Children’s Teacher - Vanessa Williams Snyder
Main Thought: But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. (1 Corinthians 15:20, NRSV)
UNIFYING PRINCIPLE
People need to be reminded of important events that shape their identities and actions. What kind of event can make such an influence on their lives? Jesus’ resurrection provided tangible evidence of the possibility of resurrection for those whose identity is formed by Christ Jesus.
BIBLICAL EMPHASES:
• Believers will live again because of Jesus’ resurrection.
• Paul referenced people who saw the risen Christ as proof of the resurrection.
• Without the resurrection of Jesus, Christians have no hope.
TARGET EMPHASES
PRESCHOOLERS: Children need reassurance that they are loved even when they make mistakes.
YOUNGER CHILDREN: Children enjoy sharing happy news with others.
OLDER CHILDREN: Children like to participate in happy celebrations.
LESSON OVERVIEW
The Apostle Paul wrote to the church of Corinth and encouraged them to continue to believe the message of the Gospel. Paul taught the Corinthians many principles of faith, but he said that this is the most important truth: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures
(vv. 3–4, NRSV). This is what comforts us in times of uncertainty, affliction, and even death.
The Corinthians had never seen Jesus and were removed both in time and culture from the crucifixion of Jesus. Thus, Paul was led by the Holy Spirit to provide the Corinthian church accounts of others who testified about Jesus. These people would support Paul’s message of Christ’s resurrection and would provide the Corinthians with other points of reference to the truth of Christ. Christ appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve [Disciples]. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time
(vv. 5–6, NRSV).
If we have accepted the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we also are to share our testimonies with those who do not know Christ. Because we have the Holy Spirit within us, our testimonies have the power to open the eyes of the spiritually blind so that they will see that Christ, the Son of God, has risen.
Faith in the resurrection of Jesus is essential to the life of a disciple. Paul wanted the Corinthian church to know that Jesus’ resurrection was only the beginning. Death came through one man, Adam, and through one man, Jesus, we have the resurrection of the dead. Every person who has Jesus’ Spirit within them will be made alive in Christ
(v. 22, NRSV). Death is not the end of our story; we will live forever in heaven.
This week, emphasize to your students the importance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Since He was raised from the dead, all people have hope of one day living again after death. But if Jesus had not risen from the dead, then they would be without hope. Also, since they have this Good News of Jesus’ resurrection, they should share this with others!

SUGGESTED TEACHING PLAN FOR GROWING WITH JESUS
1. GETTING STARTED: Greet each student as he or she enters the classroom. Select one student to open the class with a song and another student to say the opening prayer.
2. A GREAT BEGINNING: Explain that a tomb was like a cave in Jesus’ days. When He came out of the tomb, Jesus left it empty. Have the students help you make a cave
by draping the sheets over their tables. Allow each student to go into the cave before coming out and leaving it empty.
3. AN IMPORTANT LESSON: Ask the children if they have ever disobeyed their parents. Were they punished as a result of their disobedience? When Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they were punished by being sent out of the Garden of Eden. Even worse, they brought sin into the world! In order to fix this problem, God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins. But after three days, Jesus rose from the dead. Since Jesus did this, all men and women have the opportunity to spend eternity in heaven with Jesus. That makes the resurrection and Jesus’ empty tomb very
