DEDICATION

Dedicated to the late Stanley Reiben, Friend, Counselor, renowned Attorney, who participated in the famed Scottsboro Boys case. Although Attorney Reiben passed away in 1985, his contribution to the safeguarding of our civil rights lives on through the results of his defense of George Whitmore, a young man who was coerced into making three false murder confessions by detectives in Brooklyn, New York. Whitmore's exoneration became one of the cases cited by the United States Supreme Court in the Miranda decision of 1966. Its mandate that police advise arrested persons of their right to remain silent and consult with a lawyer before being questioned about a crime has given a voice to those who might otherwise have been silenced by bullying and manipulating by police and prosecutors. We are forever indebted to you, Attorney Reiben, and have never forgotten what you told us one night at dinner.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We would like to thank the following people who encouraged us in our pursuit of astrology and were so tremendously supportive when we wrote the first edition of ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS: noted Astrologers Zoltan Mason, Roberta Wilson, Maria Elise Crummere, and Maria Graciette; Jo Ann Huckvale and Eugene Prakapas at Simon and Schuster; and our dear friends Arthur Jacob, Marlu Been-Swan, and Irene Allen, in whose beautiful east side Manhattan apartment the original book was written. It’s been many years in between, but this new revised edition of our international bestseller could not have been written without their help.

ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS, by Jeanne Rejaunier and Lu Ann Horstman, was originally published by Pocket Books, a division of Simon and Schuster, New York, and by New English Library in the United Kingdom. The book has been completely revised and updated for this new edition.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

CHAPTER ONE

ABOUT ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS

This book is about astrology and your love life, with a definite emphasis on sex. First of all, we hope you have both a satisfying love life and a healthy sex life to go with it. Everyone is born with a horoscope, however, a fulfilling love life with all the benefits of great sex has never been a birthright.

If you find yourself in the latter category, denied the basic delights and pleasures of love both emotionally and physically, we hope this book can be of benefit to you. If you are in a relationship with someone, maybe we can help you stay that way and grow together from where you are now. Should you be one of the unlucky ones who are currently saddled with the wrong person, we’d like to help you out too. Astrology is a great tool that gives us the power to understand ourselves and others.

Some four decades ago, the first edition of our ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS was published in the United States by Pocket Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. The book became a classic, commanding attention throughout the English-speaking world, with editions, syndications and newspaper serializations published in not only in the United States, but in England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand as well. Ours was the original ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS. Since then, while there have been many imitators both in title and concept, astrology buffs have remained faithful followers of our original work. Over the intervening years, with some frequency, loyal readers have been urging us to write a followup or sequel. Until now, both of us have been occupied with other creative endeavors. However, when we discovered on the internet that a copy of our 1971 ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS was being offered for sale at a staggering price of $1900, we agreed that now was the time to delay no longer in giving our audience what they’d been asking for. Nineteen hundred dollars, while flattering, was just too high a price to pay! We knew it was time to offer our fans an updated book at a fair price. And we firmly believe now more than ever is the moment to reach more people, to help them to better understand themselves and their significant other, to open channels of communication on how to create and maintain fulfilling relationships in every kind of love. If you are already into astrology, you know how potent an aid it can be. If this is your introduction to astrology, we are happy to welcome you into our astrological family.

So much has happened since our first ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS bestseller hit the stands four decades ago. During this time, the astrology field has grown and deepened, attracting a wider audience than ever before. Astrology is one of the most popular subjects online, in bricks and mortar bookstores and in magazines and daily newspapers.

Since the publication of our original AFL, astronomers and astrologers have determined that our solar system does not end with the previously known outer planets of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, but expands into an even wider realm. From the late 1970s on, the discovery of new planetary bodies that affect our lives has been making waves in astrology, forcing us to rethink the changing conception of our place in the cosmos. Not only originally known planets but planetoids and asteroids are increasingly being used in contemporary astrological charts. The latter in horoscope interpretation is an exciting feature, as asteroids provide the astrologer with in interesting depth meanings. Among these, the asteroid Eros reveals a great deal about our erotic nature. As you read further into this book, you will be able to discover how Eros can sexually affect your own particular life via your chart.

In the latter half of the 20th century, astrology experienced a resurgence of popular interest as a major component of the New Age movement. At the time we wrote the original ASTROLOGY FOR LOVERS, we spoke about the coming Age of Aquarius. As the world anticipated the ending of the outgoing Piscean Age together with an accompanying unfolding of renewed and heightened changes being ushered in, we explained at that time how we were standing on the cusp of the Aquarian Age, and that according to experts, it might take another 50-100 years or more for the full force of that New Age to officially dawn. As this time draws ever closer, more and more people have already awakened to or are now recognizing a spiritual dimension previously unrealized in their lives.

Today, more than one third of Americans profess a belief in astrology, and nearly 50% consider astrology to be scientific. To be sure, astrology and allied spiritual tools have appealed to segments of humanity throughout the ages. In our own country alone, many of the Founding Fathers relied on astrology and related spiritual influences for guidance. It is well known that President Abraham Lincoln sought the services of a psychic in the White House and held numerous séances during his term; President Theodore Roosevelt kept a copy of his natal chart on his desk in the Oval Office of the White House. During the Second World War, the US, the British and German governments all hired astrologers to gather information about their adversaries. President Ronald Reagan’s astrologer for nearly 50 years was Hollywood astrologer to the stars Carroll Righter, while First Lady Nancy Reagan’s personal favorite was the recently deceased San Francisco astrologer Joan Quigley.

Western astrology, which had been around for centuries, is said to have entered the modern age with the 1936 publication of The Astrology of Personality, by Dane Rudhyar, in which Rudhyar applied to astrology ideas of contemporary philosophy and Jungian psychology. In a career spanning over 60 years, Rudhyar became the guiding voice of humanistic astrology. We were privileged to know and work with the legendary Dane Rudhyar, to hear one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th century at the piano playing his extraordinary music, to listen to the profound thoughts on astrology and so many other subjects from this man who is considered the seminal astrological innovator of the twentieth century.

We also credit as a big influence in our astrological education the man named Dean of American Astrologers, Carroll Righter, who himself had been a student of the great Evangeline Adams. Righter’s Hollywood film community clientele included well known movie stars Robert Mitchum, Marlene Dietrich, Arlene Dahl, Robert Cummings, the aforementioned Ronald Reagan, and a whole long list of other silver screen luminaries. For years, Righter taught weekly classes in his Hollywood home. When we attended his lectures and monthly Sun sign parties, we noted the photo of Righter together with Reagan in an honored spot on the living room piano. Righter was famous for saying, The stars impel, they don't compel, which even became the title of one of his books. Reagan mentioned Righter in his autobiography, and the California state legislature issued a proclamation signed by Governor Pat Brown (father of Governor Jerry Brown), stating that Righter was the most influential astrologer of the 20th Century.

In many ways, the two of us are something of a bridge between the past, the present and the future, combining influences of giants of a bygone era with the modern. Thus as we look ahead, we bring a unique background and point of view to this our revised edition of AFL. We were at the right place at the right time. Back when, we had the amazing good fortune to sit at the feet of some of the most revered astrologers and spiritual leaders of the 20th century, many who were actually born in the 19th century. In addition to Rudhyar and Righter, another older astrologer who influenced us was Zoltan Mason, the remarkable Hungarian transplant to New York, proprietor of the recherché Mason’s Bookshop on Lexington Avenue, located a stone’s throw from Bloomingdale’s, who is famous for having said, The only true sport is defying the stars. Not to forget the innovative, idiosyncratic but always on the mark Roberta Wilson (another great astrologer born in the 19th century); heavy smoker Jungian Edwin Steinbrecher; and other well known seers of the day who made an enormous impression and taught us so much. Later, we were influenced by more contemporary star gazers like Maria Elise Crummere, Ruth Gillis, Lynne Palmer, Linda Clark, and Sacred Rose Tarot designer Johanna Gargiulo Sherman. As Lord Tennyson said, I am a part of all I have met, and we certainly met and interacted with a procession of unique influences, individuals, gurus, prophets and yes, false prophets during the number of years we lived in Hollywood.

To mention but a few of these, in no particular order, they include recognizable figures such as Carlos Castaneda, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (we were personally initiated by the Mahrishi well before the Beatles ever heard of him, and before the movement formed and evolved into TM); pioneering weather engineer Trevor James Constable; psychics Peter Hurkos and Lotte von Strahl, the latter who defied Adolph Hitler; the amazingly erudite Manley P. Hall; Brave New World and Doors of Perception author Aldous Huxley; Jess Stern; Yuri Geller; Christopher Isherwood; Neville; Gina Cerminara; John Lilley; Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass) of LSD fame; Sai Baba; Yogi Bajan, Los Angeles transplanted British witch Dame Sybil Leek; the controversial Werner Ehrhard of est fame; Dr. Brugh Joy; Countess Maria Graciette and her Creative Womanhood Foundation, which preceded the feminist movement (with whom Jeanne coauthored the book Astrology and Your Sex Life; even the diabolical Jim Jones of the ill-fated People’s Temple. We were exposed to the Theosophical Society, the Philosophical Society, Science of Mind, the Institute of Religious Science, Neville, Subud, Anthroposophy, Tibetan Buddhism, Kabbala, Tarot, Gurdjieff, Johrei, the Rosecrucians, the Martinists, the College of Hermetic Science, the Self-Realization Fellowship, the Disciples of Allen Kardec, Indian pow wows and sweat lodges, Tantra Yoga, Parmahansa Yogananda and the Self Realization Foundation (SRF), Vedanta, Reichian and Jungian therapy, A Course in Miracles, and many other movements too numerous to catalog that encouraged discernment and broadened perspective. Not to forget that Jeanne has thus far written two books (and plans additional ones) on the teachings of Dead Sea Scrolls translator Mary Dies Weddell: Planes of the Heavenworld and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Heaven But Didn’t Know Where to Ask.

From our spiritual journeys, we absorbed that which was meaningful, pursued what seemed most helpful and resonating. If Paris was a moveable feast in the 20's for artists and writers, Los Angeles was its spiritual equivalent in the 60's and 70's. Here, we were virtually surrounded by the bread of life, a true New Age banquet. And when we became bi-coastal, we enjoyed the best of both worlds.

*****

As we declared at the outset, this book is about astrology, love and sex, and in it we intend to broach as many elements of these subjects as astrology and our study of it permits, in order to give readers a better understanding of themselves as lovers. What kind of love or loves are we talking about? In English, the word love refers to a variety of feelings, states and attitudes, the diversity and complexity of which can make the word nearly impossible to define. Cultural differences exist in categorizing love; convictions and conventions about the subject have evolved and changed over time, so that the very word love can have different meanings in different contexts. While other languages use multiple words for these various concepts, English uses only the one word love, making a universal definition difficult to pinpoint.

The Greeks had four words for love; other languages have more than that. The philosophical work Narada Bhakti Sutras names eleven forms of love. Historically, the French differentiated between l’amour propre and l’amour passionné. C.S. Lewis’ classic work The Four Loves follows the Greek tradition, naming Storge, Phila, Eros and Agape each as a particular variety of love. Storge is a form of affection, fondness through familiarity; Phila is love in friendship, as existing between people who share common interests and bond; Eros is romance, being in love; while Agape is unconditional love.

The traditional psychological view in contemporary society holds the ideal of love being a combination of companionship and passion, an attachment of great friendship and great sex. Isn’t that what most people aspire to have and to hold? Experts tell us love has both a psychological and a chemical basis. A propos of the latter, lust, often a component of love, is passionate sexual desire that involves an increased release of the chemicals testosterone and estrogen. Studies in neuroscience indicate that as people fall in love, the brain releases important chemicals– pheromones, dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, which act in a manner similar to amphetamines, stimulating the brain's pleasure center. Attachment, a more lasting form of love than lust, has been linked to high levels of the chemicals oxytocin and vasopressin. Perhaps these highs are what we all seek as we pursue love, often blindly, whether we know it or not.

In viewing the many faces of love, we are confronted with a veritable overflowing cornucopia: need-love, erotic love, affection, passion, intimacy, lust, romance, attraction, attachment, commitment, compatibility, affinity, and so on. Active types of relationships are equally variegated: dating, courtship, engagement, monogamous marriage, open marriage, domestic partnership, cohabitation, shacking up; soul mate, significant other, main squeeze, partner, boyfriend/girlfriend; mistress/sugar daddy; fiancé/fiancée / same-sex relationship, ménage à trois, fuck buddy/balling buddy, bonding, love/hate; infidelity, breaking up, separation, divorce, remarriage. The love list continues. All these states and more are reflected in your astrological chart.

In the 21st century as before, sex continues as one of the most talked about subjects. Whether or not we have a sex life, we all have a sex drive, though certainly not everyone expresses it in the same manner. Some sublimate it, others
