Travels in South India - Archana Moro

    Prologue

Well its Christmas time again which means it’s time for Vacation. This time we hadn’t planned any vacation, as an alternative we decided to do a road trip and discover Karnataka.

We were to start the trip just after my father-in-law’s 60th birthday celebrations. Though celebrations are always fun, they bring exhaustion and tiredness along with them. The plan was set for both the celebrations and the vacation. Neither of them was to block the other. The idea was to finish the packing before the festivity began, however that did not happen. Forget completing the packing we hadn’t even started arranging stuff. The day before we had to start on the trip it dawned upon us that there was so much to do for our trip. The car had to be checked, the maps had to be taken in case there are no networks in remote places, call up several people, a lot of things to be purchased, in short a long listed awaited our attention, but the energy and enthusiasm within us motivated us to finish up the pending tasks and finally pack our bags to get set go.

    The groundwork

The road trip was planned for 7 days starting on the 24th of December and ending on 30th December. Karnataka is a state with diversified terrain. Where there are beautiful beaches on one side, there are huge, lush mountains on the other. To complement the mountains are the spiritual temples and varied culture to emphasize the diversity in nature and people. Accordingly the plan was to cover wildlife, hills and mountain ranges, temples and beaches.

Staying in different types of accommodation was also part of the plan to experience the place and stay in a very rustic way.

However we could not avoid the last minute changes to the plan as the Forest Department decided to cancel our booking at one of the wildlife guest houses. This compelled us to drop the wildlife visit and to compensate this loss we decided to relax at a home stay and enjoy the hospitability of the people in the hills.

I have split this book into 4 chapters based on the terrains we covered. A quick preview of the places we covered and stayed is given below.

Places covered are shown in the map

On a close look at the places marked on the map, you can see that from completely enclosed city, I was making a journey to the more colorful side of the state with greenery on one side and blue sea on the other.

    Glamour of Western Ghats

    Sakleshpura

The preparation for the trip went all the way till 12 in the night on 23rd. This had its effect in starting the trip. We were able to start from Bangalore on 24th only at 9 after having breakfast at home. When a trip starts late in the day, the enthusiasm dips to certain levels. This made us think for a while as to whether we should postpone the trip to 25th but not wanting to waste a day because of delay
