About this ebook

Often Christians are meant to feel like they need to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to science, logic and reason. Faith is seen as the polar opposite of reason, intelligence and logic. There is nothing further from the truth. Faith is in fact driven by logic and reason. God created the universe billions of years ago in the Big Bang and created the never changing laws of the universe. This book defends the Christian Faith from the perspective of God being the God of science, reason, logic and intelligence. Humility is emphasized as the way to see God's revelations to humanity in creation events and in the words/actions of Jesus Christ. It follows the Faith journey of Christian who drifted into humanism but was born again into the Christian Faith through logic and reason.

FAITH: Facts And Intelligence Together Humble
Author

Patrick Hoffmann

Patrick is not a professional writer nor a trained minister. He is, in fact, a CPA and a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. He is a married father of one daughter and enjoys his classic mustang convertible. He prides himself on being a humble amateur apologist. Not being formally educated in theology, Patrick uses a common sense approach to apologetics. Using logic brought him to Jesus Christ so his writings focus more on facts and logic than emotion.

    Acknowledgments

This book is dedicated to my loving family. Leslie, who is my loving wife, has always been my biggest supporter. Kelsie, our beautiful daughter, completed our family and gave me the courage to write this book.

My faith journey would not have been as wonderful without my church family at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in St. Charles Illinois and its wise and loving pastor, Timothy Silber. Along the journey, Pastor Alistair Begg’s ministry and teaching, guided me to see God’s love and revelations.

I am nothing without Jesus Christ, who never gave up on me. I will forever be His humble servant.

Chapter 1: Faith and Science Re-examined

This book is about how God and Science/Logic are not mutually exclusive. Since God is often associated with the word Faith and the physical world is associated with the word Science, it makes sense to define both of these words up front. It will be become evident that the definitions of these words lead to the notion that God and Science do not share any common ground. One of the goals of this book is to re-define faith as it relates to religion or God. A new definition is needed to break down the wall that popular society has built between God and Science.

Faith is defined by Freedictionary.com as Belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence. Merriam-Webster.com defines faith as Firm belief in something for which there is no proof. Faith, in popular culture, is often used as an emotional plug. The idea is If you can’t explain it --- use faith as the answer. Faith is often seen as the absence of logic. A phrase that is often heard concerning faith is, I know there is no proof or logic but I just have faith! Since faith is associated with religious beliefs, any religious beliefs have become synonymous with believing the unbelievable. In effect faith, and by extension religion, is the absence of facts. To believe in God or to have faith in God is equivalent to believing in a fairy tale. By associating faith with belief in God, popular culture has separated God from facts.

Now let us look at definitions of Science. Merriam-Webster.com defines science as knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observations. The Freedictionary.com defines science as knowledge of facts gained by systematic study. Science is based on facts and what is proven. Popular culture has concretely tied science to facts. Based on this linkage (science is based on facts) then science defines truth (and what is believable). Science is based on truth and science also defines what is the truth and factual. I think we can start to see the contrast between these 2 definitions but let us look at them side by side.

    FAITH

    Belief not based on logical/proof

Belief in something with no proof

    Lacking of Truth/Facts

    Lack of knowledge/being ignorant

    SCIENCE

    Knowledge of facts

    Facts based on systematic study

    Defines facts and truth

    Full of knowledge and wisdom

Looking at these 2 words just from the widely held cultural definitions, it is very logical to conclude that faith and science are polar opposites. They are antonyms according to the above. With faith associated with God, it is clear that according to these definitions, God and science do not belong together. As we have defined science uses facts and observations to define the truth while faith and God center on the lack of proof and logic. Based on this idea, it is clear why a popular notion in our society is that there are 2 mutually exclusive camps – the fact based science camp and the faith based God camp. People are seen as either a person of science/facts/truth or faith/God/myths.

Put in simple terms, since science has all the facts and answers, there is no room for God. It is widely believed that science can answer all questions and defines the truth so why even discuss God? There is a flaw in this belief and stems from the foundation that the belief is built on. That flaw rests in the belief that science can answer all questions and that the scientific method / experiments can answer all questions. I know what many people are thinking at this time So this is where the book spins into a creationist fairy tale that bashes science and insults intelligent people?

This could not be further from the truth. This book shows the utmost respect for science and the awesome beauty of the precision of the universe. The main objective is to show that using all that we have learned from the universe, there are several fundamental questions that science can’t ever answer. Logic can be used to determine the most likely answers but we will address that later in the book. The book is meant to open minds once there is a realization that science coupled with logic leads to a definitive answer to the fundamental questions of life. Hopefully this book will encourage you to explore the origins of the universe and life using the facts and following the pathway of nature, science and logic. I believe that logic, intelligence and science are on the side of a Creator God. After reading this book, I hope you would come to see Faith as beliefs supported by facts and logic. Faith believes in the most logical answer to a question that can’t be answered by observations or the scientific method. Faith is merely drawing the conclusion that science, facts and logic leads to. Denying the most logical conclusion is to deny logic itself.

Chapter 2: Big Bang is Correct….Up to a Point

For a long time scientists believed that the universe was eternal. It had no beginning and was infinite. This model for the universe was called the static state model. Albert Einstein in his early career was a believer in the static model. This model also fit well into a Godless universe since without a beginning there is no need for a creator or a creation event. Theists argued that God could still exist in this static model since God was also infinite. In effect, the theists had a parallel story to the scientific
