    The Dying God

"Stop! Thief!" the baker hollered as she shot down the street. She tucked the loaf of bread, still warm from the ovens, close to her tiny, underfed frame as she dodged around merchant and patron alike in the market.

Shouts rumbled through the crowd, and bodies started pressing in on her, hands reaching out to grab her. The baker’s two sons had given chase and were gaining, fast. Scrawny though she might be, the girl was clever and she spun and weaved like a dancer as she moved effortlessly through the crowd. Until…

    Crash!

The sound was deafening to her as she flew bodily into a captain of the City Guard. The force of the impact threw her backward. She landed painfully onto her back. The wind was knocked violently from her lungs as she landed.

Blinking to rid her eyes of the glare and dust, it took the girl a moment to realise that someone had grabbed her by her elbow and was hauling her to her feet.

Alright, you, a gruff voice said amidst the rustle of wool and steel. Up you get.

The girl looked up as she found her footing. The Captain scowled down at her.

Give me that! he snapped, yanking the loaf of bread from her arm. Devoid of its warmth, the girl began to shiver. The trembling did not stop as the guardsman pulled her back to the baker. He gave her a shake as he presented her to the angry merchant.

    Here’s your bread, the Captain
