    It would have been the perfect autumn morning. The sun sparkled between the limbs of the trees bringing sporadic light to the fallen leaves that now made up the forest’s floor. Animals scampered around, frolicking with one another or hunting for food, the deer and squirrels and rabbits looking like their happy counterparts in Disney movies. Even the birds sang at their best, often times floating out across the top of the glittering lake, spreading their wings and gliding on to the other side of the water where they found another temporary perch on a tree branch.

    It would have been the perfect autumn morning, but it wasn’t. What ruined the mood of the season were the pair of helicopters bobbing around overhead, the hundred or more men and women in uniform, each carrying rifles or shotguns as they scoured through the woods, and of course the dozens of law enforcement vehicles zooming along the highways and the gravel roads cutting through the region.

    Dutch watched all of this with binoculars from a ridge not far from the Bible camp. Wearing camouflage clothing and gear, he blended in well with his surroundings. Even his slouched hat and the rifle on the ground near his hand had been colored in greens and browns and grays. Only his tan face and the black of the pistol on his belt held onto other than natural colors.

    Watching a line of a dozen state patrol officers slowly make their way around a pile of brush, he lowered the binoculars and stuffed them inside a pack attached to his belt.

    He remained kneeling during all of this, his only movements those that were absolutely necessary. Movement had a tendency to draw the eye, even
