      INTRODUCTION

      The broad selection of fine carriages shown in this 1862 catalog of Lawrence, Bradley & Pardee not only represents the line of one of New Haven’s best-known carriage manufacturers, but shows as well practically all of the types of carriages that were popular in America at the time. Successors of the famed James Brewster, who initially gave the city its reputation as a carriage-building center, the three partners were not long to continue their association. In 1868, the original Brewster partner—John R. Lawrence—sold his interest to Bradley and Pardee, and in 1871 Pardee sold out to Bradley. After a few years, Bradley was forced to suspend operations. But a short time later, in about 1873, he sold the property to A. T. Demarest, who again succeeded in turning the factory into one of the city’s leading establishments, at times employing as many as 200 men. In 1915, A. T. Demarest & Co., now engaged in both carriage and automobile work, ceased to exist.

      This catalog was originally published at a time when the initial effects of the American industrial revolution were first being felt by the carriage industry. While some rather basic machinery had come into use in the industry as early as the 1830s and 1840s, and infrequent instances of parts manufacture could be found even earlier, the construction of a carriage still involved a great deal of highly skilled hand labor. This is borne out by a writer in The Hub, who wrote in 1897, Twenty-five years ago one of the questions that was agitating the trade was, can machinery, other than for sawing, be used to an advantage in the carriage shop? [A]nd the consensus of opinion was that it could not, except where the capacity of the factory was such as to require four fires at least in the blacksmith shop.

      Prior to 1862, wheel-making machinery had come into use, which certainly shaved the price of wheels, and consequently of carriages. Yet the gradual decrease in price that resulted from improved methods of mass production
