Preface
Small businesses are known to be the highest employer of labor in many economies of the world. The impact of small business support to economic growth is by no means a small one. Yet small businesses are still left out in the cold and are lacking greatly in areas of startup funds and later stage financing.
In some countries, small business jobs account for about 50% to 80% of all jobs. That is an indication that lack of growth in small businesses can hamper economic growth. The need to ensure that small businesses have access to finance is an urgent issue that needs to be addressed as a matter of priority.
Every entrepreneur needs the right operating environment like access to finance and business advisors to enable them continue to foster economic growth. It is worthy to note that small businesses employ local residents and thus create unique sense of belonging to individuals. The effect is that quality of life of individuals are enhanced through employment and the business has a better chance of surviving challenges because employees feel committed to make it work.
Recent economic woes plaguing the world have led to increase in the number of people wanting to start their own business. This caused an increase in frustrations and challenges experienced by small businesses who want to secure business funding.
It is still surprising to know that despite all discussions and agenda of various governments around the world, there has been a very little impact on helping small businesses secure business funding. It seems that banks are still unyielding and more determined to reject small business application for loans and overdraft.
Why you need to know about crowdfunding
While entrepreneurs and small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, and banks are being blamed for the difficulties of small businesses to secure business lending, it is important to note that banks are not left out of the recession waves blowing across the globe.
What is even more challenging is the lack of information and knowledge about alternative source of business finance. Many small businesses are still hanging on to the traditional belief that only banks can facilitate business finance. A report by Experian (Credit Agency) confirmed that many small business owners are yet to know that they can secure business finance through other sources.
In the past, it is a very difficult task to get information on any topic. In most cases it would require a visit to the library. All that has changed dramatically due to the power of the internet. Dissemination of information has become very easily available through various means.
The power of the internet to harness and pull resources and information from likeminded people has facilitated the generation of creative and alternative means of raising finance for just any venture.
Crowdfunding is one of such alternative means of raising finance from the crowd. The internet has made geographical locations irrelevant because it created a global paying ground where people connect virtually to collaborate and interact and invest.
Crowdfunding is the buzz word that has been giving a meaning when a group of likeminded people drawn together by the power of the internet can make individual decision to support a project. There are no limits to the kind of project that can be supported through crowdfunding. It could be business, philanthropic, not for profit, individual dreams or passion.
The exciting part of crowdfunding is that when an entrepreneur or a small business harnesses the benefits of crowdfunding, the business is no more at the mercy of banks and other main stream lending organizations. Amazing results are been achieved by ordinary people who tapped into the benefit of the internet to secure funds from diverse group of people in various geographic locations.
I am a big proponent of crowdfunding because of the ability of entrepreneurs and small businesses to have access to capital which they need to turn their ideas into a reality. It means that just anyone, anywhere can have the same opportunity to raise funds and likewise anyone anywhere can make a personal decision to support worthy projects.
There are without doubt some challenges in crowdfunding but there are indications that crowdfunding platforms and industry regulators are developing approaches to mitigate those challenges. In the recent developments it has been noted that sophisticated
and traditional investors have become involved in the crowdfunding sector.
Why I wrote the book
There is a very wide gap between what crowdfunding is doing and what people know about crowdfunding. Even among those that know about crowdfunding, the level of knowledge of crowdfunding and its industry is still at an elementary level.
This could also be the cause of some scattered incidents of were crowdfunding went bad.
Crowdfunding industry is young and it is still growing. The growth will continue even as the controversy about it continues to increase.
Most of the books that are already in the market about crowdfunding are based on practices on specific crowdfunding portals. I realized that there is a need to have a book that will expound the topic of crowdfunding with best practices concept. Whatever crowdfunding portal you decide to use, this book will provide a good foundation to enable you demand the best from the portal.
