is offered in three editions.

SharePoint Foundation 2010 – Provides a low cost solution to small-sized companies and a platform to collaborate and share information. It provides Sites, Libraries, Lists, Basic Search, and social networking tools. SharePoint Foundation is offered free of charge for companies with a licensed Windows Server.

SharePoint Server Standard – Provides all the features of SharePoint Foundation 2010 plus the features available through Standard Client Access Licenses, which help to make optimum use of the core functionality. The Standard edition requires a license.

SharePoint Server Enterprise – Provides all the features of SharePoint Server Standard edition plus provides Access, Excel, Visio, and InfoPath Services to deliver the full capabilities of SharePoint.
