I read a story some years ago about a human resources department that had a full length mirror at their counter. A job applicant would have to stand at the counter to receive an application to fill out. The mirror was positioned in a way that the applicant would notice it as soon as he or she walked in. In big bold letters, there was a sign over the mirror that said: Would you hire someone who looks like this?
The applicant would only see their own image in the mirror, so the obvious conclusion was, How do I look?
or more specifically, Am I dressed properly to be looking for a job?
Today, with the internet, social media, Skype and other electronic communications devices, the search for employment has changed in its methods, but the same question prevails in your job search. Would an employer hire someone who looks like you? This question is answered by prospective employers long before there is a face to face interview. It is answered in your resume, in your cover letter, by phone or other means long before the prospective employer actually meet you in person.
You may be wondering why no one is responding to your applications and resumes. You are a good worker and a good employee and even a good person, but no one seems to be getting that picture. We will answer the question: Would you hire someone that looks like this?
in this book.
The reason I decided to write this is because I have recently encountered some people who I care about, struggling to find a job. I know they would make great employees, but that fact is not being translated effectively to the employers. I had been in business for many years, have been an employee and an employer, so I can look at the job market from both sides. At the age of 51, my wife and I planted
a Southern Baptist Church in Florida. At first, there were only the two of us. As the congregation grew, we bought acreage and built a ministry center and have seen many lives changed. Why is that important to this book? We have worked with an all volunteer staff
and have learned some of the principles we will cover in this book.
For instance, we have discovered that people do much better if they find out what they are good at, what they are gifted to do, and are given an opportunity to do it. Idle people are not happy people. Everyone essentially wants to know they are making a difference. The best way to excel is by doing that which you are gifted to do. I always told my son as he was growing up and finding his way in this world, to figure out what he loves doing, that which he would do for free, and find a way to make a living doing that.
In this life, you don’t want to burn out by doing a job that you hate. You don’t want to rust out by not doing anything. It is better to wear out doing what you love to do and are fortunate enough to be paid for doing it.
In this book, you will get the benefit of my experience, of course, but I have also compiled much of what you will read from various sources with up to date expertise in today’s job market. When you are finished reading and applying the principles herein, you should be able to make yourself look good in the mirror of modern technology.
If you are unemployed, then looking for a job is your full time job. If you are employed in a dead end job or are looking for the position of your dreams, then searching for another job is your part time job. You are going to want to put in some serious overtime.
Several years ago, I made the decision that I would like to go into the banking industry as a mortgage representative. I had no experience. I picked up three books about how to write a resume and applied to three banks. I got two interviews and landed the job I really wanted. Seven months after starting the job, I was named the employee of the month out of all the employees in all forty three of the bank’s branches. I realize that was a long time ago and this is not your father’s job market, but the same principles apply today as they did then. The bottom line is: You need to look good!
I will present 5 keys you will need to diligently apply in order to look good to a potential employer and to find the job you really want. Before I close this preface, I would like for you to know that I have made tons of mistakes, way more times than I got it right. I would love for you to benefit from the lessons I have learned and from those times when I did get it right. May God bless you as you glean from these pages and may they be a help to you in your job search.
