    INTRODUCTION

Thank you for your interest in Surapong’s Pick Up & Go Thailand by Surapong Khankiew.

It is my hope that this book will help those who travel abroad, to quickly learn the language without frustration or confusion. They can communicate with anyone and anywhere, without fear of being misunderstood or not being understood at all. I believe that a foreign language shouldn’t be difficult to learn. They are simply sounds, much like music, being rearranged in different ways and conveying a different meaning or emotion. When those sounds are arranged properly, they can create beautiful music and harmony.

In this book, I try to give you honest information on how people actually speak in Thailand. Whenever possible, I try to use words that you recognize and can pronounce; however, that’s easier said than done.

The Thai Language is actually very easy to learn. They lack pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, etc. You can simply grab words and paste them together to form a sentence...now, isn’t that easy.

Even though the Thai Language itself is easy, getting the right pronunciation poses a bit of a challenge. I’ve done my best to give you as close of a pronunciation as possible. Once you start to hear Thai people speak, you’ll be able to make slight adjustments in order to sound exactly like the natives. One thing to keep in mind is to say the words quickly for clearer comprehension. Also, much like the English language, some of the words need to be used in context for people to fully understand.

The most important thing to remember is that I’ve written the translation much like an English Dictionary. If you read it like any English word, by sounding out the syllables, you should have little to no problem getting the correct sound in Thai. Many of the words have similar sounds that you may be familiar with; for instance, words ending in lye or nye sounds the same as bye except with an l or n. However, there are certain words which are difficult to pronounce and require an accent mark.

Here is some information on how to pronounce the accent marks:

á, é, ó should be pronounced with a HIGHER tone.

    For example; Pal, Me, Tot.

à, è, ò should be pronounced with a LOWER tone.

    For example; Car, Met, Mood.

Take note on the different accent mark above the
