«THE OLYMPIC GAMES: HISTORY AND FUTURE»

Ask people about a prominent feature of ancient Greece, and most will mention the Olympic Games. To the Greeks it was important to root the Olympic Games in mythology. They were held in honor of Zeus. The exact origins of the Games are shrouded in myths and legends, but records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia. They were celebrated until 393 AD when they were suppressed by Theodosius I. The Games were usually held every four years. During a celebration of the Games, an Olympic Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel from their countries to the Games in safety. The winners were crowned only with the wreath made of the wild olive tree branch. However, they were compensated in many other ways besides being honored and esteemed. Even then, sponsors existed. They were not such as Pepsi, IBM or Microsoft, but the «sponsor’s board», so to speak, was composed of wealthy Athenians, Elians and Myceneans who offered presents to athletes.

His vision and political skill led to the revival of the Olympics Games which had been practiced since antiquity. Born into a French aristocratic family, he became an academic and studied a broad range of topics, most notably education and history.

Currently the Olympic Movement encompasses a large number of national and international sporting organizations and federations, recognized media partners, as well as athletes, officials, judges, and every other person and institution that agrees to abide by the rules of the Olympic Charter. As the umbrella organization of the Olympic Movement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is responsible for selecting the host city, overseeing the planning of the Olympic Games, updating and approving the sports program, and negotiating sponsorship and broadcasting rights. The following sports (or disciplines of a sport) make up the current Winter Olympic Games: figure skating, speed skating, short track speed skating, ice hockey, curling, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, ski jumping, nordic combined, freestyle skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton and luge. The following sports make up the current Summer Olympic Games: diving, swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, gymnastics, volleyball, equestrianism, wrestling, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, fencing, field hockey, football, handball, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon and weightlifting. Rugby and golf will enter the Olympic Program in 2016 and wrestling might be replaced by another kind of sport. Nevertheless lots of people hope that wrestling will remain in the Olympic Program. The IOC voted in early 2006 to remove baseball and softball from the
