I have no idea when I bought this book, it was sometime back in the last decade, and it sat on my bookshelf for years, patiently waiting for me to be ready for it. I started reading it a few months ago, when I was stalled in my work as a volunteer. I did some of the exercises in the book. I found the exercise on pg. 163, "Creative Dream Questions," to be very helpful in identifying where I was going with my particular creative dream, which involved the volunteer work I have been doing for the past 16 years as a mental health advocate. I also worked in the field as a peer advocate for five years. The exercise, "What if you're stuck with your creative dream?" on pages 196-198 also helped me explore ways of dealing with the feeling of stagnation and being stalled that I've experienced for awhile. In short, this book helped me decide in which direction I need to move. The book's format follows a calendar year, months 1-12, with a topic of exploration for each month. Each chapter ends with an exercise to do for each week of the month. By exercise, I simply mean that the author gives you something to think about or do (not labor or time intensive) for that week. Each chapter ends with a list of resources, consisting of books, recordings and websites that the reader might find helpful in her or his exploration of creativity. At the end of the book, there are lists of "Dreamstoppers," (what stops you from living your creative dream?) and "Dreamstarters," (what starts your creative dream?) and questions and answers that people have about living their creative dreams, with answers from SARK. The book is beautifully written, and the presentation is fabulous, with illustrations by the author. Just looking through the book makes me feel optimistic. I couldn't find any typos or errors in the text, which is a great thing. This book will definitely help you engage with your creative dreams, whatever they may be, and inspire you along your life's path. Highly recommended.

Make Your Creative Dreams Real - SARK

Finding and Naming Your Dream(s)

The purpose of this chapter is to assist you in choosing a dream (or dreams) or to strengthen the one(s) you already have.

What’s Your Dream?

FIRST, I WANT TO WRAP YOU IN A CLOAK OF COMFORT AND SAFETY. Comfort coaxes dreams out. You can get some paper and markers for this next part because notes or drawings can be helpful in this process. Or, if you wish, just read along and imagine that you’re writing or drawing.

Next, I’d like to ask you to imagine that there’s a skylight or door on top of your head. Open this door and let liquid color or light pour down through your heart and the rest of your body, and out the soles of your feet. Do this several times, until you feel more space inside. Let this transform your energy and expand it. You might find yourself smiling slightly, or grinning.

now, take a deep breath

WE FORGET TO BREATHE CONSCIOUSLY, or to honor our progress with a celebratory breath.

Let this deep breath lead you into imagining or picturing your dream.

If you already know what your dream is, just make a note of it, and then if you wish, come along to explore new dreams.

If you don’t know what your dream is, or aren’t sure, I’d like to invite you to create a dream activator inside yourself. If you are reading these words, you have already done this! This is a state of mind that is curious, flexible, and ready to make decisions. Let the dream activator bring you back to the first page of the book, where you will reread the creative dream description. Next, go to pages 34, 35 and read through the dream categories.

Now, what creative dream can you imagine doing?

Let the dream activator work on your behalf to choose one.

Write it down, or have it in mind.

If you still don’t know, or aren’t ready to choose, that’s O.K., because the dream activator will work as you read this book.

I’m a recovering perfectionist who is often afraid to choose the wrong thing, so I don’t choose anything, thinking that will keep me safe. Safe from what? Safe from playing a game in a book that might bring more light into my life?

How Living Your Dreams Benefits You and Others

DO YOU SPARKLE? Is there a certain glint in your smile? Is there a time in your day or night that belongs to no one but you, where you do something you love?

When someone asks, Are you doing what you love? Are you living your dreams? can you answer with a resounding yes? If not, are you in a process of discovering what your dreams are?

People living their dreams are more joy-full and full of life.

You can tell when you meet them because you feel refreshed or uplifted by their presence. This joy carries over into everything they do. To creative dreamdivers, the world is full of opportunities, adventures, and chances to think and act creatively. A dream liver is more likely to think of new ways to overcome challenges in life.

When you are fully, or partially, engaged in living your dreams, you actually create more energy. This energy can then be used to help others in creative and interesting
