    Help - Maarten Van Nus

    About the Author

Maarten Van Nus, author and founder of BoomerBody Fitness, has been training and studying the human body since 1975. He’s seen fitness trends come and go and he’s guided hundreds of people to train their bodies and minds past their self-made limitations to achieve their personal fitness and health goals.

Maarten has spent thousands of hours in the gym using his own body as a test case to create and perfect new and exciting ways to train and isolate muscle groups, strengthen the core, stretch to relieve acute and chronic injuries, and improve overall health. Maarten lives what he teaches and, thus, understands what his clients must overcome to create the fitness and health of which they have always dreamed.

Maarten trains everyone from homemakers to top executives, from weekend gym warriors to semi-pro bodybuilders. He uses unique techniques that bring the mind into play so that his clients achieve their desired results on the outside and – more importantly – on the inside, where the key to maintaining fitness and health resides in the deep beliefs we hold about ourselves.

Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success, states that it takes ten thousand hours of practice to become a master at anything and Maarten Van Nus surpassed that mark long ago. That’s why he’s known as a master, a guru, a triple PhD, if you will, when it comes to training the human body. Let his expertise help you achieve your best by reading Help: I’m Being Held Prisoner by My Couch! and learning more about his techniques at BoomerBody.ca.

    Introduction

Get the inside right and the outside will take care of itself.

    Eckhart Tolle

This is not your typical exercise book. If you are looking for a typical exercise book, look somewhere else.

But if you are looking for a book that will help you face the things that have been holding you back from starting or reaching your personal fitness goals, a book that gives you techniques, training tips, and solid, real eating suggestions to help propel you off the couch to reach your ideal weight or attain your fitness & health goals and take you further than you ever thought possible, then this is the book for you!

My motto in health and fitness has always been, What finish line?

I still find great joy and personal satisfaction in pushing myself to do things that at one time or another I thought I could never do. That’s my path! My hope is that, while reading these pages, you will find your own path, the one that feels right for you.

I started on my journey in 1975 and since then, I have seen the fitness industry go through many changes, from the peddling of each new fitness craze to the hype of each fad DIEt. And, no, this is not a typo. I spell the word DIEt this way to show you the significance of the first three, very true, letters of the word: DIE, Fad DIEts are killing our bodies!

And don’t get me started on all those supplements that make outrageous claims, such as rock-hard abs in just 10 days, or a perfect beach body in 17 days, or my favorite, Add 15 pounds of solid lean muscle in just 5 workouts. I’m sorry to break it to you, but it just doesn’t happen like that.

There is one true constant, however. One thing that is absolutely true for every single person. It can lead either to self-sabotage or, if used correctly, to empowerment. It is something we humans all do – both consciously and unconsciously – from birth. It is how each of us thinks, feels, sees, and speaks about ourselves – it is our self-image.

On my fitness journey I have discovered, tried, and tested everything in this book and I live by it. I have always had my own internal stand against what society would have us believe about the human body, its aging, and what it is capable of.

It is my deepest wish that you take your best shot at what is presented in this book. Do not give up on yourself because, no matter what you think now, you are worth it.

By the end of this book I sincerely hope and believe that, "I am worth it," will be your own battle cry as you push toward being the most healthy and happy you that you can be!

    Yours in health and fitness,

    Maarten Van Nus

    Chapter 1:      Using this Book

Help: I’m Being Held Prisoner By My Couch! is divided into 6 Sections. Each of the first 5 sections covers one of the 5 Keys to unlocking the prison that keeps you from caring for yourself better than you do.

The final section provides information and tips on how to keep using the Keys to stay free of your prison and reach your personal goals. Many of us have more than one cell in which we are trapped. It is important to address each of them over time.

    Prisons

You will see the term prison often in this book. For our purposes, a prison is created by any reason or belief that stops you from being as healthy and happy as imaginable. It’s possible that your prison may have more than one cell – each cell represents a major belief or reason that stops you from caring for yourself – and each can be opened using the 5 Keys in this book.

We all have understandings and beliefs that govern our decisions, interpretations, and behaviors during every situation. We have built these understandings from what we have seen reflected back to us from the world and how we feel inside. We have built them from our understanding of societal norms and how we feel we measure up against them. We have absorbed them from our family, friends, and authority figures.

Some of these beliefs and understandings are – quite simply – wrong. In order to become healthy and fit, whether we ever have been or not, each of us must understand why we have not been taking care of ourselves properly.

It is only once we understand why we aren’t trying to be as healthy as possible that we will be free to actually become healthy.

Even those of you with chronic illnesses and injuries can be as healthy and fit as possible, which makes you happier every day, despite your challenges.

Discovering your prison, re-examining the understandings and beliefs you have, and determining new ones to free yourself from the chains that bind you is a critical part of our BoomerBody techniques and, we believe, it is critical part of life.

We want to help you by providing 5 Keys to help unlock the prison that is keeping you from being fit.

5 Keys to Unlocking Your Prison

There are essentially 5 Keys to unlock the prison in which we come to live and which keep us from being healthy and self-preserving when it comes to exercise and nutrition. Each of the first 5 sections of this book addresses one of the Keys, and they are ordered sequentially.

    1st Key:     Discover Your Prison

    2nd Key:    Re-Think Your Prison & Yourself

3rd Key:     Take Action & Persevere

4th Key:     Stay Focused on You, Not the Prison

5th Key:     Think, Talk, & Act Positively

You should work through the Keys at your own pace. Don’t rush. And, be sure to return to them every time you feel yourself locked into or starting to become locked into something unhealthy or undesirable.

Grab the Keys & Get Going

The final section of the book provides an overview of nutrition and exercise practices that help you on your path to being healthy and fit. You may read them in any order you like – and you may want to look at some or all of them while you’re working through the Keys – If so, we recommend looking at the Nutrition chapters first.

There you will find information about healthy food choices, the importance of water, the critical factor that pH levels play in our health, and BoomerBody techniques and practices that will give you an edge in your new exercise practices.

Now, let’s get started on examining your prison and unlocking those cell doors to escape from it.

Chapter 2:      Who Am I & Why Should You Listen To Me?

Don’t let your past leak all over your present because what leaks tends to reek.

    Dõv Baron

Before we go any further, I would like to take some time to tell you a little about me and why I am passionate about freeing people from their prisons (we’ll get into what those prisons specifically are a little later).

As a young boy growing up in the ‘60s in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), Canada known as Surrey, there wasn’t much in the way of gyms or physical activity of any kind. But I would see those old Charles Atlas ads at the back of my comic books – you know the ones – showing
