Author

Rachel Renee Russell

Rachel Renee Russell is a lawyer who prefers writing children's books to legal briefs (mainly because books are a lot more fun and pyjamas and bunny slippers aren't allowed in court). She has raised two daughters and lived to tell about it. Rachel lives in northern Virginia with a spoiled pet Yorkie who terrorises her daily by climing on top of her computer and pelting her with stuffed animals while she writes. And, yes, Rachel considers herself a total Dork.

When she starts snooty prep school Westchester Country Day, Nikki is determined to be a super star. Unfortunately some things get in the way, like having a locker next to queen bee Mackenzie and getting a diary instead of the posh cell phone she was hoping for. In her diary, Nikki chronicles her misadventures as she tries to make friends and avoid embarrassment. This is perfect for girls who can't get enough Wimpy Kid!

Dork Diaries Tales from a NOT-SO-Fabulous Life is about a eighth grader who just transferred to a new school and she is trying to be a CCP (Cute,Cool, and Popular) girl, but, instead, she gets landed as the biggest dork in school. Nikki, the main character, has a locker right next to the biggest CCP diva in school, and she is struggling to find friendship, popularity, and courage. It is a bumpy road. I absolutely loved this book because a) I like graphic novels, and b) it is like a female version of Diary of a Wimpy kid, which I liked. Also, I kind of think a little bit like her.

I thought this would be the girl version of Diary of a Wimpy Kids (which I loved). What I found instead was a snarky and shallow character. I feel this book lacks the substance of Wimpy Kid. The girl seems grumpy, unhappy, and kind of mean all of the time. Contrasted with Greg from Wimpy kid who is balanced with fun and mischief...there's not much to laugh about here. My 11-year-old daughter likes it though.

I really liked the book there was a great tale and had ups and downs from a teenaged girl at high school. Niki (the main character) calls herself a dork and keeps a diary. With a mean bully life is not great and has to face many different problems. However i sometimes found that Niki goes on a little bit and I would just want to find out what happen. Over all a great book which I would recommend to anyone.

Some interesting stuff re: writing on the body and the protag.'s role as narrator, but otherwise merely an ok novel. I was mostly out off by the artwork, which seemed too perfect, and suggested more that a computer had drawn it than a human hand. Should be included on a syllabus, but make sure other GNs are, too.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" has a female counterpart. Nikki Maxwell attends a private middle school, thanks to the bug extermination work her father has done there. Nikki isn't CCP (cute, cool and popular) but she longs to be part of that crowd even though CCP-supreme Mackenzie treats her like dirt. After various failures and humiliations that Nikki hilariously and poignantly documents, she finds her niche with her art and some new friends much more suited to her personality. Young teenage girls will identify with Nikki's chatty, OMG! tone and her typical-teen insecurities.

This graphic novel is the first in a series, told from a middle school girl's point of view. I'd recommend it to grades 8 and up, though, as it describes what sounds more like a high school (dissecting frogs in biology, for example). Some of the references are already dated, too (pubbed in 2009, and younger students won't get them all. However, the voice of a preteen/teen was completely realistic. Made me laugh and cry and I think students (in honesty, girls) will totally relate to the main character.

Wow, do I want to bash Nikki's head in. She is extremely self-centered and annoying. Really, REALLY annoying. I don't get how my kids can like this.

I have heard this book for some many years now and never thought to read it. This book is really funny and their are so many puns in the book that I don't think I even found them all. The hand-drawn pictures in the book make this book that much better because it gives the author more time to develop the story than to describe a setting. I was shocked to find that this book does contain bullying, however, it's not that bad. After reading this book, I am stocked to read the other books in the series.

This book is hysterical and filled with drama for days. This book is different from others in the series because two different characters write. The author gives these two characters different personalities making it so simple to imagine what goes down. I recommend this book for girls ages 9-13 years old.

My rating may be unfair because I'm not the target audience, which, according to the back of the book, is ages 9-13. But the local elementary school librarian said her husband found the book to be laugh-out-loud. The main character starts attending a private school, where she feels like an outsider, but thanks to her artistic talent and genuineness and niceness she succeeds. I wondered what would have happened if she weren't good at drawing temporary tatoos on students and if the ink would make people ill. As I said, I'm not the target audience.

In this story Nikki has a total Ms.Perfect enemy: Mackenzie. Nikki has a horrible life that gets worse and worse everyday when she is in school or where ever she is! Nikki enters into an art compatition but her painting gets smashed and Nikki thinks Mackenzie will win it so she doesn't go to school. At last her friends take photos of the tattoes that Nikki drew and enter it in the compatition. Guess what? Nikki wins.

Really, a 2 1/2. This series is quite popular with the middle grade girls at my school... Diary of a Wimpy Kid gone female. And it has plenty of funny moments, but it just kind of lost credibility for me when I discovered that Nikki is supposed to be 14 years old. I just couldn't buy it... her fixation on the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana would have been believable in an 11- or 12-year-old narrator, maybe, but not 14. The references to trendy pop stars who are trendy no longer have already dated the first title in the series, and Russell just seems to try too hard with WAY too many OMGs and other chatter that is supposed to sound like today's young teen but instead just sounds kind of exhausting. Eh.

I read this book at least five times and im still not tired of reading it! Nikki is a dork. McKenzie, a popular snob, is ruining her life. Nikki is trying to survive. Brandon, her love might be in love with McKenzie. Everythings a mess when Nikki trys out for the art compatition, but then McKenzie trys out and makes everything think she going to win. But Nikki ends up winning! She has a reward for winning, what is she going to spend it on?

This book is great! I found myself laughing out loud at the entries that Nikki puts in her diary. I can remember having those same thoughts as a middle school girl. The content is approachable for kids because it is written in language they they will understand but also introduces new vocabulary. Perfect book for young adolescent girls.

Picked it up because the pictures were cute. It reminded me of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. But, I kind of like this more. The story is about a girl in Middle school having to deal with the drama of the cool kids. The story was good. Loved the characters. The pictures reminded me a little of anime, loved that. Overall, it was really enjoyable.

Dork Diaries earns my approval for middle –school readers. In this book, 14 year-old Nikki Maxwell conveys her daily problems of being the new kid at a rich, private school through her diary. The author narrates the story through the words and drawing of Nikki. I first grabbed this book because the main character and I share the same name (even the same spelling of it); however, at by the end of the book I realized how much I enjoyed the humor that the author uses to tell Nikki’s story. With that said, I am not sure if the language truly reflects how 14 year-olds talk. While I enjoyed having the story told through the literary talent of a young teenager, I thought the illustrations really made the whole really come together. Though I have not read any of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series yet (it is on my to-read list), this book seems like it would be comparable to that series. I will let you know. In general, I recommend this book; especially if readers enjoy series because this is only book one.

This is a great book to read. Dork Diaries is a book about Nikki's new life in a private school in 8th grade. In the book there is a popular mean girl named Makenzie and her BFF Jessica. In the book she befriends with two girls named Chole and Zoey. She experiences lots of problems being the biggest dork in school. I really enjoy this book. You can always get great books to read in your local bookstore. :)

Dork Diaries 9 - Rachel Renee Russell

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2

The past twenty-four hours of my life have been so disgustingly NAUSEATING that I’m actually starting to feel like a . . . puddle of . . . um, cat . . . VOMIT!!

First I ruined my brand-new sweater with a PBJ and pickle sandwich (a long story).

Then I got hit in the face by a dodgeball during gym in front of the ENTIRE class and ended up trapped in a wacky fairy tale (an even longer story!).

Okay, I can handle the utter HUMILIATION of walking around school OBLIVIOUS to the fact that a SANDWICH is stuck to my abdomen like duct tape.

Hey, I can even handle a mild concussion. However, what I CAN’T handle is the fact that someone started an AWFUL rumor about me!

I overheard two CCP (Cute, Cool & Popular) girls gossiping about it in the bathroom.

Rumor has it that my CRUSH kissed me (at a charity event last weekend) on a DARE merely to snag a FREE large pizza from Queasy Cheesy!

Of course I totally FREAKED when I heard it! Not only is a dare like that rude and insensitive, but it’s a very cruel joke to play on a person like . . . well . . . ME!

I was SURE the whole thing was a big fat LIE! Sorry! But everyone knows Queasy Cheesy pizzas are just NASTY! Had it been a dare for a yummy Crazy Burger, I’d TOTALLY believe it!

Hey, I’ll be the first to admit, that rumor could have been A LOT worse. But STILL . . . !! I just wish someone would stay out of my personal business. And by someone, I mean my mortal enemy . . . MACKENZIE HOLLISTER !!

I don’t know why that girl HATES MY GUTS! It wasn’t MY fault Principal Winston gave her a three-day detention for unsportsmanlike behavior for slamming me in the face with that dodgeball.

I’m really LUCKY I’m not in a COMA right now! Or undergoing life-threatening surgery . . .

Anyway, as punishment for what MacKenzie did to me, she has to clean the bug-infested showers in the girls’ locker room.

Unfortunately, I learned today that the bug problem in there is REALLY bad!!

I was sitting behind MacKenzie in French class finishing up my homework when I noticed there was something stuck in her hair.

At first I thought it was one of those fancy designer barrettes she loves to wear. But when I took a closer look, I realized it was actually a gigantic dead STINK BUG!! EWW !!

That’s when I tapped her on the shoulder. Um, MacKenzie! Excuse me, but I just wanted to let you know that—

Nikki, WHY are you even talking to me?! Just mind your OWN business! she said, glaring at me like I was something her spoiled poodle, Fifi, had left in the grass in her backyard.

MACKENZIE, GLARING AT ME IN A VERY RUDE MANNER!

Okay! Then I won’t tell you there’s a huge dead STINK BUG in your hair! I said very calmly. Besides, it kinda looks like an ugly barrette! And it totally complements your eye color!

WHAT?! MacKenzie gasped, and her eyes got as big as saucers.

She whipped out her makeup mirror.

OMG! OMG! There’s a big black . . . INSECT with prickly legs tangled in my golden tresses! EEEEEEEEEEEK!!! she shrieked. Then she started jumping around hysterically and shaking her hair to get it out. She had a complete meltdown!

You’re making it worse. Now it’s even more tangled in there. Just sit down and chillax! I said as I grabbed a tissue and reached for her hair.

GET AWAY FROM ME!! she screamed. I don’t want TWO disgusting CREATURES in my beautiful hair!

Stop acting like a spoiled BRAT! I shot back. I’m just removing the bug for you! See?!"

ME, REMOVING THE STINK BUG FROM MACKENZIE’S HAIR

That is DISGUSTING! Get it away from me!

You’re welcome! I said, glaring at her.

Hmph! Don’t expect a thank-you from me! It’s all YOUR fault that bug was in my hair! It’s probably from those nasty showers I’m being forced to clean.

Suddenly she folded her arms and narrowed her eyes at me.

Or maybe YOU put it in my hair to try to ruin my reputation! I bet you want everyone to think my house is overrun with disgusting bugs! Again.

MacKenzie, I think your lip gloss must be leaking into your brain. That’s ridiculous!

How could you put that nasty BUG in my hair?! I’m getting SICK just thinking about it. UGH!!

Then she covered her mouth and mumbled something. But I couldn’t understand a word. . . .

ME, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT MACKENZIE WAS SAYING!

Although we were in French class, it definitely didn’t sound like she was speaking French!

By the time I FINALLY figured out what she was saying, it was TOO late.

Desperate, she took off running toward the wastebasket at the front of the room.

But, unfortunately, she DIDN’T make it.

I could NOT believe that MacKenzie Hollister, the QUEEN of the CCPs, actually threw up in front of the ENTIRE French class!

She was like a bad car accident! I really DIDN’T want to see her covered in puke from head to toe ! But I couldn’t help staring !

I have never seen her SO embarrassed. SO humiliated. SO vulnerable. SO um . . . MESSY!

I was both shocked and surprised when I was suddenly overcome with overwhelming emotion.

I had NEVER, EVER felt more SORRY for a human being in my ENTIRE life! . . .

POOR CHUCK THE JANITOR!! HE HAS A REALLY DIRTY JOB!

It seemed like such a grave injustice that HE had to clean up the horrible mess that MacKenzie had made.

Sometimes life is SO UNFAIR !!

But he took his job very seriously because he actually put on one of those paper mask thingies that doctors wear during surgery.

I’m guessing it was probably because of the very noxious and excessive . . . STINKAGE!

Anyway, our French teacher immediately sent MacKenzie down to the office to call her parents to go home for the rest of the day.

And instead of having class in our smelly, contaminated room, our teacher took us down to the library to quietly study our French vocabulary words.

Which was PERFECT for me because I was able to work on my special project for National Library Week later this month.

My BFFs, Chloe and Zoey, and I held a book drive for our school back in September, and it was a HUGE success.

So now we’re planning an even bigger one for National Library Week!

We’ll also be traveling to NYC for a book festival and will get to Meet-n-Greet some of our favorite authors. SQUEEEEEEE!!!

Anyway, I can’t believe MacKenzie ACTUALLY thinks I put that stink bug in her hair!!

Unfortunately for her, it looks like the kids in our class are already GOSSIPING about what happened.

One girl had her cell phone out. She showed it to a guy, and then they started snickering like crazy.

I guessed that she was probably texting the ENTIRE school!

But this whole thing is all MacKenzie’s fault!!

She totally OVERREACTED and FREAKED OUT even after I offered to help her.

MacKenzie is such a VOMIT QUEEN!

OOPS! I meant . . .

DRAMA QUEEN!

Sorry about that, MacKenzie!!

!!

THURSDAY, APRIL 3

I’m SO upset right now I can barely write !! I was at my locker, minding my own business, when MacKenzie tapped me on my shoulder and sneered, Why are YOU always hanging around here?!! PLEASE! Just go away!

Sorry, but I hang around here because, unfortunately, MY locker is right next to YOURS, I said, rolling my eyes at her.

I still can’t believe you put that bug in my hair! I’ll NEVER speak to you again as long as I live!!

Whatever, MacKenzie! I muttered as I counted down in my head for her to start blabbing at me again. Five . . . four . . . three . . . two . . .

You’re MAD at me because I spilled the beans that Brandon kissed you on a DARE just to get a free pizza! And now everyone is gossiping about it. So to get even, you PRETENDED to be injured in gym class just to get ME in trouble! . . .

NIKKI, YOU’RE JUST A PATHETIC FAKE!

Sorry, but I could only take so much of Miss Thang talking TRASH right to my face like that! So I got all up in HER face and said . . .

Really, MacKenzie?! You think I’M faking?!! Does this BRUISE look FAKE to you?! I don’t think so! The ONLY fake things around here, girlfriend, are YOUR bad hair extensions and tacky spray-on tan!!

ME, SHOWING MACKENZIE MY BRUISE

Poor baby! So, I’m supposed to feel guilty when I actually did you a big FAVOR? MacKenzie snarled. "That cute little bruise I gave
