Amsterdam , Brussels & Cologne - Sam Dave Morgan
Chapter 1 - Introduction
Amsterdam is best known for its luxurious canal houses, charming gabled facades and coffee shops. No wonder Amsterdam is often refered to as Venice of the north. Amsterdam is the largest city and the capital of the Netherlands (Holland).
Explore this beautiful city on foot or by bike and enjoy all that is on offer. Amsterdam is rich in art and culture and is home to the largest collection of Van Gough in the world; fans of the post- impressionist movement will be overjoyed with the offering. As well as being famous for art, Amsterdam is also known for its flowers; once springtime arrives, Amsterdam bursts into bloom; it is a truly beautiful time to visit the city as you are surrounded by colour while breathing the fresh scents of the flowers.
Despite how calm and relaxed Amsterdam appears, it has had a turbulent past. Taking a tour to learn about the suffering of people during the Holocaust is one of the most worthwhile things you can do while you are here; not a pleasant experience, a somewhat harrowing one, but the history is integral to the place the city has become today, and it is important to remember the suffering people endured, in a time not so distant from now. Various companies offer tours, some tailored to the city’s history, some more general; whichever you choose, you will undoubtedly benefit from specialist knowledge, and feel you have learnt something about Amsterdam, rather than just seeing it for the beautiful place it is today.
Amsterdam can be an expensive city to visit; free entry to museums and galleries is uncommon, however if you purchase an Amsterdam Museum Card you can benefit from great savings. It’s worth doing some independent research to see if it would work out financially cheaper to invest in this card, rather than paying an entrance fee into every museum you plan on visiting. If you have chance to cram in several museum trips during your visit, or will be returning in the future, the museum card is definitely a good idea.
The café culture is what many people come to Amsterdam for; however there are an increasing number of cool bars and restaurants appearing around the city. Where once ‘hippy’s’ and groups on stag parties were drawn to Amsterdam, a trendier crowd are moving in for different reasons.
Amsterdam has a rich architecture history. The oldest building in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk meaning Old Church which is located at the heart of the Wallen, consecrated in 1306. Amsterdam is one of the Benelux countries which includes Belgium and Luxembourg. These Benelux countries has a lot to offer no matter who you are or what your interests. These small countries are immersed with a large amount of stunning architecture, history, diversity in culture, climate and scenery.
Thanks to the very layout of Benelux, it is possible to see many of these sights and have many great experiences in a single trip. All you need to decide is where to go. There is no better way to see these countries than by train since each of them are well connected by several high speed trains.
This book covers sights around Amsterdam, Brussesls and Cologne. My sincere attempts through this book is to list a few great sights; that you can try, which will ensure you have a great holiday and also give a taster of some of what Europe has to offer.Book is filled with pictures which will give you a colorful reading experience.
