    Forward

In case you haven't noticed, the face of the IT landscape is changing (and fast). Flat world forces like cheap offshore labor and cloud computing have commoditized what once was an industry filled with skilled labor jobs. IT departments have turned to contractors to try to offload cost but can't seem to keep up with business demands for lower cost and faster delivery. Frustrated with what is perceived as an Ivory Tower mentality, business owners have decided to skip IT and just get things done themselves. Business Intelligence departments are not immune to these forces and even though BI is one the top of CIO investments (source) in the coming years, they see expectations rising ever higher while their customers are finding it easier and easier to bypass them altogether with tools like Tablaeu and MicroStrategy Express.

This book helps the reader understand common mistakes and bad habits developed over the past 25 years of IT dominated budgets and commoditizing of computer skills. Dewayne has a keen understanding of the forces of change and provides guidance on how to not just survive, but thrive in a brave new world of empowered business users and disruptive technologies. He has figured out that getting more and more detailed requirements documents so you can send development further away from the actual users is a race to the bottom. BI Managers need to embrace their users and find creative ways to be responsive in days or hours and not weeks and months. They need to develop a supporting staff that can empathize with the plight of a user and comes up with creative solutions and not simply fulfill requests as they are dumped upon them. The methods and practices outlined in the pages that follow will allow you to transform your team from within to be more effective and more satisfied with the work they do.

I first met Dewayne while he hurled candy at astute observers during a lecture he gave to a packed room at a conference a few years ago, a reward for participation in what can be very dry talks. I knew right away that he had a gift for getting someone’s attention public speaking. In the years that followed I have found that he has an excellent vision for a better BI organization in addition to a passion for music and philanthropy. It is rare to be a gifted communicator and have the great ideas to match the delivery, but Dewayne is blessed with both of these qualities. I hope that you learn a great deal from the following text and enjoy reading it as much as I have.

    Business Intelligence and Self Service

BI, Business Intelligence, is a buzz word in today’s corporate hallways and executive lunches alike. BI may seem both evasive and vague to those who stand on the bleachers of technology, however the concept is a real one to those of us who are tasked at implementing it.

    Wikipedia defines Business Intelligence as:

"... a set of methodologies, processes, architectures, and technologies that transform raw data into
