Prologue - From Zero to Hero
With a glass of cognac in my hands in an isolated room in my River Rock hotel suite, I drink to depression as I ended another poker session being stuck too deep. My laptop screen has fresh scratches and I feel that my luck at the poker tables have simply run out. One bad beat after another makes the last few weeks feel like an endless loop of frustration.
I'm sure we've all been through the ups and downs but sometimes these swings are too large to recover. Eventually, you break and start to make mistakes. With this new generation of poker players who consistently improves their game at even mid stakes, your fall will be capitalized in a blink of a few hands, which makes you quickly realize that you are the fish on the table. And then the question that you hope will never be asked revolves around in your head: Is it time to quit and find a real job?

As all hopes draw thin, I was approached by my good buddy Ken, who introduced me to the new but prospering poker game on the block: Open Face Chinese Poker (OFCP). The next few weeks to follow were essential in my character development, but even more so for my poker dreams to stay alive. That was 6 months ago!
You often hear the term, pay to play.
Well, in this rather new OFCP environment, almost everyone is an early adapter. Although the swings are brutal, I did not see myself, a regular mid stakes poker player, to be an underdog in OFCP. In fact, upon learning the basics, OFCP tested my tilt control and bankroll management to a whole new level. As the game advanced in baby steps, my game evolved towards a much higher variance. I profited small but steadily over a course of marathon grinds, even at what I considered low stakes at the time ($1/point).
Soon after I became totally addicted to OFCP, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and even World Series of Poker introduced quite a number of tables and tournaments to spread its publicity. Las Vegas casinos started opening up OFCP games in their poker rooms and top poker pros stood behind the game. In a rapidly growing market, you must adapt and grow or give up. I decided to stick with the former.
There is no free meal, not even in Sin City. I've thought a lot about OFCP hands, even in the shower back in my River Rock hotel suite. I've asked many friends about possible better
plays, especially after the first 5 cards are set. There are still many avenues that have yet to be explored but always remember that a point saved is a point earned.

How to Read this Book Effectively?
This book is bombarded with Open Face Chinese Poker information that you should treat it like a textbook
instead. There are too many rules and systems to digest in one sitting, so we suggest reading and revisiting only one chapter each day to optimize your learning experience. When you are going through the Strategies Section, STOP and write down on paper any notes that you found helpful. Don't hesitate to recap these notes through your head in the shower at night. Remember that you will not have time to look through these notes in a live game.
