3.75 starsGrace was bitten by wolves when she was 11 years old. She recovered, but for the past 6 years, she has had a fascination with one of the wolves, who she still sees in the woods behind her house. When a boy at school is killed by wolves, Grace is worried for them, as she doesn't want them hurt. Sam is human and a wolf; he changes with the cold or heat. He has been watching Grace, even as a wolf, ever since she was bitten. With people now afraid of the wolves, and now that he (as a human) has met Grace, he doesn't want to turn back into a wolf, but he's not sure how long he can hold it off. It was a little slow to start, but I thought it really picked up in the second half. I quite liked it, and plan to continue the trilogy. It had a bit of a different take on werewolves, with the heat vs. cold as an example, so that was kind of interesting, too.

The premise: Grace was attacked by a gang of wolves when she was a child, but one wolf saved her. That wolf, a werewolf named Sam, returned every winter to keep watch over her, but always disappeared in the summer. Years later, when the wolves attack and kill a boy at Grace's school, Sam shows up on her doorstep needing help. But Sam isn't a wolf, he's human, and it's not the change of the moon that forces the change, but the change in temperature. Shiver is, beyond a doubt, a love story between a human girl who may not be so human after all, and a boy who'd do anything to stay human so that he can be with her.My RatingBuy the Paperback: this is, first and foremost, a love story, and the couple is too sweet and almost too perfect to allow for much conflict. The book could've been shorter in terms of conflict alone, but if you like the characters, it's sweet watching them interact, especially since they have such a limited time together. The writing is solid, at times lovely, and I didn't consider it purple, though some have accused it of being so (some of those same people say Meyer's prose ISN'T purple, and I tend to disagree with that too). It reads fast, but by the end, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions which has me wondering if I want to pick up the sequel, Linger when it comes out next year. I think I may, but it'll thoroughly depend on what kind of mood I'm in at the time. In the end, I think I would've rather waited on the paperback. My werewolf fetish was happy enough, but I didn't tear through this like I thought I might. Of course, I didn't tear through Stiefvater's Lament either, and while some people say that book was better, I'm not sure. Better in conflict, sure, but I think it boils down to whether or not you prefer faeries or werewolves. I prefer werewolves, and while Stiefvater's writing is enjoyable and I liked certain elements of the story (namely, a heroine who's smart enough to save herself toward the end), I'm not in love with Stiefvater's work. Not yet. There's definitely promise though, but I do wish she'd move away from the "heroine falls in love with supernatural boy" plot. She did it in Lament and she does it here. It'd be nice to see her try something a wee bit different (and not "HERO falls in love with supernatural HEROINE" different either). :) Review style: Stream of conscious, because there are points worth discussing and there will be spoilers. If spoilers don't bother you, feel free to click the link below to my LJ, as there is much discussion and some comparison/contrast to Twilight, which in this case, I feel is appropriate. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome. :)REVIEW: Maggie Stiefvater's SHIVERHappy Reading!

Ever since she was a little girl, Grace has been visited by a wolf in the woods behind her house. This particular wolf seems to appear every winter and has the most amazing yellow eyes. After wolves attack one of her classmates, Grace's wolf appears to her one night... as a human. Sam. And Grace knows that she loves him. But she also knows that she's going to lose him. For as the temperature drops, Sam's days as a human are drawing to a close. And to be together, Grace and Sam have to be willing to risk everything. This is a beautifully written novel with a strong romance and non-annoying characters. I'd hand it to Twilight fans in an instant. Highly recommended for fans of paranormal romance.

This is a beautifully presented book and when I read the blurb I was eager to get my hands on it, but what a disappointment! "Shiver" had the potential to be a great book but fails to deliver. The plot is almost non-existent and the characters are one dimensional. if I stopped in the middle of a chapter I would have to go back to the start of the chapter, when I picked up the book again, to find out who was speaking, as the voices of the two main characters were indistinguishable. Extremely disappointing!!

It was an ok book but unfortunately it reminded me more of the Twilight series than anything else. Though the new way in looking at hoe the werewolf are and how they fit into our modern world really was interesting. The struggle these two had to go through and the betrayal that they had faced. But even if it sort of showed a Twilight quality it was still better than it all the same.

Somewhat sappy YA romance with awkward musical interlude. I liked the werewolf premise though other parts of the story seemed less believable. I liked the dual narration and plot holes may have occurred because I was half asleep (audiobooks are for bedtime!) I did like it enough to check out the next one sooner or later...

Better than I expected it to be, but I shouldn't be surprised, considering it's coming from Steifvater's brain. Not as poetic as The Raven Cycle, nor as magical and romantic, but there is so much good in this book. The characters are lovable and flawed, so different yet so human. I love the wolf-ness of it, and how wolves haunt the text in many different ways. I love the subtle use of the word "shiver" throughout, and how effortless the prose feels. All in all, a very good read, and one of my favourite werewolf stories. I can't wait to see how this story turns out.

A nice, poetic story about a young girl, bitten by wolves many years ago, who falls in love with a wolf/boy. Even though bitten, she does not shapeshift into a werewolf and love needs to find out soon how she did it before he turns into a wolf forever. This story is well written and very imaginative. A great read!

I adore Maggie Stiefvater's ability to create a blossoming romance between two realistic characters. I've seen less deft authors fixate on a romantic interest without letting the readers discover on our own why we ought to love the love interest as much as the main character does, but Ms. Stiefvater expertly avoids even a hint of that. Sam and Grace are very different in several obvious ways--on the surface, for example, Grace is a numbers person and Sam is a poetry lover--but they still mesh beautifully, and it's clear that they belong together.

The novel switches back and forth between the two main characters' points of view, and there is a distinct shift in voice when the narrator changes. Both characters are fully developed and exist as their own person. I felt as if I was getting to know two separate people better than they were getting to know each other. That, in particular, is what makes their romance so enticing. Everything that makes them too shy to make a move or otherwise holds them back--we, as readers, get to understand every bit of that, to the point where when Grace is narrating, we can almost see Sam thinking, and vice versa.

This is an amazing story, full of poetry that sings as magnificently as the characters' experience of first love.

Very good YA read. I would have loved this in my younger days, and quite enjoyed reading it now. I'm going to have to track down some more of this author's work :)

It's been a while since I read this book however I remember it being a decent novel. At points I couldn't put it down while at others I wanted to skip ahead because I found it a little too dramatic, a little too over the top. I would still recommend it to someone however I don't think I'd be interested in rereading it myself.

i liked it, but i wasn't compelled to instantly go out and buy the next one (even though all 3 books in the series were literally at my finger tips) I will probably read the rest at a later date and reevaluate my stance on the series as a whole

I enjoyed this one. Some passages were very difficult to read-- there were some graphic descriptions of violence against animals. However, those descriptions were important to the story.

The beginning of Shiver pulled me into the story quick, and I wanted to see what would happen. Grace and Sam were memorable characters, with unique baggage in their past that made them very likable and interesting. Then the story developed into a teenage love story. I was disappointed, not wanting it to be another typical YA romance book, but I stayed with it.

Glad I did - the story turned around and became a more complicated weave of personalities and relationships, riddled with regret and forgiveness. The end was nicely done. Overall a decent YA novel about first love, relationships with parents, and friendship bonds.

I loved this book! Yes I say it a lot but if it's true it's true. The characters are compelling. The story of Grace and Sam has a poetic flow that sweeps you from page to page. I wanted to bundle Sam up and take him home with me. There are so many parts throughout the whole trilogy that are heart wrenching. With so many werewolf stories out there, it is difficult to stand out from the pack. Yes pun intended. Shiver manages to do so from the first few pages. The seasons, the love story, the loss... You have GOT to read this.I've read the whole series several times now and something new always comes to light. Another piece falls into place or another question forms. The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy has become one of my favorites. It you enjoyed these books you might want to check out The Dire Wolves Chronicles by Alyssa Rose Ivy. It has a similar tone and texture.

I have to say I really enjoyed it. I was pulling for Sam & Grace throughout the whole book. It was a sweet love story, the kind of thing girls fantasize about. I'm hoping the next book continues with Sam & Grace and I'm worried that it'll be someone else's story.

I picked this title up after reading reviews calling it the werewolf version of Twilight. Since the movies have ruined Edward's original book character for me, I thought I'd give this book a try.

I had high hopes of a comparable story with a likable cast, but it just never happened. Sam & Grace lacked depth and never pulled me into the relationship as Bella and Edward did. And the parents? I wish they would have just been left out, rather than portrayed as so naive and self-centered (the kitchen scene completely irked me). The remaining characters proved of little value.

I'm a little curious to see how the entire storyline will play out, but this series is just a filler for me, nothing more.

5 Stars if you are a 15 year old girl, I should add. I read this book to see if it was okay for Delaney (9 years old) to read it, since she is a wolf nut, but it's not. It has lovely, lovely writing, achingly romantic (whereas Twilight just made me shudder with it's obsession and dark love), and evocative of two teens who don't fit in, but find the best of themselves through each other, but there is one scene of fade to black sex, and my 9 year old would just say less lip-lock and more wolf -- the romance, and it is mostly romance, would just make her get a little nauseous. Yes, there are werewolves, but they aren't dark and magically gross, just either naturally wolf or sadly human facing the fact that they will become wolves again, but no monsters. 2.5 stars if you are a 43 year old woman wishing you were reading adult literature, and so much more beautiful than Twilight could ever wish to be.

I just have to outright say it. Any book that introduces teens to Rainer Maria Rilke (who happens to be one of my favorite poets), is okay by me, so no matter what, I like this book. My eldest grandgirl (who told me about the book, and is the reason I picked it up to read) took our copy of Rilke off the shelf and read it her first evening here, mostly, I suspect, because it was the poetry Sam read to Grace in the book. That's pretty darn cool. The story itself is a romance. Wolf meets girl, wolf loses girl, boy gets girl, girl loses wolf -- or something along those lines. Grace has a thing for the wolves in the Minnesota woods behind her home, especially for the golden eyed one who saved her life when she was a child and was attacked by other wolves in the pack. So, when the golden-eyed wolf turns out to be a shape-shifter, who loves her back, you get the romantic set-up. There's some community drama thrown in, as well as pack dominance, and some incredibly irresponsible parents, who should have Child Protection set on them. But all in all, despite plot flaws, I liked the book. I know there are two other books in the series, which I pretty much (according to grandgirl) guessed the plot, so I may not read them, as I've got a huge TBR pile. But, if I stumble upon either one via BookCrossing or my local library, I'll give it a whirl.

Plot: Grace has been fascinated with the wolves that live in the forest outside her house ever since she was attacked as a child. Her obsession centers on the particular wolf that saved her life in the attack. When a local teen is mauled to death by the wolves, Grace learns that there are many secrets hidden in her small Minnesota town.My reaction: A fairly easy read and one that would be popular with Twilight fans. Ultimately forgettable, I still found it more intelligent and gripping than many of the supernatural romance books that I have read for YA audiences. Recommended Age Level: 13+Series Information: Shiver is the first in the Shiver Trilogy. The next two books are Linger and Forever.

4Q, 4P. At first I was like, "oh boy, it's by Maggie Stiefvater, it's going to be great!" And then I was like, "oh, wow, this is a whole freakin' lot like Twilight, it's going to be lame." But then I was like "wait, no, it's cool." This book honestly reads like someone read Twilight and then said "maaaaaan, I can do better than THAT", and then did. It has a similar setup -- girl and supernatural boy fall into relationship based on him having yellow eyes and her smelling good -- but Grace and Sam's passionate and sweet relationship is far better than anything you'll get from the Bland-y and Stalker-y Show. The book is aptly named, as temperature takes central stage in a battle between sensual warmth and bone-chilling icy--this book conjures up the feeling of being out in the painful mid-continental winter and then stomping inside and sliding under nice hot sheets. Great for anyone who liked Twilight as well as anyone who expected to like Twilight and then actually read it!

I enjoyed this new series from Maggie Stiefvater. It was so very different from the faerie books. Again we have a female protagonist, but this time the supernatural creatures are werewolves. I like the twist that they only change in winter. I thought that was interesting and new. Overall, the story keeps you going, the plot is well thought and the characters, though I never really begin to really like them, are well rounded. It will make for a great movie! I am looking forward to book two coming out to see what happens with Sam.

This is a great book because it is written like the main character is journaling. Each poem connects to the next and it is almost like you are following the main characters life. The book is engaging and pushes students to use their active reading skills to interpret the story.
