  This is yet another children's book that is simply an illustrated version of a song's lyrics. The song in question this time is John Lennon's "Imagine." The illustrations feature a pigeon who delivers the proverbial olive branch to other birds, who begin to join her/him in peace and unity. It would have been nicer if the book had kept to the spirit of the song and not necessarily every line word for word. Phrases like "imagine there's no countries" and "nothing to kill or die for" don't really resonate with the young audience this is intended for, as they don't fully grasp the concepts of nationalism or mortality yet. While I like the sentiment, I can't really imagine sharing this book with young ones without tons of explanation about what the words mean (or the alternative of it just going over their heads completely). I think die-hard Beatles/Lennon fans will enjoy this book, but otherwise I don't think it really lives up to the hype.

  A picture-book presentation of John Lennon's famous song, with the artwork of expatriate French illustrator Jean Jullien, Imagine depicts a pigeon flying the world, proverbial olive branch in beak, seeking to unite the birds of the world into one peaceful community...A project done in partnership with Amnesty International, this picture-book contains a forward by Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, and is meant to highlight the importance of peaceful coexistence and human rights. I'm not really a great fan of picture-books whose text is simply a presentation of a famous song, as such titles often lack any coherent sense of story, or narrative. Here, the effect is rather contemplative though, and I did enjoy Jullien's artwork, done in brush and ink, and then completed digitally. Recommended primarily to John Lennon fans, or to those looking to introduce the concept of worldwide peace to the picture-book set.
