      Preface

      It takes a long time to learn something, but it takes only a short time to forget it. The consolation is that you can learn the material faster and more easily the second time around. Some of the information remains in your memory and you just need to be reminded. Math can be like this.

      This book was written for people who took basic math in high school, but have forgotten some of the operations and want to brush up on their math skills. Over the last several years, the first edition of this book helped many different types of people. There have been those who were preparing to take a math test of various sorts, whether to return to school or as a part of employment. It also has been successfully used by parents to help their children with their math homework.

      A couple of years ago, I received a letter from a reader that was especially memorable. It was written by a woman who was in the process of changing careers. The only hitch was that she needed to pass a basic math test in order to start her new career. She read this book, did the practice problems, and wrote, This week I found out I passed the test and was accepted to the course. I am confident, despite a very ‘fancy’ education that I could not have passed the test without your excellent, thoughtful, easy-to-understand, step-by-step, patient and pain-free book. Thank you so very much for helping me achieve a lifelong goal.

      The goal of this book is to give you a concise and understandable review of basic math so that you can accomplish your goal, whatever it may be. This second edition of Basic Math Refresher includes the addition of a glossary for quick reference. The calculations in this book are meant to be carried out with a simple hand calculator, although they can be done with paper and pencil.

      Chapter 1

      Addition

      Addition is the adding of two or more numbers together. The result is called the sum. Here are some examples.

      A family wants to go out to the movie theater. Movie tickets sell for $9.50 for adults and $4.75 for children. Popcorn is $5.00. Candy costs $2.25 a box. How much will it cost for one adult with two children to go to the movies if they buy two popcorns and one box of candy?

      EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM 2

      A carpenter wants to install crown wood molding around the perimeter of a window that is 48 inches tall and 108 inches long. How many total inches of molding does the carpenter need?

      EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM 3

      The library at a major university owns 1,247,606 books. A government grant is allowing the library to purchase 235,000 additional books. Further, a private donation from an alumni member will fund the purchase of 50,500 more books. How many books will the library own all together?

      EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM 4

      A small farm in the Central Valley grows table grapes. It has been in business for four years. The first year, it produced 30,196 pounds of grapes. The second year, it produced 31,842 pounds of grapes. The third year, it produced 26,128 pounds of grapes. The fourth year, it produced 34,243 pounds of grapes. How many pounds of grapes has this farm produced?

      At You-Build-It computer store, you save money on labor because you build your own computer. A central processing unit costs $875. A monitor costs $225. A mouse costs $25. A mouse pad costs $5. A pair of speakers costs $45. A modem costs $35, and a keyboard costs $40. What is the total cost for a complete computer?

      EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM 6

      Big Al’s Car Dealership has 227 cars on their lot. They expect to buy 60 more cars at an auction next week. They are also waiting on the delivery of 75 cars that the owner, Big Al, purchased on an out of town buying trip. In addition, another 53 cars are expected to arrive shortly from a cross-county dealership. When he gets them all together, how many cars will Big Al have?

      EXAMPLE WORD PROBLEM 7

      A real-estate development company wants to build an office building. They buy a piece of property in the downtown area for $2,175,000. A short time later, the company purchases the property next to it for $1,500,000 and the one to next that for $1,950,000. Then, the company paid construction costs of $6,000,000 to have the offices built. What is the total amount of money invested?

      1. A camper bought the following camping equipment: a tent for $105, a sleeping bag for $82, a lantern for $36, a camping stove for $48, a tarp for $22, an axe for $27, a flashlight for $9, and some cookware for $15. What was the total cost?

      2. A circus show performs five days a week. On Wednesday, the show had 8,632 visitors. On Thursday, it had 4,170 visitors. On Friday, it had 3,937 visitors. On Saturday, it had 5,472 visitors. On Sunday, it had 4,622 visitors. How many visitors did the circus get this week?

      3. A five-person family used 14,586 gallons of water in January. They used 12,529 gallons in February, 10,799 in March, and 11,791 in April. How may total gallons of water did this family use over this four-month period?

      4. A landscape management company is designing several yards around a home owned by one of its customers. Because of the shape of the lot, they will need to bring in some topsoil. The architect estimates that the back yard will need 1,200 cubic feet of soil. The front yard needs 320 cubic feet of soil. There are also two side yards. One will need 225 cubic feet of soil, while the other will need 200. What is the total number of cubic feet of soil that this project requires?

      5. A real-estate broker sold a luxury house for $1,350,000. The new owner has agreed to pay the sales commission, which is $40,500. The mortgage fee is $1,000. In addition, repairs to the property, prior
