      Tears of the Moon

      Metuaro and his friend, Tai, were just pulling in their nets from the sea when they heard the long moaning blast of a conch shell. The two fishermen frowned at each other as another blast came, followed by three quick notes.

      It’s the signal of the King’s messengers, Tai said, his expression wondering.

      Metuaro sighed tiredly. They had just started working on the nets and there was a possibility that, if they stopped now, the fish could escape and all their hard work would go for nothing, but the King’s law stated that as soon as the conch shell blew all islanders were to stop whatever they were doing and come to hear what the messengers had to say. Messengers were emissaries from the King and were due almost the same deference and honor due to him. Already, Tai had dropped his end of the net and was wading through the clear waters of the bay back to the
